Carolina Hernandez Professor Purvin Education Field Experience EDUC 23002 Spring 2013 Lesson Plan 2 Grade Level: High School Subject: Algebra Topic: Interpret the structure of expressions

Objective: Students will be able to determine the parts of an expression and understand the different parts of expressions; such as factors and coefficients. Standards: CCSS.Math.Content.HSA-SSE.A.1 Interpret expressions that represent a quantity in terms of its context. CCSS.Math.Content.HSA-SSE.A.1a Interpret parts of an expression, such as terms, factors, and coefficients. Materials: Textbooks, Notebooks, Pencils, Calculator, Worksheets, PowerPoint Slides, Markers (dry erase board) Prerequisite Knowledge and Skills: Students would need to feel comfortable multiplying and dividing. They would need to know how to solve simple equations in order to be able to move on and understand the components of expressions. Anticipatory Set: The students will come in to class and start off with a question on the PowerPoint. Example: Has anyone ever seen this? (x-2)(x+2) If you have, please write down the components of the expression. Also explain the difference between and expression and an equation. Input and Modeling: As a whole I would want the class to understand the difference between and expression and an equations. I want the students to clearly understand what the difference between them is. In the next slides I will breakdown the components that are in the expression

and other models of expressions. For example; variables, exponents, multiplication, division, parenthesis, etc. Student Practice, Checking, for Understanding and Evaluation: 1. The PowerPoint would have examples without explanations; I would ask the students a series of questions for each problem. 2. If there were any problems that I felt needed some more explanations I would stop and go over them. 3. The last problem that would be on the slide the students would have to answer the questions being the components and how to expand the expression. They would have to hand that in correctly in order to receive the homework assignment. Closure: Show the students the last problem on the slide. Explain that this problem has everything that was covered in the lesson and that in order to be able to receive the homework they would have to complete the problem correctly and then I would hand them their homework. Modifications: For students with special needs I would provide them with a handout of the PowerPoint slides. Also I would try to provide extra help during class and after class so that the students would be able to understand the lesson. As a way to have the parents involved I would email them the lesson as well so that they would be up to date with what was taught in the class. Therefor if they had any questions, they would know exactly what was taught.
