Oil and Water Date: 5/1/13 Subject: Science Grade Level: First Signature of Classroom Teacher: I.

Student Standards Being Taught: 1. ELA(1) 13. Listen for meaning in conversations and discussions, including looking at the speaker without interrupting. 2. SC(1) 1. Select appropriate tools and technological resources need to gather, analyze and interpret data. 3. SC(1) 2. Identify basic properties of objects.

II. Objectives: After the lesson, students will understand the difference in density that oil and water have. The students will be able to discuss that water is heavier than oil and that water particles are polar that is why the oil does not dissolve III. Introductory Activities: 1. The students and the teacher will discuss items that may sink or float in water. 2. The teacher will play the sink or float Smartboard game with students help.

3. The teacher will introduce the idea that liquids may be the same type of element but each element may be different. Developmental Activities: 1. As a group have students hypothesize on whether or not the oil or water is heavier. If water would mix with the oil. Why or why not? 2. The teacher will hand out materials to create the water experiment- bottle, cup of water, cup of oil, food coloring 3. Have students pour the water in the bottle, then add the food coloring, then add the oil, and put the lid on. 4. Have students observe what is taking place. 5. Discuss the density of the water vs. the oil. How the oil weighs less than the water and that is why it sits on top. 6. Have students then shake the bottles up and observe that the water and the oil do not mix. 7. Discuss how the oil does not dissolve because water is polar and oil is nonpolar. 8. Have students sit the bottles on their desks and allow them to sit for 3 minutes. 9. The water and the oil will separate. Discuss how this proves all the above Culminating Activities: 1. Students will be given an observation worksheet for their science journal. 2. Have students complete the worksheet. Assessing Student Learning:

VI.

1. The teacher will observe the students observation worksheets to determine the understanding of the students VII. Modifications for Special Needs: I will assist special needs students when needed. If a special needs student needs support during the activity I will offer that to them. VIII. Resources: 1. SmartBoard 2. SmartBoard Game 3. Bottles with caps for groups 4. Water 5. Oil 6. Food coloring 7. Cups 8. Copies of journal worksheet IX. Self-Reflection of Lesson:

X.

Alternate Activities: Students who finish early or need an alternate activity will play the sink or float app on the iPad.
