Find an image from a real magazine, which you think bears some similarity. Drop the two into Photoshop, as a split-screen. Export this split-screen image as a jpeg then drop onto your website and write about the similarities and differences in terms of the way you have constructed the image ?
My media product comprises of most of the conventions typically found in official magazine, one primary example being the title page, which Ive utilized with the intent of creating a design that is as professional as I can have. In This case, one of the primary and typical conventions is the masthead. Like other brands, I insured the masthead stands out as its the first means of identification by prospective customers. Masthead Font and colour Like most music magazines, I have insured that the masthead is obtrusive and stands out, in my efforts to try and promote uniqueness amongst other designs. The title itself has retained the characteristic of having the same colour as the chosen house style witness through out the various pages of my design. I have used bright colours such as red because it is the most easily noticeable and will instantly draw the eye of potential readers amongst other competing product that follow a different direction in their use of colour. This will increase the chances of potential reader picking up the magazine as it stands out the most. The choice of for is linear, large and red. The primary reason I have used this font because it is typical of local cultures or urban areas and can be attributed to the younger population whom is my target audience. The font style is almost universal as it is used in various magazines of different genres such as rock or hiphop. This also enable me to optimize the font because it most likely equally appeals to all the member of the targeted audience, as my media products features all common genres and aims to attract a wider audience. Dominant Image-direct address Another major convention utilized in media products is the use of a dominant image on prominent pages of the product. My magazine has also utilized the dominant image, in this case with the purpose of alerting the audience and fans that the product will be featuring the depicted artist and encourages them to consider purchasing the products and as well as reading on. The dominant image also features direct address which is a feature commonly used in media magazine and sort of acts as a platform to promote a relationship between the reader and the products by subliminally making the audience aware that the artists, who in this case are promoting the products are aware of the fans and its mutual knowledge. In this particular part of the product I have developed
conventions of real media products by the use of a dominant images featuring direct address and on the front page. My magazine features a bright theme so comprises of bright colours with red being the most predominantly used colour. For this reason, the images also retain the same quality, hence the use of lighting and enhancement to make the image appear vibrant, similar to real media products with the same qualities. The design is aimed at mixed gender audience within the range of 16+. In this case, I decided to make a design that promotes itself to a younger audience by using a young artist who is presumably within the age range of the younger audience of the magazine. This also serves as a platform over which the design can attract younger viewer when they are able to see artists of a similar age they can relate to, showed on the key pages f the magazine such as the front page in this case.
Front page
Typically, front pages of music magazine will mainly comprise of text styles with purpose of making the particular page appear attractive and distinct from similar designs of the same genre. For this reason, I have decided to make my front page predominantly consist of bold text with distinct colours, with the intent of creating some clear contrast from the background, while retaining the quality of working well together. Design has a urban style to it hence the text appearance is mostly bold and in areas of reader interest in capital in order to attract more people. Moreover, the text also helps promote an urban theme to the magazine, which mostly appeals to the teenage audience, a considerable proportion of the market and post adolescent individuals as the text is neither child like nor tedious. In areas such as the masthead I decided to use a font template that allows me to input the required text, which is then edited with the desired effects of the template. In this case its fairly linear, and has conspicuous blemishes and shadows mirroring the effect of tear and wear, which is representative of some aspects of the urban theme. Another inherent convention of real media products is the use of text to promote a certain theme. In my design, the subsequent texts are mostly informative and alert the audience of the artists and various content, which will be featured in the magazine. I have used standard text, Black oak Std. To form this part of the text, which also features a linear style mirroring the masthead and also promoting the urban theme style of the magazine. For instance, I used standard text with a
mixture of colours between texts to let the audience know about Azalea banks new album.
