ES 11 PROBLEM SET 1.

For the beam and loadings shown, write the shear and moment equations using the Method of Sections. Note that the beams are connected by a pin at C and E is a fixed support. You need not simplify the equations.

2. The beam shown is supported by a uniformly distributed load and a roller at point E. Draw the Shear and Moment Diagrams using Area Method. Indicate the values at all change of loading positions and at all points of zero shear. Also specify the degree of each curve in the diagrams. What is the maximum shear? Maximum bending moment? (Note: Solve for value of the distributed load before drawing the shear and moment diagrams) (ANS: Vmax = -204.58 lb, Mmax = 799.31 lb in)

4. For the loading system shown, draw the shear and bending moment diagrams using the meathod of sections. What is the maximum shear and bending moment? (ANS: Vmax = -44 kN, Mmax = 52.196 kNm)

5. The beam shown has a hinge at E, 18 m from

the left end. Draw the shear and bending moment diagrams. Determine the value of maximum shear and bending moment

3. Using the Method of Sections, write the Shear and Moment Equations for the loading system of the beam shown. The beam is connected by an internal hinge at point C. You need not simplify the equations. (Note: Moment at internal pin/hinge is always equal to zero, i.e MC = 0)
