Kaycee Hallett High School English 11-12 LESSON PLAN: Graphic Organizers and Search Techniques Lesson Objective:

1. Show how to use an online graphic organizer and some basic search resources Standards: IL.2: The students will learn how to find information effectively. The information literate student accesses needed information effectively and efficiently. IL.3: Students will pick and choose the information that they find the most helpful and the most effective for developing their lessons. The information literate student evaluates information and its sources critically and incorporates selected information into his or her knowledge base and value system. IL.4: Students will work as a group to use the information that they find as a group to create a lesson plan The information literate student, individually or as a member of a group, uses information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose. Time 1- 45 (some 1-55) minute class period Materials/Prep https://bubbl.us/ InfOhio Smart Board http://sirsi.swoca.net/opac/WJ/WJCC/ laptops Valentines books Beginning of Lesson 1. Before the class begins have https://bubbl.us/ loaded onto the Smart Board with the Valentines Day example open on it. Have them sit near the front not the back Do NOT let them open their laptops 10 minutes max.

2. Go over why graphic organizers are really helpful ie. they keep all the thoughts and information and sources for the lesson the students will be planning in one place. Introduce the Graphic Organizer and the Bubbl.Us site. explain the graphic organizer I made for a lesson explain the sources that I used explain where I went to find the sources that I got 3. With the students create a graphic organizer using Bubbl. Us and going through the whole search and find process. Open new Bubbl. Us show login/registration needs done in order to save Topic pre-picked and started--Bakers Show them how to go to Infohio have them pick the resources in infohio where they would like to look and search for the topic in those resources Show them the Online CAT show them the different search features of the online CAT search by easy books search by nonfiction books have them pick which books they would like or note the call number Show how to do a more specified Google search and actually do it quotation marks + marks this and this no spaces - marks this but not this no spaces 4. From here let the students open their laptops and direct them to www.bubbl.us . Let them start making their own graphic organizer and walk around and help with any questions or searches. pass out InfOhio log-in sheets Handout Needs to be created at least on google docs if not printed out, resources that are good they can use with live links.

Differentiation: 1. Less time on what I created and more time making the class example. 2. Let the students come up and manipulate the searching and the graphic organizer on the SmartBoard themselves

Possible Pitfalls/Solutions: 1. Make sure they sit up close

2. Make sure no one is open on their laptops or phones 3. Make sure you dont stick too long on the example and that you let the students do the manipulation as well Plan B: Dont show an example go directly into building one as a class group, have each person do at least one search and add one bubble to the bubble graph.
