Understandings
Overarching Understanding
Students will understand how to solve a system of equations in a variety of manners. When students are given a system of equations they will possess the knowledge and ability to deduce what method best suits that system for finding its solutions. Students will understand that when graphing a system of equations, to find their solution they will find the intersection point of the two lines and list that point as their solution Students will develop their ability to look at a mathematical problem and chose a proper method to find a solution. This can be applied to many other areas of mathematics.

Essential Questions
Overarching
Which method of solving is the best for this system of equations? o How do you know? What in this problem clues you to do that? What do we look for to solve a system by substitution/elimination? When solving a system by graphing, what do you look for once you have graphed both equations? What are you doing when looking at a problem to determine the method to find the solution? o Can you apply this to other areas of mathematics or real life situations where a method for solving is not always evident? Is the question asking for a solution or are they giving you a solution to verify? Is more than one variable required for a correct solution?

Topical
Is this elimination? Is this substitution? Do we have to multiply to eliminate? What do you need to show when I graph the linear equations? Are you done once you find a solution for one of the variables?

Related Misconceptions Students may still have trouble with graphing o Figuring out which is the y-intercept o Determining the slope o Getting y alone when it is not Students may struggle with determining which method of solving to use Students forget to solve for the other variable after they find the first one Students may struggle when solving for slope given points, or finding slope intercept form from point slope form

Knowledge
Students will know

Objectives Skills
Students will be able to Graph linear equations Determine a proper method of solving and state why they chose that method Check to determine if an ordered pair is a solution to the system Use proper solving methods (substitution/elimination) to find solutions to a system of equations

Students will know how to graph linear equations and find a solution to a system by finding the intersection point of the two lines. Students will know how to use the substitution method to solve a system of equations. Students will know what to look for when given a system of equations when trying to decide what method of solving is best for the system. Students will know to solve for both variables in the equations to find the solution Students will know to plug solutions given into an equation to determine if the solution is actually true or false

Assessment Evidence (Stage 2) Performance Task Description

Goal Students who attain the ability to graph linear functions, find their solutions from a point of intersection, determine a method of solving for a system of equations, properly execute solving a system of equations using substitution and elimination, and find both variables (an ordered pair) in their solution will perform well on their assessment and quizzes throughout the unit. These students will then be able to use their deductive reasoning skills that they have developed in more mathematics and also in any problem that they could approach. The assessment for chapter 6 will be split into 2 sections. Linear inequalities in part I and inequalities in part II. Both parts build off of student ability to graph and recognize linear relationships such as slope and y-intercept. My mentor teacher and I will be grading the assessments given to the students. Part I of the assessment will be completed by students at the end of instruction for Part I of Chapter 6 Part of the performance will be multiple choice and part will be short answer where students are required to show all work. Students are graded on performance and their overall mastery of each standards presented in the assessment. Students will also be assessed during flipped classroom sections involving diagnostic quizzes and section quizzes.

Other Evidence Learning Plan (Stage 3)

Day in Unit Lesson Topic Lesson Learning Objective
Students will learn that a solution to two lines on a graph can is their point of intersection

Description of how lesson contributes to unit-level objectives

Students will see how on a map of roads the intersection of 2 roads is where the 2 roads are the same, they are equal, and this intersection can be represented by an ordered pair when the map is overlaid on an axis. Students will see how on a map of roads the intersection of 2 roads is where the 2 roads are the same, they are equal, and this intersection can be represented by an ordered pair when the map is overlaid on an axis. Students will represent the roads as equations and that when these 2 equations are equal, they represent a point, or the intersection of the roads on the graph.
