An Original Screenplay By Holly Copella

FIRST DRAFT

DANCING WITH THE DEVIL

FADE IN: INT. COUNTRY CLUB/BALLROOM The room is decorated for an elegant wedding. We see the bride and groom sipping champagne at the head table with bridesmaids and bridegrooms on either side. The ballroom is filled with well-dressed men and women. At one of the distant round tables, we see a young man in a tuxedo, CARSON HASTING, sitting alongside and attractive young woman in a black evening dress. She's his sister, KELSY HASTING. Kelsy appears cheerful while watching the bride and groom. Carson slouches in his chair with a frown. He appears bored. CARSON (mutters) Just throwing it in our faces-if you ask me. Kelsy talks through her gritted smile. KELSY No one's asking, Carson. polite. Carson straightens with a groan. CARSON Polite. There's never been a polite person in that entire family. He casually looks around the room. Carson's POV. We see the father of the bride, BURTON SHETFIELD, at the parents' table. He appears cheerful at present. CARSON (O.S.) You've got bloodsucking Burton Shetfield--His fifth or sixth wife, Kitty--meow. Wonder how long she'll live-We see KITTY SHETFIELD, Bruton's overly attractive, large breasted wife, who wears a revealing dress. She smiles then immediately frowns when no one's looking. Be

CARSON (O.S.) Then there are the children. You could have the earth swallow that entire table, and it wouldn't bother me one bit. We see the cheerful bridal table. The bridesmaids are sixteen-year-old, TESS SHETFIELD, twenty-year-old CHRISSY SHETTFIELD, twenty-four-year old NELL SHETFIELD, and the twenty-two-year old bride, a former Shetfield, JENNY WILDER. On the groom's side are PAUL WILDER, HADDON GRIMSHAW, DAVIS SHETFIELD, and the groom, STANLEY WILDER. We return to Carson's table. His mood hasn't changed any. KELSY Chrissy's okay. CARSON You may like her, but she's no better than the rest of the family. I wonder why the hell we're even here--after what Burton did to our father. KELSY Behave, Carson. Remember you're a Hasting. We're better than that. CARSON Maybe you are, Sis, but I have a very large ax to grind. Carson groans and stands. CARSON I need a drink. Kelsy casually extends her glass and a frown to match Carson's. Close in on Burton's table. We see Burton at the parents' table talking to the man standing behind him, BOSLEY. BURTON Bosley, would you get my daughter's wedding gift from our room safe? Bosley nods and leaves the room. Carson passes Bosley with his drinks and eyes the stern looking man. Carson makes a face and returns to his seat alongside Kelsy and places the drink before her. CARSON I don't know which bookend frightens me more--Bosley or Colton.

KELSY Definitely Colton. There must be a reason they always leave him at home. CARSON Perhaps he's not housebroken. can't hold out--I need a cigarette. Kelsy looks at him with some surprise. KELSY You said you'd quite a month ago. CARSON I lied. Carson leaves the table. Kelsy watches him and frowns. More people seem to leave for the same reason once dinner is finished. INT. PENTHOUSE SUITE We see Bosley enter the penthouse suite. within the shadows nearby. INT. BALLROOM Kelsy appears bored while watching from her table as Burton dances with his daughter, Jenny. The elegant hall is filled with about four hundred people. Kelsy sips her drink and looks at the clock. She groans. Chrissy approaches with a pleasant smile. Kelsy immediately pretends to be enjoying herself. CHRISSY Isn't this terrific? I want my wedding to be even grander. KELSY Marry a man with a big family. CHRISSY Dad's having a good time for a change. Wish I could say the same for Kitty. We see Kitty drinking steadily, alone at the parents' table. Not far from her, we see Davis having a few firm words with his wife, Nell. Kelsy watches the feuding couple. KELSY He's always on her, isn't he? Someone moves I

