Political Cartoons That Speak of Social Justice Friday, January 18, 2013 Ms.

Cogdill Context: This is an impromptu lesson due to a weather delay for the school day. The shortened day is not long enough for a paideia discussion, so it has been moved. This lesson will serve to engage the students critical thinking skills in a different way than the short story did. For this lesson, students must draw from their recent knowledge and understanding of social justice to interpret what is given to them in a political cartoon. Lesson Objectives: Students will be able to interpret how political cartoons portray social justice. Common Core Standards Met: RI8.3 Analyze how a text makes connections among and distinctions between individuals, ideas, or events Approximate Time: 25 minutes Lesson Procedure: Silent Reading (10 minutes) Bridge (1 minute) 1. Inform the students that their paideia has been moved to Wednesday due to the delay -Have students take out a sheet of paper and note the location it should be in their of contents Class Work (15 minutes) 2. Put the slideshow of cartoons and questions on the SmartBoard. -Read the questions out loud to the class and give them approximately 3 minutes to answer the questions on their paper -The questions vary for each cartoon, but the questions essentially guide the students on how to interpret the cartoon (i.e. what does the text say, what do you notice about the drawing, etc) -Once the students have answered on their own, have volunteers answer the questions aloud and discuss the cartoons in full with the class -Ensure that the class has a working understanding of the cartoon and continue to the next cartoon Closure (dismissal bell) 3. Tell the students to be prepared for paideia when they return from the long weekend Evaluation Methods: Students will be evaluated based on the completion of the class work during a notebook check.

Modifications: The cartoons will be discussed at the length necessary for the class to have a working understanding of any particular cartoon. Materials: Cartoon Presentation
