In this Graphing Project, worth 100 points, you will demonstrate your understanding of systems and how they relate to solving real life problems. To receive full credit, you must be present on presentation day and participate in the evaluation process. It counts as a test grade. No late projects will be accepted.
Big idea: Real life problems can be modeled by algebraic equations. The graph of a system of equations provides information to aid in decision making for business, finance, manufacturing, agriculture, environmental concerns, medicine, economics, personal financial planning, and more.
You will: I. Select a real life topic (see reverse side) Think of a real-life story problem that applies to your life. Not everything in life is a linear equation. Choose a topic that IS. Get approval for your idea before proceeding. Unapproved topics may not be accepted. Gather real life information to support your equations. II. Create a poster board presentation Write the equations related to your story problem. Define your variables. Solve your system by graphing the equations or inequalities on a large poster board, complete with a legend (or key) identifying the lines and symbols on your poster board. Solve your system by two other methods: substitution and elimination III. Type a 1-2 page interpretive report Introduction: Explain the purpose of your study (what you are trying to discover). Body: Explain how your data was collected. Compare and contrast equations. Explain what any x or y intercepts mean. Interpret meaning of the intersection and area before and after it. Explain any limitations of your data or graph to be considered when basing decisions on it. It is not necessary to explain step-by-step algebraic solutions. That should be obvious on your poster. Conclusion: Include insightful interpretation of your results - where you see yourself on the graph, what decisions can be made based on the information your graphed system gives. IV. On the due date you will Turn in: Poster board, typed report, supporting documentation, this rubric Present: verbally share something of interest learned or experienced while creating your project Evaluate: 5 of your peers projects and provide them with meaningful feedback
How can your equations be represented as y = mx + b? What does your b represent? _____________________________________________________ What does your m represent? _____________________________________________________

You must find documentation (data), that can be attached to support your equations. Where, or how, will you look for the necessary documentation? _____________________________________________________________________________________ What do you hope to learn from the solution of your system? __________________________________