Chrissy stares at Davis. CHRISSY My brother and Nell have been having some problems. Her family is very wealthy. Guess my brother can't quite live up to her standards. KELSY Really? It didn't take her to be the snobbish type. CHRISSY She puts up a good front. Davis tells me what she's like behind closed doors. Her brother's a real prince though. Chrissy looks around with anticipation. CHRISSY I was hoping he'd show up--even if he wasn't invited. What became of Carson? Didn't escape already, did he? I need someone to dance with. KELSY Me too. He won't get far. I drove. When will I meet Nell's prince of a brother? CHRISSY You'll have to come out to visit our estate in the country. He lives nearby and often floats in and out. I wanted to invite him as my date tonight, but Daddy wanted to avoid an ulcer for one evening. They don't agree on anything. Colton almost punched him last week. KELSY Yes--Colton. Pity he couldn't make the reception. CHRISSY Colton is a bit abrasive. Certainly not wedding reception material. Both laugh.

CHRISSY Let's scope out Stanley's family from the dance floor. I'll take anything under thirty. You can have the geriatric set. KELSY Very funny. CHRISSY Honestly, Kelsy--you do like them old. KELSY Not old--just charming and distinguished. CHRISSY Yeah--old. Kelsy rolls her eyes. floor. INT. CORRIDOR Bosley leaves the penthouse with an irritable look. He looks up and down the hall. We see the stairwell door slowly shut. Bosley hurries along the hall and approaches the stairs. He pushes open the door and looks inside. Hey! BOSLEY Come back here! Chrissy pulls her toward the dance

Bosley hurries into the stairway. INT. STAIRWAY -- CONTINUOUS We see Bosley hurry down the stairs. We hear someone else running down the stairs ahead of him. Bosley removes a gun from his shoulder holster and hurries after them. INT. BASEMENT CORRIDOR -- CONTINUOUS Bosley comes out of the stairway and into the basement corridor. We hear large laundry machines from the nearby laundry room. He approaches the laundry room. We see a door behind him open. An ax gripped in black, gloved hands raises behind him. Bosley hesitates and begins to turn. In the shadows, we see the ax fall along with a faint gasp. INT. BALLROOM Kelsy and Chrissy dance to the fast song together on the dance floor. We see Carson to the side of the dance floor watching them with a humored smile and a half finished drink in his hand. Chrissy hurries to him and pulls him to the dance floor. Hes barely able to set his drink down.

CARSON I don't dance-CHRISSY You do now--you old fuddy. Carson attempts to dance with them. unenthusiastic. He appears awkward and

KELSY That was a long cigarette. CARSON I may have checked a few baseball scores in the lounge-Kelsy playfully smacks his arm. The song changes to a slow one. Carson turns to Kelsy, but Chrissy quickly pulls him away. He attempts a smile at Kelsy then slow dances with Chrissy. Kelsy appears humored and approaches the crowded bar surrounded by groomsmen. Paul, brother to the groom, and Haddon, friend of the groom, both smile as she approaches. They appear to playfully argue while checking her out. A man suddenly turns and collides with Kelsy. He keeps her steady. VICTOR I'm terribly sorry. Are you okay? Kelsy looks at the man standing before her. He's a charming, older man, possibly in his forties with gray throughout his hair and goatee. Kelsy stares into his handsome, blue eyes and smiles. KELSY Yes, I'm fine. VICTOR It's dangerous--with all these people. The only safe place around here is on the dance floor. KELSY Pity all the single guys are busy getting smashed at the bar. VICTOR Perhaps I could save you the danger of that crowd and see you safely to the dance floor myself. Victor extends his hand. Kelsy smiles warmly and places her hand in his. He escorts her back to the dance floor.

