Professor Dr. Muhammad Yar Khuhawar His Life, Works & Achievements
(Professor Emeritus and Visiting Professor, University of Sindh Jamshoro Pakistan) Pakistan)
Birth & Family Background details Dr. Muhammad Yar Khuhawar was born on February 5, 1948 in a small village called Dokhi in Deh Belati Taluka Shahdadkot District Larkana Sindh. His father Yar Muhammad Khan Khuhawar was an influential landholder of his time who owned fertile lands in Shahdadkot & Miro Khan talukas. While his mother Noor Bhari Khuhawar was a housewife. She gave motherly love to all of her children. His grandfather Sirai Muhammad Bux Khan Khuhawar-I Khanbahadur Pir Bux Khan Khuhawar-I died in 1932. He left behind 6 sons named 1) Khanbahadur Pir Bux Khan Khuhawar-II 2) Feroz Khan Khuhawar 3) Yar Muhammad Khan Khuhawar 4) Wajid Ali Khan Khuhawar 5) Safdar Ali Khan Khuhawar and 6) Imdad Hussain Khan Khuhawar. Most of them were philanthropists and played their vital role in the development of Shahdadkot. The great grandfather of Dr. Muhammad Yar Khuhawar, Sirai Pir Bux Khan Khuhawar-I, was a local tribal chief and he descended from Mian Dato Khuhawar who was a celebrated minister of Mian Yar Muhammad Kalhoro (1701-1719) and his son Mian Noor Muhammad Kalhoro(1719-1753), the rulers of Sindh . Sirai Pir Bux Khan Khuhawar-I was a socio-political and public spirited landlord. He had close relations with Sir John Keane was Commander In chief of British Army. Sir John Keane drew supplies from Shahdadkot for his Army on advancing towards Afghanistan, during first Anglo Afghan War in 1840. During that time Shahdadkot was badly hit by River Indus floods and everything was washed away in the whole area. Another important friend of Khanbahadur Pir Bux Khan Khuhawar-I, was General John Jacob who established many out posts to protect Upper Sindh Frontier from mountain robbers. These outposts guarded the border from 1839 to 1858 through Dost Ali, Shahdadkot, Garhi Khero, Rojhan, Khangarh (Jacobabad), Dilmurad, Garhi Hassan, Tangwani, Kandh Kot, Kumri and Kashmore posts. He constructed roads, bridges and canals to develop Garhi Khero, Shahdadkot, Kamber and Larkana areas and brought peace and trade in a turmoil conditions in the land. General John Jacob of Jacobabad died in 1858. After 1858 Khan Bahadur Pir Bakhsh Khan Khuhawar-I took initiatives to rehabilitate Shahdadkot town. He also brought illustrious saint and scholar Mian Noor Muhammad Mekan, his family members, disciples and other Hindu traders from Village Kanda / Balochistan to Mirokhan on 60 Bullock carts and made arrangements for their houses in the town. Soon after, Shahdadkot was again hit by a great flood disaster in 1874.
According to A.W.Hughes, Shahdadpur was a Government town in Kamber taluka of the Larkana Deputy Collectorate in 1874 and, distant about 30 miles north-north-west from Larkana. It was seated on the west bank of the Dato-Ji-Kur Canal, and had road communications with Kamber, Garhi Khairo Jamali, and Hamal, and was the Head-quarter Station of a Tapadar. The population, in number was about 783, comprised 464 Muslims of the Pirzada, Kalhora, Lashari, Sial, Magsi and Muhana tribes. The remainder (319) being Hindus. The chief man of note in this place was Pir Bakhsh Khuhawar, a very influential and public spirited Zamindar, who had done much towards raising this town to its former prosperity. (Gazetteer of the Province of Sind: Compiled by A.W.Hughes, F.R.G.S., F.S, Bombay UNCOV Civil Service, London George Bell and Sons, York Street, Covent Garden , 1876). A Certificate was awarded to Khanbahadur Sirai Pir Bux Khan Khuhawar- I, in the name of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, Empress of India by Governor General of Bombay and Viceroy of India on 1st January 1878 AD for his loyalty and good service as a landholder of Sindh.
