Mallori Kelley EDUC 6331 Dr. May Competency Checklist Competency 1- As a school, we already have a positive campus culture.

From the teachers to the front office and cafeteria, we do our best to remain positive. So from my point of view, I do know that our campus culture is inviting and I know that we collaborate with our parents and other stakeholders. One of my projects, McTeacher Night, dealt with this particular competency as far as working with students, parents, and stakeholders. The McTeachers Night was a success and really got the students, parents, and community involved in supporting the school. Some parents even stopped by just to donate money towards the school. This project allowed me to be able to work with the parents and community. Competency 2- Outside of my McTeachers night project, I did not do much with this competency. I do know that our school does our best to communicate with families and communities to promote success. For McTeachers Night, I was in charge of contacting McDonalds manager, setting up a time and date to have the event, creating the schedule and asking for volunteers from my colleagues, making sure we all were on time, staying throughout the entire event to make sure my volunteers showed up and that the night ran smoothly, and communicating with the manager at McDonalds to have a successful event. I was able to assist in making sure the contract was delivered and the manager of McDonalds agreed. The students really like to come and make us work. They get a joy out of putting us to work. Another project, Career Day, also falls under

this competency. With this project, I had to collaborate with one of the counselors and we spoke with and scheduled many volunteers around the community to come speak to the 8th graders about their futures. Competency 3- This is a competency that I think happens every day with the principal and APs. Every day they have to act with integrity and fairness, and also follow the rules/laws. Being that I dealt with many safety issues this semester, (Sports, different duties, etc.) I also had the opportunity of having to learn and follow the same suit as administration. I also attended many ARDs which helps enhance my knowledge about the SPED laws with every meeting. My project dealing with the Campus Safety Plan also increased my knowledge about the laws we have to adhere to for safety. For example, for a fire, we have to be out of the building within x amount of minutes, and are required to have a fire drill once a month. Competency 4- I did not facilitate any meetings this semester, besides the campus meetings between myself, my mentor, and my professor. Otherwise, I did not see much of this competency. Even shadowing my APs, I did not see them facilitate any meetings either, outside of attending PLC meetings. I did, however, have to have several conversations/meetings when it was time for me to begin my Action Research project. My research paper dealt with implementing research-based vocabulary strategies into my lessons to see if students performed better with the strategies or without. Competency 5- For competency five, once again I did not facilitate anything nor did my mentor. However, we did perform walk-throughs. In all cases, the teacher was actively helping and monitoring and majority of the students were on task and asking for help.

Competency 6- My mentor and I did not engage in much of competency six. Outside of me speaking with my principal to learn about the budget, I did not see any of the APs handling anything with the budget. I did work collaboratively with others in the district; however, it was not about budget. Being in graduate school is allowing me enhance my own knowledge and skills and continue learning. So this in itself falls under this competency. Competency 7- I did not engage much in competency 7 either. I did meet with one of the APs when to discuss the Campus Safety Plan. At that time, we delegate authority and assign staff members to certain positions for different drills. However, from attending different meetings, I could tell that my principal does delegate authority and accountability. We have many committees that are responsible for certain things that help the campus as a whole achieve. For example, the SDC committee helps set campus goals, analyze data, and deal with curriculum. Competency 8- Once again, outside of interviewing my principal about the budget, I did not experience anything else as far as budget goes. Competency 9- I can say that I had plenty of experiences with competency nine. Last semester I learned how to process referrals. I also sat in for a gang intervention with a student and an officer. After a few trainings on processing referrals, I was allowed to them on my own and assign whatever appropriate consequence. This semester, I looked the safety of the school as a whole. Doing the Campus Safety Plan allowed me the opportunity to look at the overall safety of the campus whether it is a loose animal on campus or an earthquake. I also worked many after school activities such as basketball games, and school dances. I worked all the duties throughout the day to ensure safety.

Looking at this reflection has helped me be able to look at all the time and energy spent into being in a leadership position. Shadowing the APs this semester; I still say that they deal with many disciplinary issues. That is not all they do. However, majority of it was with some form of discipline or making sure the environment was safe. The leaders on my campus do so much and they really do go above and beyond. They are patient in situations that I have to stand back and wonder if I could display the same patience. I have also learned that being an administrator is plenty of work and paperwork, yet it is the direction that I see myself going and enjoying.