Both Paul and Haddon frown and look at one another. Victor takes the gentlemanly approach to dancing and holds Kelsy a comfortable distance from him and holds her hand suavely in his. Kelsy catches a look from Chrissy, who smirks and shakes her head. Kelsy hides her smile. KELSY You must be from the groom's side. I know almost everyone on the bride's side. VICTOR More like a friend of the family. I barely know anyone here, but I felt it polite to at least make an appearance for an hour or so. KELSY Anticipating leaving early unnoticed? VICTOR That was the plan. KELSY Then I guess I'm lucky I caught you for a dance. VICTOR With those remarks, you may never get rid of me. Victor dips her slightly then pulls her back up and closer to him. Kelsy doesn't seem to mind. Later. Kelsy and Victor dance several fast songs and a few more slow songs. Carson appears to eye them several times with a strange, distrusting look. Victor seems to know many dance steps and dazzles Kelsy with them. He manages to maintain contact even during the faster songs and dramatically dips her. Kelsy laughs each time. Burton talks to Jenny, kisses her, and then leaves the ballroom. Another slow song begins. Carson approaches Kelsy and attempts a smile, although he appears irritated. CARSON Mind if I have a dance with my sister? VICTOR After this one, she's all yours. I really must be going. Carson nods although he appears annoyed. Kelsy as Carson returns to the table. Victor smiles at

VICTOR I think your brother would like to kill me. KELSY Maim perhaps, but certainly not kill. He's the overly protective type. VICTOR Can't say I blame him. I'm liable to whisk you away-unfortunately, my whisking days are pretty much over. KELSY (warm smile) Considering we've been on this dance floor over an hour, I'd say you have a few good whisks left. Victor chuckles lowly. He dips her gracefully then pulls her back into his arms and holds her a long moment. VICTOR You may be right. He releases her and kisses her hand with a charming smile. Victor caresses her hand. VICTOR Would you object to a short walk on the terrace before I bow out gracefully? KELSY I could use some fresh air. Victor links her arm to his and guides her from the dance floor to the back terrace and garden. Carson nearly leaps from his chair. Chrissy approaches Carson and is nearly run over. She watches them leave with her own surprised look. CHRISSY What is with her and old men? Carson frowns and watches them disappear beyond the terrace doors. CARSON At least they go down easier when I hit them. Carson attempts to bolt past her. Chrissy catches his arm and nearly pulls him to the floor.

CHRISSY Turn it off for just one night, Carson. She's a grown woman. CARSON These old guys know every grope trick in the book. I'm just going to make sure he minds his manners. Carson hurries across the room. EXT. GARDEN -- NIGHT Victor and Kelsy walk along the elegant, well-lit garden path. Victor holds her hand to his arm as they walk. KELSY I certainly had more fun then I thought I would. Maybe you'd reconsider and stay awhile longer? VICTOR I'm sure it'll be plenty exciting after I'm gone. KELSY Doubtful. This crowd isn't generally fun. Too busy worrying about appearance and all that. VICTOR I assume you're not related. KELSY Through marriage many, many years ago. My father was partners with Burton Shetfield. But that's a story in itself. Victor stops her and faces her. VICTOR Not fond of the father of the bride? KELSY He's never done anything to me, so it's an unfair question. Victor nods and glances at his watch. and smiles warmly. He looks back at her Chrissy hurries after him.

VICTOR It's always best to wait and form your own opinion, rather than listen to another's. KELSY You seem to be pressed for time. You've looked at your watch about twenty times tonight. VICTOR I'm very late for a prior engagement. But it was worth it. Kelsy studies him a moment and smiles gently. KELSY You're married, aren't you? Victor stares at her a long moment. change to her remark. VICTOR I really must be going. Victor raises her hand and kisses it warmly. VICTOR Thank you for a wonderful evening. He kisses her hand a second time, releases it, and walks toward the back of the garden. Kelsy watches him. We hear Carson's voice calling. CARSON Kelsy! Victor looks back a moment with a warm smile. Kelsy returns the smile then looks back in the direction of Carson's voice. She looks back across the garden. Victor is gone. INT. BALLROOM We see the dance floor crowded with couples. Kelsy dances to the slow song with Carson and Chrissy dances with Haddon. Kelsy appears bothered. KELSY I certainly pick them, don't I? CARSON You'd be better with guys your own age. At least most of them aren't married. Guy probably had kids your age. His smile doesn't

