Student Teachers Evaluation Assessment of Learning Outcomes

To what extent did the learners achieve the intended learning outcomes? Due to the fact that the class I was undertaking was a year 7 Technology mandatory, it was vital that demonstration was present during the practical lesson. By utilizing the demonstration teaching technique, it allowed the students to visually learn by observing every step carefully, with the guidance of the teacher whose role is to keep reaffirming and asking questions to monitor and gain conscious of whether the students had achieved the learning outcomes. This I believe was a success.

Describe the evidence you have for this. The students showed active and full conscious participation throughout the practical lesson. This was evident through how they responded to my questions during the demonstration. For instance, I asked so who can remind the class how many millimeters we want to cut the dowel? and Rosie was able to answer the question and added on the safety precautions they should take when using the tenon saw. This to me as the teacher, demonstrated and indicated that the student understood the task and therefore can successfully utilize the skills onto theyre projects. This was a positive aspect as the students went back to their benches an actually replayed the steps in their minds as they completed their projects step by step. (Refer to students work) Other evidence which were observed was the fact that the students were able to complete the task on time, without the constant need of asking the teacher Miss what do I do now? or Miss I dont understand, which was a success in the opinion of the supervising teacher who quoted on my concise and good demonstration skills. (Refer to Supervising teachers comments)

Outline the follow-up to this lesson for the learners. The students are now ready to move on to the final stages of their projects after gaining and learning all the skills learnt in class to make their designs. Before this the learners need to complete their process diary next lesson recording all the steps and procedures completed in class today; as the written work is one of the key components of a design project. It is vital for the teacher to stress to the students that all of them need to be up to the same stages of the project, as 30 percent of them have not completed their sanding, which is essential prior to any polishing. I will try to assist these students in my next visit to keep them on track.

According to my Colleague teachers comments, my organizational skills of the class and my concise demonstration skills, I was able to engage the students in the lesson. Being a student before I believe a clear explanation of the task is needed so that students can clearly understand what is expected of them during the lesson. I demonstrated the task in a logical order making sure that the students were listening and paying attention through eye contact and use of pauses. This helped the student understand the task and complete it themselves, which was evident as students didnt seem lost and did not ask questions such as Miss Can you help? or Miss can you show me how to do this?, the students went straight to their benches and went on with theyre work. Using examples of the two dowels that I had prepared for the lesson was also a useful strategy, as the students were able to see the kind of final product I was looking for and why we cut using that particular method. This again helped the explanation to be clear and concise.

Identify the teaching strategies / learning experiences that were least effective. Explain why. A strategy I would found least effective was during my one of my demonstrations I forgot to mention one of the final steps to be completed on the dowel, and as I result I had students who had cut the dowel and did not sand them for a smooth finish. So to solve this issue I tried to go around every table telling students individually how to complete the last step.

How appropriate was the timing throughout the various sections of the lesson? Why? The practical started at 1pm and ended at 2:30pm, this gave me plenty of time to demonstrate both exercises and to give students adequate time to work on their projects. I tried to explain the work clearly and kept a steady pace to make sure that the students in fact understood the work and are able to go back and complete the task without feeling lost, confused or wasting time.

Describe how the selection and use of resources supported learning in the lesson. Due to the fact that this was a practical lesson, no extra resources were given to the students. However because I had prepared to cut dowels prior to the lesson for my demonstration, it helped the students distinguish between the right cut and the wrong cut, and it helped them recognize why we cut using the rotating method. This was a success as I observed the students cutting the same way as I demonstrated. Identify what motivated the students. Explain why. Woodwork itself is interesting subject as it involves a lot of hands on projects and can be an advantage for students who are learning visually through the demonstrations. However some students dont tend to enjoy the subject and as I have observed in my prior visits, some of them tend to waste time wondering around the room and talking to other students, due to this lack of interest. To help keep them involved and interested, I decided to ask for volunteers (the students who were not interested) to demonstrate to the class after I had finished my demonstration, this for me emphasizes that the student has learnt the process, is engaging their peers and I have gained their full co-operation for the rest of the lesson.

Identify the classroom management strategies that were most effective. Explain why. Some strategies I found useful and effective is the use of pauses during my demonstrations just so the students can process the explanations and to get their full attention once again. Another was eye contact with students who were doing the wrong thing during my demonstrations; this helped the learner re-assure that silence and paying attention is what I am asking for. The final strategy was moving around the classroom assisting students and making sure they were on task. This helped me to see who understood the work, who is behind and assured me that after aiding them they will continue the work as I will come back to check on their progress.

What was most satisfying about the lesson? The most satisfying experience was seeing the students co-operating and making my role easier. Seeing them understanding the work and the fact that I was able to organize them around the bench for demonstration without any difficulty was also rewarding. The learners all followed instructions well, which made me feel more confident and what satisfied me the most was that I was able to engage all the students especially those who lacked interest, this as result allowed room for interaction with them while I was assisting them individually.

Based on these reflections, outline the steps you should now take to improve your teaching in future lessons. Based on these reflections it is vital that I take them into account for future references, as I will need to use the strategies I found effective again in my teaching and demonstrations. The strategies which were not a success need to be improved or removed completely from my teaching process. In order to assess the weakness and strengths, its important that I continue to self evaluate each lesso n taught to help improve and see how I can approach my teaching style in a different manner if necessary.
