Kline Lesson Plan Rationale: I am teaching this lesson to make sure that the children are able to count different objects and record information. The core content standard that goes with this lesson is CCSS.Math.Content.K.CC.B.4a. When counting objects, students say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object. Objective: The children will be able to identify how many objects are in two of the bags, and record their results with 80% accuracy. Lesson Progression: This lesson is targeted towards a kindergarten class. I will have students come to their square on the carpet. Once all the children are at their seats, I will explain to the students that we will be working on counting today. Next, I will explain to the students the activity we will be doing at our desks when I am done explaining. I will show the students that there are ten bags with one of the following letters on them: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, and J, and each bag contains different objects in different quantities. I will have the students select one bag at a time from the table, NO PEEKING. Students will take that bag to their table and will count the total objects in the bag. Next, each student will record the total number of items that are in the bag. Once each child completes his or her bag, they are to put the contents of the bag back in it for another friend to have a turn with that bag. Each child will go to the table where the bags are located and switch the bag that he or she has for a differently lettered bag following the same procedure as before. Once finished, I will call the students back to the carpet to review what they found out about the bags. At the carpet for the review, I will ask the students how many of each object was in each bag, and I will write it on the board. Then, I will show the students the flip chart which says: Ways to Count: When you count, you say one number for each object. You need to keep track of what you are counting. The last number you say is the total. The total tells you how many are in the group. Look at how some children count. 1) Jack puts each button in a cup as he counts. 2) Abby moves each button as she counts it.

3) Kiyo put the buttons in a row to count them. As I read the flip chart to the children, I will ask them how they counted their objects and if that method was on our flip chart. As a class, we will use any of those methods to count the remaining bags that have not been counted by the students. Other considerations: Materials that the students need: The recording work sheet (attached to lesson plan) Bag labeled, A- with 9 counting bears in the bag Bag labeled, B- with 10 quarters in the bag Bag labeled, C- with 5 pennies in the bag Bag labeled, D- with 12 buttons in the bag Bag labeled, E- with 11 candy corn erasers in the bag Bag labeled, F- with 7 two-colored counters in the bag Bag labeled, G- with 6 squares in the bag Bag labeled, H- with 12 big counter squares in the bag Bag labeled, I- with 5 pencils in the bag Bag labeled, J- with 8 small counting blocks in the bag Pencil to write with

I took this lesson from the math lesson book. I adjusted the bags to have different materials inside them to keep the children interested in the lesson. Differentiation: I will adapt to the students difficulty levels by giving them bags with the range of numbers that they can count to. Based on counting level, I could challenge them with a bag that is a little bit more difficult for them to assess. If students need assistance, I will go to their desk and help them. If I were to do this lesson with a class that had difficulty with counting, I may only put items in the bag ranging from 1-5 rather than 5-12. Assessment: After the students complete their worksheet, we will go over how many objects are in each bag. By doing this, I will know how accurately each student counted the objects they were given. If the child did not count the item(s) correctly, we would count the items as a class so that the child would understand where they went wrong.