KELSY But he was a perfect gentleman. CARSON He was married--and entertaining a girl half his age. That's neither perfect nor gentlemanly. KELSY But he respected that boundary. He didn't even try to kiss me. He knew to walk away. It's the perfect romance. Mysterious man and a brief interlude--very romantic, and no fear of pregnancy. CARSON No harm in fantasizing, I suppose. It's certainly better then the reality of men. Just break your heart and your spirit. KELSY You'd love to see me a spinster, wouldn't you? CARSON I'm going gray worrying about you. After I'm completely gray, my hair will start to fall out. You don't want to see me bald, do you? Kelsy laughs softly. We see COLTON, a very tall, muscular man with a rugged appearance about him, approach Burton by the bar. Both men appear agitated. Kelsy and Carson both stare with strange looks. KELSY What do you suppose he's doing here? CARSON All good dogs like to be near their masters. Kelsy smirks and playfully slaps Carson. them. Carson groans. CARSON Since your fling left, can we cut out early? Tess approaches

Why?

KELSY Having a bad time?

CARSON Tess's been following me around. I think she likes me. She's coming this way. KELSY A little crush? CARSON Little? She's damned aggressive for a sixteen-year-old. KELSY I'm ready whenever you are. Carson practically drags Kelsy from the dance floor. INT. LAUNDRY -- DAY We see several police standing around an over turned laundry cart. Several sheets are soaked in blood. Bosley lie on the pile of sheets. DETECTIVE FRANK shakes his head. Another officer, MURPHY, holds up the bagged, bloody ax. MURPHY Subtle weapon choice. FRANK Must've acted spontaneous. Not a weapon most carry about on their person. Did you get a hold of Mr. Shetfield? MURPHY He's upstairs in his suite whenever you need to speak to him. INT. PENTHOUSE SUITE -- LATER Kitty paces the balcony doors in her satin bathrobe. She appears completely distraught. Detective Frank sits in a chair across from Burton. BURTON I'd sent Bosley to our suite to get my daughter's wedding gift from the safe. That was the last time I saw him. When he didn't come back, I came here looking for him. The safe was cleaned out. (MORE)

BURTON(Cont) I assumed he'd taken off with the valuables. Do you think he was killed for the contents of my safe? FRANK The only thing on him was his wallet and an empty shoulder holster. His watch and rings were still on him as well. BURTON My wife had several pieces of jewelry in the safe. I had some antique gems in there for my daughter. There was a very large diamond among them. In cash, there was probably only a couple hundred. I use credit when I'm out. FRANK Someone undoubtedly robbed the safe, Bosley caught them, chased them, and was killed in the laundry room. He was murdered between seven and eight, according to the last seen him. We'll need to inspect your room and get a copy of your guest list. BURTON Nearly four hundred guests--a lot of people had guests none of us knew. FRANK There's a good chance a cross reference will provide someone with a record. INT. HASTING ESTATE/LOUNGE Kelsy hangs up the phone with a look of concern. enters and shuffles through some bills. CARSON Where do all these bills come from? Kelsy quickly turns to face Carson. KELSY That was Chrissy on the phone-Carson

Carson continues to sort through the mail without looking at her. CARSON You paid that much for that dress? My God! That's it--no more parties. Kelsy snatches the bills from him and startles him. KELSY Bosley was murdered last night. CARSON What? CARSON Always knew he'd get himself into something. KELSY They think it was someone from the reception. CARSON You were with me all night-stick to that. KELSY This is serious, Carson. CARSON No kidding--that's why you were with me all evening. Kelsy sinks into thought and walks away from him. watches her. CARSON What's going through your head? KELSY I need to go to Chrissy's house. I need to have a look at that guest list. CARSON There's no reason for you to get involved, Kelsy. We barely knew Bosley. KELSY Burton's safe was robbed. They think whoever robbed the safe must've killed Bosley. Carson

CARSON Which still doesn't involve us. KELSY Out of all the guests party, we're probably ones whose family was financially ruined by at the the only nearly Burton.

