Lesson Resources: Outre Gallery (249 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne), will need to organise transport and permission forms etc. Question booklet Pen Note pad/ clipboard Content of Lesson: Introduction 15min Students arrive at the gallery and are introduced to a gallery staff member. Staff member gives an introduction about the gallery and question booklets are handed out. The Outre staff member speaks to the students about the pop art found in the gallery. The teacher gives a brief overview of the pieces the students will be looking at and then divides them into four teams (so that student-adult ratio is met and so that the entire class is not overcrowding the space of artwork they are observing). Development 1.5 hours In their groups students are given time to explore the gallery, ask questions, fill out their booklets and watch a short film on pop art. Visual Thinking Strategy questions may include: - What is happening in this artwork? - What might be the purpose of this piece? - Why might the artist have done that? - How do you think the artist may have felt? - What do you find interesting? Why? - What is happening in this part of the artwork? Extension/Early finishers Extra time to explore the gallery, with supervision. Closure 10min Students are brought back to the foyer or a space in the gallery and discuss what they found interesting about the visit, what they enjoyed, what they might base their pop art piece on, and are questioned about the things they have learnt (see indicators). They are invited to ask questions and thank the staff before leaving to go back to school.