Contents page
My contents page has some resemblance to that of Qs magazine contents page. Both magazines have employed most of the typical conventions found in a music magazine, regarding the use of images. The mist prominent feature of both pages that has the most resemblance is the location of dominant images. Like Qs, my contents page dominant image has been placed on the right side of the page and depicts an artist in a pose typically found in female artists within the pop music genre. As conventional, both images feature direct address, which is a method of address involving the model maintaining a pose that retains the quality of maintaining eye contact with the reader. Similarly, both images show a striking pose which is further emphasized by the colour, with the intention of sparking interest in the reader that will draw them to the images and possible further information or content associated with the particular artist depicted. Another similarity is the way in which both pages utilize the method of placing further subsidiary images on the bottom left of the pages, both of which show different artists featured in the magazine that will appeal readers of different preferences in music genre. As opposed to the similarities there are also differences in both media products help promote a sense of uniqueness and make the magazines contents pages appear distinct rather than a duplicate of one another. The theme of my magazine is mostly a positive, energetic atmosphere with colour hence the use of bright colours throughout my magazine and the contents page in particular. Contrary to Qs magazine contents page, my contents pages dominant image features a model who is wearing a bright red dress, with the intent of drawing the attention of the reader, as opposed to Qs model who takes a slightly different approach and utilizes dark colours which is reflective of the music genre the artist depicted engages in. On my page, features like legs are cropped in order to
stick to certain style and maintain content of relevance, which is different to Qs because their dominant image is a long shot which features the whole body of the model as opposed to the mid shot utilized on my page. Qs subsidiary image is has a metaphorical meaning to it whose interpretation is subjective to the reader of the magazine. The subsidiary image features an artist in a pose, which is further promoted by other subtle details such as contrast or exposure and may be typically attributed to some form of spirituality. Contrary to this, my subsidiary image has one sole purpose and is simply promoting a electronica music artist.
The contents on my pages follow a predictable linear arrangement with an order to them. My front page has the main masthead, which is situated, on the top left of the page. This is typical of real media products as its the location that readers are instantly drawn to when interest is parked. This is because it conventional for titles to be placed along the top somewhere; hence the tendency to look there. The main text is structures in consecutive rows, and appears obtrusively as required. This is typical of real media products because the front page is one of the key pages in the entire magazines hence designers will try and utilize the space to its full use by placing information of interest, such as the artist featured in the magazine on the front page. Conventionally the dominant image is small in this case and has been placed on the right side of the page, with text overlapping the image in some areas. This is typical of real media products as they seek to add depictions of the artists potentially featured in the issue. The bar code is situated on the bottom right stating the date and price as typical, with minor use of subsidiary images.
I have retained a similar linear structure on the double page spread. The masthead in this case is stated as with large, bold font after it stating Leaps and boundsa metaphor to describe his humbe beginnings to finding success on a global level. I have also utilized a dominant image of an artist with clothing mirroring the house style maintained on the pages. Further subsidiary images are used, one being an artist and the editorial, which are, incorporated in real media products. The double page spread is an exception because I have not used the overlapping feature that is typically used in media products. I have maintained a boundary with each page of the DPS comprising of completely different subjects. However, this is subject to change in future. Moreover, I have arranged my text into three different columns in order to make easier for readers to know where they are and what to expect next, or skip if they want to without losing their track. The first half of my double page spread has a resemblance t the Q magazine double page spread. The most feature in common is how both media products depict artists doing what they do, in this case performing to an audience. The only difference between my brand and Qs is that the image used on the pages shows both the performer and the audience as opposed t o Qs which may have its dominant and subsidiary images interpreted in different way due to the absence of an audience. Some may think the band is perhaps in practice which projects a different outlook and atmosphere contrary to epic magazine which tries to utilize the depiction of the audience as a means of demonstrating what the atmosphere is like when artists like ELUSIVE are performing. Furthermore my media magazine depicts a solo artists which differs to the page f Qs because they show a band, who do a different style of music compared to ELUSIVE, who maintains a urban theme and does hip-hop music. Another obvious difference is that my dominant image in colour contrary to Qs which utilizes the grey scale for the same image function.
Formality/tone/address My design utilizes an informal mode of address where the audience is approached in a familial, or friendly manner. For this reason, I mostly use pronouns to bridge the barrier in my attempt to establish a relationship between the audience and brand. I using pronouns such as referring to readers by term Such as you or I helps promote an atmosphere of mutual awareness where the reader feels as though the brand is aware of them and their wishes as well as conversely.
