CLASSIFICATION OF THE CRANIAL NERVES

EFFERENTS FROM BRAIN General Somatic Efferents (GSE) Cell bodies lie in the brain stem or spinal cord and whose axons innervate skeletal muscles derived from SOMITES GSE Cranial III Oculomotor Cranial IV Trochlear Cranial VI Abducent Cranial XII Hypoglossal Special Visceral Efferents (SVE) Cell bodies in brain stem, innervate skeletal muscles which are derived from mesenchyme of the branchial arches and are associated with nerves that synapse on post ganglonic neurons that innervate smooth muscles or glands SVE Cranial V Cranial VII Cranial IX Cranial X Cranial XI Some Trigeminal to supply mastication muscles facial Glossopharyngeal Vagus Spinal accessory

General Visceral Efferents (GVE) Cell body lies within the CNS and whose fibers innervate smooth muscles or glands. GVE Cranial III autonomic component Cranial VII Glands Cranial IX Glands Cranial X Glands

AFFERENTS TO BRAIN General Somatic Afferents (GSA) GSA Cranial V Trigeminal Cranial IX Glossopharyngeal Cranial X Vagus Cranial VII Facial Special Sensory Afferents (SSA) Convey information to the brain by highly specialise receptors e.g. Cranial II Optic Cranial VIII Vestibulo chochlear Special Visceral Afferents (SVA) Similar to SSA but receptors are specialised e.g. Chemoreceptors Cranial I Olfaction Taste Cranial VII Facial Cranial IX Glossopharyngeal Cranial X Vagus General Visceral Afferents (GVA) Receptors locate principally in serous lining or muscle layers of Body Viscera Pacinian corpuscles, free nerve endings or nerve endings with poor emcapsulation Cranial IX Glossopharyrgeal Cranial X Vagus Efferent Nerves from CNS GSE = General Somatic Efferent SVE = Special Visceral Efferent GVE = General Visceral Efferent Afferent Fibers to the Brain GSA = General Somatic Afferent SSA = Special Sensory Afferent SVA = Special Visceral Afferent GVA = General Visceral Afferent