The town of Shahdadkot flourished well in 2nd Afghan War in 1880s. The Indian British Government then decided to make Shahdadkot a new taluka of Upper Sindh Frontier / Jacobabad District in 1883-4. The Vernacular School of Shahdadkot which is now known as Government Main Primary School was established in 1887. Afterwards a dispensary was established in Shahdadkot in 1889 with the name of Queen Victoria of Great Britain. The total population of Shahdadkot town was 27,380 in 1891. The name of the town was changed from Shahdadpur to Shahdadkot in 1914. Ahmed Ali Khan Khuhawar, the maternal grandfather of Dr. Muhammad Yar Khuhawar lived in Kot Ameer Ali Khuhawar/ Shahi near Shahdadkot.Yar Muhammad Khuhawar, who was the father of Dr. Muhammad Yar Khuhawar, died in January 1978 while Noor Bhari Khuhawar mother of Dr. Muhammad Yar Khuhawar died in April 1965. The couple gave birth to 4 sons and 3 daughters. The names of the sons are as under 1) Advocate Ahmed Yar Khan 2) Dr. Muhammad Yar 3) Raja Rahim Yar and 4) Khuda Yar Khan. While their daughters were 1) Ghulam Aisha 2) Zulf-e-Memoona and 3) Ghulam Fatima. Yar Muhammad Khuhawar had 3500 Jarebs of agricultural land, gardens, and a great number livestock. Yar Muhammad Khuhawar had also married to Hidayat Khatoon Khuhawar. She gave birth to 1) Nisar Ahmed Khan 2) Dr. Mukhtiar Ahmed Khan and 3) Ahmed Aziz Khan and one daughter Amina Khatoon. Another wife of Yar Muhammad Khuhawar was Hooran Silro. She was mother of 1) Inayatullah Khan 2) Rahmatullah Khan 3) Naimatullah Khan and 4) Muttiullah Khan and 3 daughters Hamidan, Latifan and Ajeeban. The 4th wife of Yar Muhammad Khuhawar was Shahan Pathan of Shikarpur. She died childless. In short, Yar Muhammad Khuhawar had 11 sons and 7 daughters. One of his greatest desires was to educate his children. So mostly the children of Khuhawar families were sent to Karachi for acquiring standard education. At that time one of the greatest people Allama I.I.Qazi used to live there. The Khuhawar Fmilies were associated with this scholar. Imdad Ali Imam Ali Qazi (1886-1968), was a scholar, philosopher, jurist, and educationist. He is considered to be a founder of the University of Sindh at its present location at Jamshoro. Many works for Sindhi Art, literature, mysticism, education and history are attributed to him. He was a prolific writer, and along with his wife Elsa, he wrote a book on comparative religion, The Adventures of the Brown Girl in her Search for God, which was published by Arthur H Stockwell Ltd., England, in 1933. Qazi and his wife also worked on the translation of the verses of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai (1689-1752). Allama I.I Qazi died on 13 April 1968. In1930s, the brothers of Dr. Muhammad Yar Khuhawar, Nisar Ahmed Khuhawar and Dr. Mukhtiar Khuhawar lived in the house of Allama I.I.Qazi where his beloved wife Elsa Qazi taught them education. She also provided education to Nawab Akber Khan Bugti and Syed Ameer Hyder Shah and Syed Imdad Muhammad Shah, the sons of G.M.Syed, the founder of Nationalist Movement in Sindh. As Elsa Qazi had no children therefore rich families took their children in her house for education. These children were actually paying guests. She was awarded 500/= Rupees monthly for her educational services to these children. Allama I.I Qazi's wife Elsa died on 28 May 1967 after a brief but painful fight against a kidney problem. Dr. Muhammad Yar Khuhawar personally met with Allama I.I Qazi in 1966 at Karachi.
Early Life of Dr. Muhammad Yar Khuhawar The native village of Dr. Muhammad Yar Khuhawar was village Dokhi, some 10 Kilometers in the north of Shahdadkot. The village was situated on Shahdadkot-Imam Bux Jamali road on Sindh Balochistan border. Its neighbiuring villages were Imam Bux Jamali, Muhammad Khan Bhutto, Kot Chhatoo Mal, Noorpur and Shaho Jamali. This small village consisted on Khuhawar Houses and other peasants huts who cultivated the lands on Koor Dato, Edan Wah and Begari Canals. The head of the village was Yar Muhammad Khuhawar, who owned great fame in the area. In July 1948, a band of dacoits who belonged to Magsi, Brohi and Jamali tribes attacked village Dokhi. A villager was killed during this plundering by the dacoits. The band also fired over Dr. Muhammad Yar Khuhawars mother who faced the situation wisely and bravely. At that time, our great scientist was only 4 months old and his father Yar Muhammad Khuhawar was out of the village due to some work. On his return, he was told the incident. Finally he took initiatives to settle his family and children from this wild country to Shahdadkot town. He was a law abiding person therefore he didnt like bloodshed in the area. Police arrested the culprits and later they were sent to prison for 5 years. After releasing half of these culprits once again attacked a village near Amrote Sharif in which half of them were killed. Very shortly, the River Indus floods brought destruction in the district. Yar Muhammad Khuhawar shifted his family towards village Karira and founded a village after his name on the banks of Koor Dato Canal. In his last days he again shifted to Shahdadkot and purchased an old Haveli from Hindus. This old Haveli still stands in crumbling situation in the west of Shahdadkot city. In Shahdadkot, the family lived near the Jami Mosque and Shrine of Mian Ghulam Siddique Mekan (1844-1905). He was a Sufi saint of Qadri Lineage. The house consisted upon an old Haveli and servants quarters. There were 4 to 5 male and female servants in the house who cooked, washed and cleaned the buildings. They also took care of the horses and other livestock and birds. Dr. Muhammad Yar Khuhawar was of shy nature. He did not talk much in his childhood but paid attention to his studies. Academics/ Academics/ Qualifications Dr. Muhammad Yar Khuhawar got his early education from Government Main Primary School Shahdadkot. He passed his primary education with 4th standard and took admission in Government Municipal High School Shahdadkot from which he passed his Matriculation examination with 2nd Class in 1964. Mr. Abdul Sattar Bhatti was his ideal teacher who was also an illustrious administrative of the school in Shahdadkot. After passing Matric he took admission in C & S College Shikarpur from which he passed Intermediate examination in 2nd Class in 1966. He was not the brightest student at that time. Syed Munawar Shah, Illahi Bux Soomro and Jalaluddin Abro were his favourite friends. Two of them later met with him while he was on his academic visit to England. After college he realized himself to work for his career building. Seeing decline in his ancestral agricultural lands Dr. Muhammad Yar Khuhawar got admission in University of Sindh Jamshoro Sindh.
