The difference in the area (D) times the line pressure creates a "piston effect" force which pushes the seat against the ball surface resulting in a tight effective seal.

When the pressure in the valve cavity reach certain pressure (so that the total force from cavity pressure that act on the seat is larger than the total force causing by the upstream pressure), the trapped pressure will has enough force to push the seat and relief the valve cavity pressure.