CARSON Don't be saying that, Kelsy. We don't need the police probing around in our lives. Just stay out of it and see what happens. KELSY We didn't kill Bosley. CARSON Your friend Victor made a quick exit. You think he did it! Kelsy becomes uncomfortable. KELSY Don't be ridiculous. CARSON Imagine the balls on that one? Kills a man and practically seduces you on the dance floor only moments later. Kelsy grabs her car keys and hurries toward the door. KELSY I need to take a drive. CARSON (calls after her) Not far! Gas is expensive! EXT. ZOO -- DAY Kelsy walks along the zoo-not looking at anything in particular. She leans on the rail and looks to the bangle tigers on their rocks. She sighs and remains in thought. She looks to her right. We see a man in sunglasses reading a zoo map. Kelsy watches him a moment longer. She casually turns and sits on the bench near a woman and her two children. Kelsy casually puts on her sunglasses and looks around. We see another man to the other side looking at a zoo map. Kelsy slowly stands and casually walks toward the reptile house. Both men move toward the reptile house as well.

INT. REPTILE HOUSE -- CONTINUOUS Dim lighting. Both men enter the reptile house and look around the groups of school children running from glass wall to glass wall. Both look around and remove their sunglasses. They hurry through to the second door leading out. INT. EMPLOYEE'S LOUNGE -- CONTINUOUS Kelsy stands by the door and looks out the small window into the reptile house. A hand falls on her shoulder. Kelsy gasps and spins around. A woman in a zoo uniform stares at her. ATTENDANT Can I help you? KELSY You already have. Thanks. Kelsy slips out the door. EXT. HASTING ESTATE -- DAY We see Kelsy and Carson's small but elegant estate. INT. HALLWAY Kelsy enters and locks the door behind her. She tosses her keys onto the hall table with some disgust. She walks along the hall then stops. She slowly approaches the lounge with a strange look. INT. LOUNGE -- CONTINUOUS We see Kelsy standing in the doorway with a horrified look. Kelsey's POV. We see things scattered about the lounge. INT. HALLWAY -- CONTINUOUS Kelsy turns to the hall table and grabs the phone. We hear a clunk from upstairs. Kelsy carries the portable phone to the bottom of the stairs and looks up them. KELSY (into the phone) Hello? Someone's in my house. I can hear them upstairs. (pause) 2419 Harrothway (pause) I'm on my way out now. Kelsy grabs her car keys and hurries for the front door.

She opens the door and nearly collides with a man in the doorway. Kelsy screams. The delivery man cries out with surprise and nearly drops the dozen roses. DELIVERY MAN Jesus--lady. You nearly gave me a heart attack. We hear someone on the stairs. Kelsy whirls around. We see Carson hurry down the stairs with a look of hostility. CARSON Can you believe this mess! The delivery man attempts to give her the flowers. DELIVERY MAN Delivery for Kelsy Hasting. Kelsy ignores him and hurries toward the steps and Carson. What happened? police. KELSY I called the

CARSON I found the place like this ten minutes ago. DELIVERY MAN I need a signature-CARSON I must've forgotten to set the alarm. Carson hurries past her to the delivery man. He scribbles his signature and snatches the flowers. Carson shakes the roses at her. CARSON This is all because of that what's his name--Victor. Why else would someone break into our house and take nothing? The delivery man eyes them and leaves. KELSY Which way do you want it? Either I tell the police or I don't. Kelsy snatches the flowers from him. and reads it out loud. She removes the card