There is a mixture in tone. In some areas my design attempts to convey information in a loud conspicuous manner, hence the use of exclamation marks and words of that nature. The tone is mostly relevant to the subject, for instance the description of a dub step artist featured in my design comprise of an informative tone with the intent of being explosive and trying to mirror the music the artist theme of music of what is typically loud and described as explosive. For the design I have decided to minimize the amount of jargon used because the design is aimed at a teenage audience whos primary interest is the quality of the content of the magazine rather than paying attention to minor aspects of the design like the vocabulary used. Nonetheless I still try and mediate between using suitable vocabulary for appropriate areas such as the contents page where I try to explicitly inform the audience of the features in my magazine rather than maintain a similar style of vocabulary found in areas such as double page spread featuring a young, teenage artist.
Music genre- Ways of suggesting it Similar to real media products such as Q, my design does not adhere strictly to one music genre. It is comprehensive and covers a range of genres including pop music, hip and other forms deriving from contemporary music. This is an inherent convention of my design because its designed to appeal to various teenage and post adolescent audiences with differing preferences in music.
Carrying out analysis of the mis-en-in, particularly the clothing, posture and posing of the individuals are the ways in which I have tried to represent the different musical genres in this first issue. Below I will outline the individual pages and the music genre they are attribute to Front page-Acoustic For the front page I intention had always been to feature an instrument based artist- presumably a guitar, who writes and develops his own acoustic. My initial intention was to features some props such as the guitar but they were not available so I tried to use the subject himself to convey the idea of the type of artist in question. The subject wore casual clothing, with a statement road to no where which is reminiscent of a type of a song title. I also suggested a non intimidating, or not overly confident casual pose in which case the subject had his hands in his pockets and looking directly at the camera from a slight low angle. Pop-contents page At present popular music predominantly loud, energetic and attributed to partying. To represent the idea of pop music, I chose a photo in which the subject was wearing red clothing. This is accompanied by the subject posing in a model fashion which is prevalent in current feminine music videos which tend to come under popular music. The red colour also symbolizes the idea of danger which is often associated with adrenalin which can be attributed to fast paced, loud music like pop music. DPS- hiphop/mc The image I chose was of a individual dressed in black, solemn, doesnt offer much in means of identifying the individuals or somewhat knowing him to a personal level by making assumption of what he might be like, simpy judging at the picture. As a hiphop artist he also adopts the stage name ELU$IVE which refers to the idea of being hidden and hard to find. The mis-en-scene in terms of clothing suggests this idea that hes a rapper because the covering clothing leaves him hidden thus adhering to the idea behind the stage name. Hes posture is solemn which can suggest the case of hiphop being a highly competitive

most stands out and the tendency inevitably look at it is primeval. This works well for my media product because it helps promote a distinct look to my magazines together with the various characteristics observed in the product, and by doing so, it insures that the audience will most likely acknowledge the presence of my media products over other products which utilize a more dark, grey scale characteristics. The use of colours in my magazine helps promote an energetic atmosphere which s a commonly attribute to the teenage population. This can also be observed at events such as concerts advertised in the magazine that a full of colours that mirror the style utilized in my magazine. The textile also resembles the urban type style, which I found particularly popular with the younger population. For instance, the masthead on my contents page is the word itself with blemishes, giving it a worn out look which somewhat resembles some urban environments covered by arts such as various forms of graffiti. This can be observed in other areas of the magazine such as a subheadings like the one advertising the various benefits that come with opting for a subscription rather than purchasing magazines on a monthly basis which has its benefits, but may perhaps prove more expensive.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
When utilizing photoshop, minor details are equally important and the order in which you organize the layers to avoid encountering problems such as not being able to identify individual layers for alteration.
Looking back at your preliminary task (the school magazine task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?
One of the most important skills and knowledge Ive gained from doing the preliminary task are the various essential conventions required in a magazine and as well as using the predominantly used software, photoshop. I was initially oblivious t the conventions incorporated magazines prior to developing and completing the preliminary tasks. I had a generic view of what if thought was needed to make a magazine of a professional standard, without going into depths to features such as image interpretations, themes and applying styles to the product. During my preliminary task, I was largely focused on the aesthetical aspect of the design over the quality of being a good useful product with meaningful information. I have learned to take into account various aspects of my design, such as how the audience my view the individuals depicted and influence on the possibility of purchasing the product, the important of using the correct camera angle and taking good quality pictures and as well as the importance of mis-en-scene, particularly the use of props to create a desired outlook.