He received B.Sc (Hons) Chemistry from University of Sindh in 1970. In 1971 he passed his M.Sc (Organic) Chemistry from the same university with 1st Position and received Silver Medal. His later academics are as under; 1977 1982 1991 2000 PhD, Chemistry from University of Birmingham United Kingdom. Diploma, Shimadzu Corporation Japan. Senior Bright Fellow University of Massachusetts, Amherst United States of America. Doctor of Science (D.Sc) from Birmingham University England.

Personal Life Dr. Muhammad Yar Khuhawar married Akhter Khanum Khuhawar in 1968. She died in 1994. They have three sons Fahim Yar Khan (b. 1983) Furqan Yar Khan (b. 1985) and Muzamil Yar Khuhawar (b. 1986). They dont have any daughter. His wife Akhter Khanum Khuhawar belonged to a religious family of Warah town in district Kamber Shahdadkot. His eldest son Fahim Yar Khan is doing PhD in electronics from Italy, Europe. The second son has done B.E in Architecture from Mehran University Jamshoro. While his last son has passed D Pharmacy from Sindh University Jamshoro. At present he is working with Abbott Pharmaceutical Company Karachi. Dr. Muhammad Yar Khuhawar got second marriage in 2006. This time he married Rukhsana Khuhawar who belongs to Shahdadkot and is a housewife. The family leads a happy life in Sindh University Employees Cooperative Housing Society, Jamshoro. Dr. Muhammad Yar Khuhawar is also known as an avid reader, and the library of his large home was consisted of hundreds of scientific books and other publications. After his retirement he donated all of his valueable books to Seminar Library University of Sindh Jamshoro. He also enjoyed playing cricket and, tennis during his student life in England. During his academics he widely travelled through England, America, Japan, Turkey, Malaysia, India, Thailand, Hong Kong and Netherlands. In 2005, he performed Umera under Prime Ministers special package on receiving Best Teachers Award. In the same year he founded laboratory. His colleagues are Dr. Saima Qayyum Memon, Assistant Professor, Dr. Taj Muhammad Jahangir Khuhawar, Assistant Professor and Mr. Waqas Jamil, Lecturer who also teach in the same Institue. Dr. Muhammad Yar Khuhawar is also inspired by Sufism and its Philosophy. He is preacher of global peace, love and brotherhood. He also loves Sufi music. He loves to read the writings of Pir Syed Hisamuddin Rashdi and Dr. Nabi Bux Khan Baloch on the History of Sindh. He is fond of Shah Latif and Sheikh Ayaz poetry. His favourite colour is brown and he likes spring in seasons. He has some close friends which are associated to British Council England. He produced a great number of qualitative and intelligent scholars from the University of Sindh. He actively participated in the seminars, conferences and educational events observed in the university. It has been observed that he is simple, innocent and caring by nature. In response of a question he replied that had he not been research scholar, he would naturally have been an agriculturalist like his brothers but he soon realized that he is not the man for it so he worked in the field of studies. One the happiest moments of his life is the day when he was awarded with P.hD degree from Birmingham University in 1977. World renowned research scholar Prof. Belchor congratuled him specially and said to him that all teachers praised him because of his work. When he returned back to Pakistan and embarked upon his Research work people started making jokes about his working style because he would do all his work by himself. Even they spread this rumour that Dr. Muhammad Yar Khuhawar had no PhD Degree but now he is working to get his PhD but his undefatigable nature and simple nature proved him one of the greatest scientists of the world. It is his hard labour that earned him great recognition beyond borders. When he was asked of reason of being so simple and submissive by nature, he responded that Allah does not like pride.

When he was asked to describe some of his desires he replied that he wants to complete researches of his remaing Phd scholars and receive more International awards.Regarding his message for students in general and particularly for Shahdadkot he said that everyone should struggle for his or her life continuously and must not be disappointed. The students should trust on their labour. (The information contained in this lifesketch was collected by the author from 7th to 12th May 2013 and was used with the permission of Dr.Muhammad Yar Khuhawar.)