KELSY Thanks for the wonderful evening--V. Great. There's a knock on the open door. Both spin. We see the two men from the zoo standing in the doorway. They are JERRY COOPER and HARPER DILLIN. Kelsy lets out a startled scream, causing Carson to jump as well. Jerry flashes a badge. JERRY Miss Hasting--I'm Jerry Cooper. This is Harper Dillin. We're private detectives. We'd like to speak to you about last night. CARSON Now's not really a good time. HARPER It's important that we talk to you. It'll only take five minutes. KELSY My house has just been ransacked. Somehow I don't think your idea of important compares at the moment. JERRY There's a strong possibility they're connected. Just give us five minutes. Kelsy groans and casts the roses down. men. She glares at both

KELSY Why the hell were you following me? JERRY Mr. Shetfield paid us to follow you after viewing the wedding video from last night. Jerry extends a picture of her dancing with Victor. JERRY His daughter, Christine, said you were with this man early in the evening--just after the time of the robbery and murder. (MORE)

JERRY (Cont) She said his name is Victor. He wasn't on the guest list. What can you tell us about him? Did he give a last name? Phone number--contact information? KELSY He never gave me a last name or any other information, for that matter. I figured he was married. We had a few dances and some very light conversation. I really know nothing about him except he's a very good dancer and extremely charming. HARPER Those flowers--they're from him? Did you tell him where you lived? KELSY No, but the guest book lie open all evening. He could've found out my last name in there. We're listed in the phone book. HARPER You do realize this man is probably a thief and a murderer. KELSY It had crossed my mind. JERRY You're sure he didn't mention his last name? KELSY Yes--I'm positive. I doubt his name was even Victor. We hear police sirens and a car pulling up outside. KELSY I'm sure Burton would like his jewels back, but I don't have them, and I have no way of finding this Victor. Now that I've answered your questions, you can tell the police how you've been following me and about the state of my house.

JERRY We didn't search your house. KELSY You can discuss it with the police and tell them where you were after I lost you at the zoo. I get the strange feeling whoever broke in my house was looking for Burton's jewels. That looks pretty bad for you. Both men turn to see the police behind them. INT. LOUNGE Carson replaces objects to their correct places while Kelsy holds her head and listens to Detective Frank. FRANK So you admit the first time you saw Victor was approximately seven thirty? KELSY Yes--that's when we danced. He didn't leave my sight until about nine o'clock or later. FRANK The man's likely our killer. Are you sure you're telling me everything? KELSY I can't image why a killer would send flowers to my home. They can be traced back to him rather easily. I'm sure someone else knew him at the party. I think you'll discover he was just trying to hide the fact that he's married. FRANK We'll check with the other guests. Did you see what kind of car he drove? KELSY No--he left through the garden. Did you check into those private detectives Burton hired?

FRANK They're legitimate. Shetfield hired them this morning. It may be his intention to find him before us. CARSON Why? FRANK Burton Shetfield has a few shady operations. There could be more stolen then he's willing to admit. KELSY Thieves stealing from thieves. I say let them fight it out. FRANK That gets even more messy. Is there anything else you'd like to tell me about this Victor? Kelsy glances at the photo of her and Victor. away and sighs. KELSY He didn't act much like a man who'd just axed a man to death. FRANK They never do. Kelsy holds her head and stares at the photo a moment longer. KELSY He was really rather charming. Would a man who's just brutally murdered someone hang out at a party for nearly two hours? Isn't that risky? I mean, it's not as if he needed an alibi. No one even knew him. CARSON That does seem quite odd-allowing himself to be seen in an area crawling with cameras and witnesses. But maybe he's an exhibitionist. FRANK Serial killers sometimes call the police to mock them. You wouldn't expect that either. She looks