This is the image I have utilized on my front page. I decided to use a medium close up on the front page of the magazine. I felt it would it would add a sense of depth to the front page of the magazine by revealing more visual detail of the dominant image of. For the image, I wanted to capture the subject in its entirety, in particular the upper body. For this reason I decided to place the subject in the center of the page in order to capture the artist entirely, for the purpose of structuring the various features and conventions of the front page around the dominant image. The dominant image features direct address, which coincides with the image being a medium close u as its in my intent to make the subject appear protruding as possible. However, my front page doesnt feature the inherent background of the original image as further editing was done to remove the background and replace it with the style of the magazine. this is the dominant image of my contents page. It features the subject wearing red clothing which coincides with the house style utilised in the other pages. In this ase, the subject uses direct address as another means of addresing the audinece which is accompanied by the wide range use of pronouns to address the audience.the image is a cutout so does not feature the original backfground. On my contents page I decided to oplace the image on the left third of the page to support the presumed partterin in the way in which the audinece will read the page;. Innitially the image will be obtrusive but nonotheless. Adheres to the linear style of the magazine where most of the content is predominantly arranged in a straight arrangement.
This is the dominant image of my double page spread. The image is a medium close up that almost captures the subject in its entirety. In this case, direct address or other means of approaching the audience have not been utilised as the page strictly adheres to subjects demeanor and their portrayal in the hypothetical music industry. The double page spread is a fairly large part f the magzine pages so I thought a medium close ip would be most appropriate because it would best make use of the available space, while still meeting its purspose and as well as the acquisition of a substantial collection of body texrt accompaning the image. The subject was also
wearing clothing that best contrasted well against the background, as opposed to wearing clothing that has a strong resemablance of the back.
What kind of media institution might distribute your product and why?
I think the most appropriate media outlet to distribute my media product would be IPC. Having looked at IPCs brands and media products I found that IPC media does not have a media product that does not cater specifically for teenagers, hence why I feel its best appropriate to distribute my product because it will be something new and distinct on the market, distributed by a company that the audience are already familiar with, with respect to the products. Furthermore the company is already well established and has a considerably large market share making it a competitor with some of the already existing large media outlets such as IPC media. I think having the company distribute my product would be more effective and would insure, my media product receives swift and effective exposure. Most of IPCs media products are predominantly targeted at an adult audience who account for the majority of the population. I think my product, which is aimed at adolescents, will bring something new to the companys product portfolio that will also expand that audience they cater for as opposed to being virtually exclusive to adults. This will be also features targeted at a younger audience will insure that their other products get more exposure as a result of people liking the products and having the curiosity to perhaps look further and see whether that company offers other products that appeal to them and their personal preferences. This will benefit my product as well because it consequently increase the circulation numbers of my media products because already existing customers of the business will potentially be interested in what the new product will offer and as well as gaining more customers through other means such as advertisements through their magazines already owned by the company. IPC media is a multinational company which is active in different fields including print, radio and television. As a company, they would be suitable because being already established means they will have gained valuable experience which my product would greatly benefit from. They would be help in transferring my product buying carrying out major complex tasks that require a large work force a small, rising company would not be able to afford. They would carry out tasks such printing and distributing of the product to major bulk buyer such as supers market or shops. This would be advantageous for the product because it would be able to sell quicker when handled by a company which has already established mutual relationships with buyers. IPC media magazine have good circulation figures which means a great number of individuals will purchased their existing products. Going under an agreement with IPC will increase the chances of the product being successful over time because existing permanent customers will be curious to find out what nre product the company they have relied on has released. IPC media already publish
and distribute popular magazines such as NME due to their popularity and high consumers rate. IPC media do this because they make a significant amount of money from the sales of the magazines as they get a certain proportion from each unit sold.
