Comparing Cars
With all of the talk lately about fuel efficient cars, its important to see if car companies live up to their hype. Here are five fuel efficient cars. Each car was test driven 5 times on full tanks of gas to see how many miles per gallon the car drove. The predicted mileage is based on the means of each data. The results are as follows: Hyundai Elantra Predicted 33 31.7 30.4 36.7 35.0 31.2 Honda Civic Predicted 30 29.1 32.0 31.2 27.9 29.8 Mazda 3 Predicted 29 29.0 29.2 29.7 28.7 28.4 Ford Focus Predicted 33 33.5 32.0 34.5 32.7 32.3 Toyota Corolla Predicted 30 30.8 28.9 30.4 28.7 31.2

3.) What can Standard Deviation tell us about our data sets?
4.) Define Standard Deviation. (Combine your answers from 2 and 3 to create a full definition)
5.) Enter Values in Summary Table: Mean Hyundai Elantra Honda Civic Mazda 3 Ford Focus Toyota Corolla Now that you have the standard deviation of each car, answer the following questions: 6.) Would you use the mean and/or the standard deviation if you were trying to determine if the car companies were close to their predicted miles per gallon based on the data? Explain your reasoning Stnd. Dev.
7.) Which car company was the most reliable prediction of miles per gallon? How did you know?
8.) Rank the cars from most fuel efficient to least fuel efficient. Give evidence for your rankings.