Frank takes the photo from her. FRANK I'll need to take this for evidence. Kelsy watches the photo being pulled away. her then straightens. FRANK Made quite an impression on you, didn't he? If he contacts you in any way, notify us immediately and get far away from him. Detective Frank takes the card from the flowers. FRANK We'll check with the flower shop and see who purchased them. Maybe he was careless and used a credit card. INT. SHETFIELD ESTATE/CHRISSY'S BEDROOM Chrissy sits on her bed in a dramatic lounging robe and clicks through television channels with the remote while on the phone. CHRISSY It'll be good for you, Kelsy. You and that handsome brother of yours. You'll come out here and stay the weekend. It'll be relaxing--get your mind off of this whole mess. KELSY (V.O.) I don't know. I'm still pissed at your father for that detective thing. CHRISSY He has detectives following me all the time trying to keep me pure and innocent--damned if it hasn't worked. I need to get laid. Chrissy giggles then peers at the television. update with Victor's picture on the screen. We see an Frank watches

CHRISSY Oh--your geriatric boyfriend is back on the news. Haven't found him yet. I hope you're over that old man. INT. HASTING ESTATE/KELSY'S BEDROOM -- CONTINUOUS Kelsy sits on her bed with a stuffed animal on her lap and the phone to her ear. She stares at the picture of Victor on the television and frowns. KELSY Of course I'm over him. I barely knew the guy. Plenty of men out there. CHRISSY (V.O.) Great. Then you'll come out? Mega party here Saturday night. KELSY (groans) One more dress and Carson will kill me. CHRISSY (V.O.) Don't worry. I have tons of evening gowns. KELSY I'm sure I have something in my closet. CHRISSY (V.O.) Great. I'll tell everyone you're coming. INT. SHETFIELD ESTATE/CHRISSY'S BEDROOM -- CONTINUOUS Chrissy springs up on her bed with an enthusiastic look. She nearly drops the phone. Oh--oh! Willie! him! CHRISSY I have it. My Uncle He's old. You'll love

KELSY (V.O.) Chrissy--really-Gotta go. CHRISSY Bye.

Chrissy hangs up the phone.

INT. HASTING ESTATE/KELSY'S BEDROOM -- CONTINUOUS Kelsy groans and hangs up the phone. She falls back in bed and clings to her stuffed animal. There's a faint knock on the doorframe. Kelsy looks to the open doorway. Carson enters and sits on the bed alongside her. CARSON What did you talk me into this time? KELSY A weekend at Chrissy's. Carson groans and falls back on the bed with her. place they arms over their eyes. CARSON I can't do an entire weekend with that little trollop Tess. KELSY I still want to kill Burton. CARSON There's a switch. Isn't that usually my line? Kelsy sits up and punches her stuffed animal with bitterness. Carson sits up as well and watches her. KELSY Damn it! He makes me so angry! I know he had our house searched. CARSON We can't prove that. KELSY I just can't believe Victor's a killer. (sulks) I liked him better as the forbidden, married man. At least I could dream about him. Carson places his arm around her and holds her to his side. CARSON Look at the bright side--he's probably not married. Kelsy glares at him. She begins hitting him with the stuffed animal. He laughs and defends himself. Both

INT. SHETIELD ESTATE/DAVIS' BEDROOM Nell lay against a mound of pillows and reads a romance novel. Davis sits at a small desk and scribbles something on a tablet. DAVIS With all our guests this weekend, can we try to avoid your brother? Father's veins are bulging as it is. NELL (English accent) Everyone else is having family over. My brother is certainly welcome. He's my only family. DAVIS Wouldn't matter if he wasn't welcomed, he's always over anyway. I swear he must live out in the garage or something. If Chrissy wasn't so damned fond of him-NELL (angry) I'm fond of him. When he's here, it's the only time I'm treated like a thinking person. Davis spins on his chair to face her. DAVIS Anytime you want to leave, you go right ahead. Nell returns to her book and appears to sulk. NELL I won't have my brother looking after me. He does enough already. DAVIS He's rude and obnoxious--a rotten gambler too. I'm surprised he has enough money to afford that home of his. NELL You two should get along smashingly then. Davis stands with a look of annoyance.

