NComputing M300 Installation Manual

Installation Guide M300 M300 from NComputing is a kit of 3 which has one master device and 2 thin clients and all these are connected by means of network switch with Host Computer making it 3 users+1host thus 4 users using one CPU resource Basic Diagram of implementation The following diagram shows the implementation of NComputing .There is one Host PC shown in figure which is connected to a network. There is a network switch which is the base of all this setup. M300 has a kit of 3 which has one master device and 2 client devices. All these 3 devices are connected to host PC by means of switch and network cables. Thus we are sharing one CPU resource with 4 users(3 terminals + 1 host). This implementation is desktop virtualization and NComputing device is one such device used for desktop virtualization.Desktop virtualization is explained in the appendix section of this document. The architecture of desktop virtualization is shown in diagram below

Client 2 Master Client

From this diagram, the host PC is having CPU and is is connected to LAN through network switch and there are 3 users connected to host pc through 1 NComputing M300 master device and 2 client device and Vspace software installed on host PC manages user sessions by User extension protocol(UExp)

Installation and Configuration Steps Prerequisites You require to setup a network ,the person implementing this must have basic knowledge of networking, network configuration, IP addresses, preparing networking cables and basic knowledge of system administration atleast On the host PC, you must be logged on with Administrator user rights. else this software cannot be installed . Step 1 Configure IP address and ensure that this host PC is properly available into the network Creation of users Make appropriate users.see the picture below From Windows Explorer ->Go to Computer->right click->select Manage A computer management screen opens , as shown below Click on the "Local Users and Groups". It shows list of users as shown below.

Now create users as per your requirement as per screen given below Right click and select create new user

Following screen appears on selection of New User creation

Enter the details of user in the screen as shown above Save the details. A new user is created

Step 2 (IMP STEP) Admin rights on Machine From the picture given below, right click on Administrator user and select properties Please ensure that "Account is disabled" is unchecked as shown in figure. It should look as shown in figure given below

On Host Machine, install VSpace software which is provided on the CD along with the NComputing kit. Also you have option of downloading latest vspace software from www.ncomputing.com/downloads website

Step 3 Install and Registering Vspace software Your PC needs to be connected to internet for this.Once VSpace software is installed, from window>start button, you will see "Register Vspace" menu. You need to register your Vspace over the internet.VSpace is a product of NComputing Inc and is provided only with NComputing kits hence you much register your device with NComputing and hence fill in the information and register.Once registered, you will get a license code Vspace software and its role in virtualization etc details are given in the appendix section of this document

Step 4 Enabling Remote Access to Users Since NComputing clients will connect with the host PC through remote terminals, hence remote access to the users must be granted . The users which we have created will be granted remote access to host machine by this step Please click here for information on configuring remote access From This link, download the pdf file and refer it for configuration of remote access on host machine ***Without this step, the users will not be able to login to the vspace host machine.Hence the host machine must be enabled for remote login Step 4 After installing VSpace software, now connect the master device of M300 kit. How to identify Master Device? out of kit of 3, there is one big device and other 2 are small devices. Also there are 3 LAN ports on this device whereas on the other 2 devices, there is just one networking port Connect this master device with switch, connect keyboard, mouse, monitor to the master device VSpace screen will be shown Now configure IP address according to your network and refresh the vspace screen The vspace screen will now show the host machine name in the list If you get this screen with host pc name, then your configuration settings are correct. If you dont get your host pc in this list, then please recheck your network settings, the IP address, gateway and DNS Now click the connect button Ncomputing screen will be shown with "Press any key to start" Now press any key and you will be able to see the desktop of host computer

Step 5 Connecting master device with client devices

Please look at this image carefully. This is the master device of M300.It contains one network port to your front and two network ports to your left and right. The cable which is to your front along with monitor, keyboard and mouse comes from switch and is connected with master device. Only Master device needs to be connected to switch directly. The two client devices should not be connected with switch. These 2 client devices should be connected with only master device Now from two networking ports of master device, connect the 2 client devices with network cables. After connecting master device with 2 client devices through LAN cables(cat5/cat6) , connect keyboard, mouse, monitor to these devices Now if your master device is conneted to the host pc, then your client devices will directly show the "Press any key to start" screen with NComputing Logo Press any key to start the session and now you will be able to see the desktop of the host computer In this way, you will be able to connect the 3 users to the host PC making it 3 users + 1host machine setup

Viewing sessions On host PC, you will be able to see a screen like this

Clicking on sessions node, you will be able to view number of sessions .From here, the administrator can stop the session , send message to users logged on, the administrator can also watch the session of that user to observe what activity is going on the desktop of that user as shown in the screen below

Session management screen of VSpace on host PC

Appendix User Extension Protocol(UExp) This is the protocol on which the vspace software works .This is the session management protocol which manages remote user sessions with the host pc and takes care that no two user session overlaps so that security is maintained. VSpace software installed on the host PC takes care of this protocol.Vspace is a product of NComputing Inc. Desktop Virtualization explained This is the technique which enables to share computer resources to many users. Reason for why desktop virtualization is preferred It has many advantages Consider that one PC has 500 GB hard disk, 4 GB of RAM , a processor of 3 Ghz(nowadays any processor available in market have minimum this much processing speed) and such configuration PC used for only MS-Office and Internet purposes If we see this configuration, it is as good as a super computer 10 years ago, so just imagine that this much processing power with resources like huge storage hard disk, huge processing power of RAM is all waste for this type of desktop application. Strictly speaking, only 5% resources is been consumed and 95% CPU resource is wastage. Hence the concept of desktop virtualization emerged where we can share 1 desktop PC ranging from 3 to 40 users. The need for CPU for every user is elimnated and there is no compromise on performance in implementing this.

Disadvantages: The only one drawback of this approach is In case of the host PC crash/node down, the other 3 users cannot logon Solution to the Drawback Installing VMWare/Virtualbox software on host PC and installing VSpace in this virtual box so that the host machine remains safe and we can share the host created over virtual machines in the virtual box which is complicated but a good solution.
