Misconceptions about the IB Diploma Program


The IB Diploma is only for really smart kids. The IB Diploma is not recognized at major universities.
The IB Diploma is just a bunch of tests.

What is the IB mission and legal status?


The IB is a not-for-profit foundation, motivated by its educational mission, focused on the student.

Mission The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

Legal status The IB is a non-profit making Swiss Foundation registered in 1968. The activities of the organization are determined by an Act of Foundation approved by the Swiss authorities.

What does the Diploma Programme curriculum contain?


The curriculum contains six subject groups and a core of three parts.

Students study concurrently:

The IB Diploma
Work completed in the Junior/Senior Year Six Courses/exams in the Six subject areas:
3 Standard Level (SL) 150 hours 3 High Level (HL) 240 hours

The Extended Essay Theory of Knowledge (TOK) Creativity, Action and Service (CAS)

Diploma Requirement:
The Extended Essay
4000 word study in depth of a limited topic of the students choice Support of Advisor Externally assessed Begins in Junior year, completed Dec. Senior year Preparation for research and writing skills expected at college

The IB Certificate
Available for any IB course (except TOK) Students complete ALL course work (internal and external assessments) AND sit for the exam IB Certificate is awarded by the IBO Students may apply for college credit or advanced placement based on their IB Certificate
