Melody Based on a Character


Plan: Behavioral objective: Students are able to create a short melody (12-bars) that depicts the character of his/her choice at success rate of 85% Cognitive objective: Students are able to express their imagination into music creatively. Experiential objective: Student uses piano and Finale to create their music. Critical objective: Students understand the process of composition by using musical elements (intervals, rhythms, dynamics, and ext.) to depict a certain image. Partner: Before each student picks their character, play excerpts of Saint-Saens The Carnival of Animals and discuss how each animal are depicted in the piece. Discuss the how feelings, themes, or characters can be expressed through music. Ask students to share songs they know that reflect the meaning of the piece.

Present:

Focusing Question: How would my character sound like? And which rhythms, intervals, and dynamics should I use to turn this character into music?

Assessment: Formative: o Using Finale, each student creates a hard copy of his/her melody

Play excerpts of pieces that depict certain characters or feelings. Students discuss what they heard and which character it sounded like and what made them sounded like the character. Each student chooses his/her character and work individually. The instructor walks around the classroom to answer questions and help with technology Students create a hardcopy of their composition Students get together and each student present his/her composition by sharing the musical elements (linear intervals, rhythms, dynamics, and ext.) he/she used to depict his/her image. And then, he/she performs the piece on piano. Other Students reflect on the piece by sharing what they enjoyed. They also share what they would have done differently to depict the character.

Summative: o By the end of the class, students presents their composition to class and performs on piano

Personalize: Students can freely use their imagination and creativity and depict their characters.
