A firewall is a device installed between the internal network of an organization and the rest of the internet . It prevents harmful message to a system. It is designed to forward some packets and filter others. A firewall may filter all incoming packets destined for a specific host or specific server such as HTTP.

Firewall examines traffic routed between two networks. Firewall filters both inbound and outbound traffic. It can manage public access to private network. Firewall can filter specific types of network traffic also known as protocol filtering.

Firewall cannot prevent individual users from dialling into or out of the network. Employee carelessness cannot be controlled by firewalls. The policy involves misuse of passwords. This is effected by phonemasters and crackers.

A person responsible for private network that is connected to a public network. Anyone who connects the computer to the internet via modem etc.. Who needs protection from malicious attack.

Two types firewalls are there1. PACKET FILTER FIREWALL 2. PROXY FIREWALL

It can forward or block packets based on the information in the network layer and transport layer headers.

It can forward or block a message based on the information available in the message itself.

Hence we can conclude that firewall is an integral part of any security program but it is not a security program in itself . Therefore , it is necessary for an organization to have a well planned and strictly implemented security program that includes but is not limited to firewall protection.
