Expectations and Conduct Be in your seat and ready to start at the beginning of every rehearsal. Have ALL materials with you every day. Students are expected to keep the band room clean, and pick up any trash around the space. Instruments and music should be stored away neatly in their proper place. Any personal items left behind can be thrown out or put in lost and found. Lost and found items to go Goodwill at the end of the semester. Treat all equipment with respect- your own instrument, peers instruments, and the schools instruments. Students will be held responsible for damage to school property. There is also to be no gum, food, or drink open in the band room at any time. Follow directions the first time they are given. Students are not to enter the band office without permission of a director. No displays of affection during rehearsal, or performances. No foul or crude language in the band room, practice field, or at any venue where you are representing the band, and the school. Cursing while in uniform will result in group calisthenics at the following rehearsal. Talking in rehearsal while a director is teaching or addressing the group will not be tolerated. Conduct Consequences

Removal from class and/or Referral to Office **Continual and/or severe issues with student conduct will result in a student/parent conference to decide the students future within the band program.** III. Attendance Policy 1.) Daily attendance is essential to the success of the group. 2.) While band is an optional activity, a commitment to band is a commitment to attendance. 3.) In addition to class time, there will be required attendance for some after school rehearsals and events. 4.) He following qualify as EXCUSED absences from band functions: -Illness that causes student to miss school (with a parent note, or a doctors note for extended illness.) -Death in the family or other major family emergency (with documentation.) -Wedding or similar ceremony involving immediate family member (notify director in advance.) 5.) Excused absence notes must be presented to the band directors as soon as the parent and student are aware of the conflict, and should turn it in at least one month prior to performance.

6.) Special considerations will be taken with emergencies. There will be handles on a case by case basis. 7.) Students will be given a list of all required dates for the year at the beginning of the year. Conflicts with employment, driving classes or non-school events will not be considered excused absence. 8.) Acceptability of excused absences are at band directors discretion. Decisions FINAL. IV. Required Materials 1.) Instrument- in good playing condition. Instruments will sometimes develop problems with continual use, and should be taken to the music shop as needed. Proper maintenance on instrument will cut down on repairs needed. Repairs should also be completed in a timely manner. 2.) Students are required to have their own accessories for their instrument. In the event these items are lost, or run out, they need to be replaced in a timely manner. 3.) Woodwinds- instrument swab, cork grease, reeds, mouthpiece, ligature, strap for saxes. 4.) Brass- mouthpiece, valve oil for all valves, additional rotor oil for rotor valves, slide grease, straight mute, other mutes many be required as needed. 5.) Percussion- SD-1 snare sticks, T-1 timpani mallets, yarn marimba mallets (medium), stick bag. 6.) ALL STUDENTS MUST HAVE THEIR MUSIC FOLDER AND ALL MUSIC! V. Grading Policy 1.) Daily Rehearsal- Preparation and Conduct (40%) -Prepared each day. -Rehearse to best of ability. -Students with multiple absences will need to make up participation points through additional assignments at directors digression. 2.) Performance Attendance (40%) -As a curricular subject, band requires some after school activities. -Advanced notice will be given for all of these required rehearsals and performances. -Unexcused absence from these functions will result in a loss from the Performance Attendance of the grade. -Any unexcused absence from a performance will result in the student losing all points from this section of the students grade. 3.) Assignments/Playing Tests/Auditions (20%) -Written work, practice journals, and/or individual performance evaluations will contribute to this section of the students grade.

-Students will also complete an audition for the band directors to determine which ensemble they will perform with during the concert band season. -All students must complete this audition to participate in band. VI. Dress Code (Concert) 1.) The school dress code applies to all band related functions, and should be followed at all times. 2.) Gentlemen will wear black dress shoes, black socks, black dress pants, and a long sleeved black dress shirt. No ties unless otherwise stated. No pattern or design should be on the dress apparel. 3.) Ladies will wear black slacks or a black skirt (calf length or longer), black dress shoes (close toed), and a black long sleeve blouse, black panty hose, or black socks (no bare legs). Black accessories only, and no designs on the clothing. VII. Dress Code (Marching Performance) 1.) Uniform parts should all be neat, well cared for, and ironed. They should be free of lint or pet hair. All uniform parts should be present! 2.) Pants should be at the proper height from the ground, as fitted by the uniform committee. 3.) No jewelry or make up is permitted in uniform. Period. 4.) Clothing under the uniform must be the approved RRHS band t-shirt and black shorts, and black knee high socks. (Layers are permitted during cold weather, so long as the top layer is black.) 5.) Shoes and spats should be wiped off and shined for each performance. 6.) Long hair must be pulled back so that it might go under the hat during performances. Males: Facial hair should be groomed, and neat. 7.) Gloves should be washed for each performance. 8.) The entire band will go through an inspection before every performance. Any infractions will be on a 3 strike system, the 3rd strike resulting in a lowered participation grade. VIII. Uniforms Summer Uniform: Band Polo, Khaki Shorts, Tennis Shoes. Pep Band Uniform: Blue Jeans (no holes), RRHS Black Band T-Shirt, Black Band Hoodie, Tennis Shoes. Full Uniform: Beret, Uniform Jacket with required clothes underneath, Uniform Pants, Black Marching Band Shoes, Black Knee High Socks, White Gloves.

Trips 1.) For off school grounds trips, all band members must take the bus to and from all events, unless permission is requested from the band directors and an administrator. 2.) Only band members and approved chaperone personnel are allowed to ride the bus. 3.) Chaperones and bus drivers have the same authority, and should be given the same respect as school personnel. 4.) All Rocky River school rules apply, even off of school grounds, including dress code.

XI. Band Staff The band staff is essential to the daily function of the band, and for the band to run smoothly. These student leaders must apply for all of these positions, and go though a short interview in the spring. The positions with an * next to them require a practical evaluation audition, held in the spring. To be considered for Field Commander, students must sign a form stating they will attend a Field Commander summer camp if selected. All these positions are decided on by the band directors. Band Council Members of the band council are very key in the image of the band, and should display good leadership through action at all times. Students wishing to run for these positions must submit an application of interest in the spring. There is one representative for each grade level, and the Field Commander is appointed to the council automatically by the band director. All other positions are elected via the democratic process, and voted on by the band.
