Reading/Literature

Text: There is not a text but the student will need copies of the following books. The Cricket in Times Square by George Sheldon (1st semester) My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George (1st semester) Caddie Woodlawn by Carol Ryrie Brink (2nd semester) The Wheel on the School by Meindert DeJong (2nd semester) Course Description: This is not a course that will teach reading! It is appropriate for 5th and 6th graders. We will read four books over the course of the year; 2 each semester. The students will read assigned chapters of the book at home before class. The focus will be on active reading, reflective thinking about events or characters in the books and vocabulary. There will be some writing assignments and other activities to enhance the book. Each week a portion of the book will be read aloud in class with the teacher reading and each of the students reading; usual length a paragraph to one page. Test over the vocabulary will be sent home with students and will be administered by the parents.
