Your mantra of initiation is Om Namah Shivaya. Your practice is composed of two parts, meditation and japa.

Japa is the silent, in the mind only; repetition of the mantra that can be done during just about any activity and ALWAYS should be done while you are falling asleep. Japa is also effective to use during times of any kind of distress. Japa is impossible to do too much, in fact you want it to eventually arise and carry on without thought required to trigger it. Like a song stuck in your head except not annoying. Meditation should last a minimum of 20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes in the evening. Meditation can be done sitting on furniture or on the floor that makes no difference. During this time sit comfortably with the back straight, eyes closed, use earplugs if you wish, put hands on knees and begin mantra on the in breath and the out breath. When thought arises that takes attention from mantra simply and gently redirect your focus back to the mantra. That process itself is the practice essentially. It is not a mistake or wrong that thought disturbs mantra. Having thought just makes you normal, not a failure in any way. If you use a small timer for your meditation time opening the eyes to look at a clock wont bother you. I stand ready to address any issues you may come across as you begin your sadhana. You are Graced with Highest Blessings on your efforts. Om Namah Shivaya!
