THEME: Painting with Haiku LESSON TOPIC: Creating Haiku Poetry OBJECTIVES: Language:
Students will be able to define what a Haiku is. Students will be able to write in pairs and individually their own Haiku

Content:
Students will learn what Haiku is; Students will learn 5-7-5 syllable structure of Haiku Students will create a traditional Haiku

MOTIVATION:
(Building background) Students will watch to videos about haiku. As a whole class, students will discuss the various elements presented in the videos

PRESENTATION:
(Language and content objectives, comprehensible input, strategies, interaction, feedback) Introduce the term Haiku Explain that it is a form of poetry and that we will watch a video explaining it. Show the video and discuss and reinforce the concept of Haiku. Give directions for the image pool activity. Check students' comprehension and model one example of Haiku using the words given by the students. Give directions for the fish bowl activity. Students will work with a partner. Check students' comprehension and model one example.

PRACTICE AND APPLICATION: (Meaningful activities, interaction, strategies, practice and application, feedback)
As a whole class, students give words related to the theme of birthday. Students can use the visual provided to find words. Individually, students create a Haiku using the pool of words. In pairs, students pick a nature related word from the fish bowl. Students work with a partner to create their authentic haiku. Students present their haiku to the class.

REVIEW AND ASSESSMENT: (Review objectives and vocabulary, assess learning)


Students' comprehension will be assessed throughout the activities and during their presentations.

EXTENSION:
Students will be asked to write a haiku about the nature at their house or in their town.
