Kissing Doorknobs is written by Terry Spencer Hesser.

It is a book about obsessive compulsive disorder and how it affects peoples lives. Tara is eleven years old and has undiagnosed OCD. She had always been a scaredy cat, but instead of going away over time, it got worse. Then one day she heard the rhyme step on a crack and you break your mothers back. For some reason, this stuck with her, and she felt like she had to count cracks on the sidewalk. She also started to worry more about things such as her parents dying in a car crash. Her fears got worse and worse and her ways of dealing with them less and less orthodox. Her mother had a hard time understanding why Tara felt the way she did, and why she had to act the way that she had started to. Taras parents brought her to countless doctors and psychologists, hoping to find out what was bothering her. They stopped when Taras new friend Donna helped her to stop some of her constant worrying. By being incredibly reckless and indifferent, Donna gave Tara other things to worry about besides the cracks on the road. But when Donna had to go to a boarding school for pregnant teenagers, Taras behavior got a lot worse incredibly quickly. Taras quirks came back stronger and more often. It wasnt until her fathers friend Mr. Jacobson saw her kissing the doorknob repeatedly did anyone realize what was truly wrong. One of his students had OCD, so he sent him over to talk to the family. The student he sent, Sam, explained what OCD was to her family and gave them his counselors card. Tara, Sam, Donna, and Taras little sister Greta work together to help each other get through the tough times.
