1 Sixth Grade Math Project on Anthropometry My class did a project on anthropometry for math class. Anthropometry is the measurement of human dimensions. We learned who Diane France was, measured ourselves, made graphs, estimated our heights, and another persons height. There were many people involved in this project, the sixteen students in my math class, and six teachers. This project shows the application of math into everyday life.

First, on day one, we did many things. We measured our radius bone, which is from the inside of your elbow to your wrist. My radius bone was eight inches. The mean is the average, the median is the number in the middle, the mode is the number that occurs most often, and the range is the maximum minus the minimum. My mean was 8.531, my median was8.25, my mode was eight, and the range was 1.5. On day two, we made a scatter graph. The scatter graph compares your height to the other students in the class. On the graph, the straight line splits the dots in half showing an estimate of an average persons height. Using the graph is simple. You follow the x and the y-axis to find the height of the person and the radius bone length of the person. That is how you can estimate height. Next, on day three, we estimated peoples heights. Your tibia bone is the bone from your knee to your ankle, and your humerus bone is from your shoulder bone to your elbow. My humerus bone is 11, my tibia is 12 my radius bone is 8 inches, and my height is 58 inches (4 10). I calculated the three formulas for height based on the length of my humerus, my tibia, and my radius. My predicted heights were 59.85, 59.7, and 60.1. The humerus formula worked best for me. The other student I estimated was an inch away from his actual height. The teachers were 1, .45, 2, and .5 inches away from their real heights.

Lastly, this is how you can apply math into everyday life. I enjoyed using the formulas and making the graph in this project. I thought it was difficult getting caught up in this project because I was sick when we did this. Out of all the times I calculated, the humerus equation was most often the most accurate.