DAVIS You can sleep alone tonight. NELL Good. I didn't want you're sweaty body against me anyway. Davis storms from the room. INT. HALLWAY -- CONTINUOUS Davis hurries down the hall and nearly collides with the heavily swaying Kitty in her lounging gown. She holds a glass of scotch in her hand and frowns at Davis. KITTY Trouble with the old girl? DAVIS Drinking for a change, Pussycat? KITTY I call it coping. DAVIS Where's the old man? KITTY Where else--downstairs on his thrown, thinking of new ways to control people. Davis eyes her and smiles cheaply. DAVIS What do you say to a quick fling in the king's master chamber? KITTY Fuck off you little pervert. Davis shoves her. She strikes the wall and stares at him with surprise. Tess appears from her room and eyes both. TESS What happened? DAVIS Kitty's having trouble walking again. Kitty glares at Davis. Tess hurries to Kitty's side and helps her along the hall.

TESS It's okay, Kitty. I'll help you to your room. Kitty hugs Tess. KITTY You're too good to me, Tess. Davis turns and walks toward the stairs. We hear the sound of glass shattering. Stanley dives from the bedroom. A pillow flies out after him. Jenny stands in the doorway with a wild look in her eyes and slams the door. Davis chuckles lowly. DAVIS Guess the honeymoon's over. That happens a lot around here. At least it explains why none of us have children. Stanley snatches his pillow from the hall floor. STANLEY It's living under this roof that does it. Back two days, and she's suddenly upset with me. DAVIS Plenty of maids to go around. Stanley glares at him with disgust. Davis laughs.

DAVIS Come on--I'll buy you a drink. STANLEY Is that the family solution? No, thanks. We're leaving here just as soon as I get my degree. And work? DAVIS That's a laugh.

STANLEY There's nothing wrong with working. You should try it sometimes. Stanley walks away. Davis continues to laugh.

EXT. SHETFIELD ESTATE -- DAY Kelsy and Carson get out of their car and look at the impressive estate. Two butlers hurry out to take their bags, nearly startling them. They look at one another and sigh.

CARSON Another weekend of gnashing my teeth. They approach the house. Kelsy links onto his arm.

KELSY I suddenly remembered why I never visit with Chrissy. CARSON Why's that? KELSY I prefer to wipe my own ass. An older butler, JEFFERSON, waits by the door to usher them inside. Carson makes a face and groans. CARSON Just don't mention we haven't had a maid in five years-They enter the foyer. INT. GRAND HALLWAY -- CONTINUOUS Kelsy and Carson appear in the foyer. Jefferson shuts the door behind them. Chrissy hurries to greet Kelsy and Carson. She hugs each. CHRISSY I'm so glad you decided to come. She guides them down the hall and waves off Jefferson. CHRISSY I'll show you to your rooms just as soon as I introduce you to the family. I doubt you saw much of them last week at the wedding. Jenny and Stanley are back. They had their first lover's spat last night. Oh, and Sir Vonne Winsor's here. You'll get to finally meet him. He's having a chat with Daddy right now. Maybe he's asking for my hand? CARSON Who's Sir Vonne Winsor? We hear raised male voices coming from the study.

BURTON (O.S.) You're so full of shit, Vonne. I'm sick of discussing it with you! VONNE (O.S.) (English accent) That's because you know I'm right, but you're too bloody thick to realize it. Kelsy smiles and laughs softly. Hmm. KELSY Sounds charming.

CHRISSY I love a feisty Brit. But he's far too young for you. KELSY (mutters) I prefer the older, killer type. Chrissy laughs. They enter the lounge.

INT. LOUNGE -- CONTINUOUS Half of the resident family is assembled within the lounge. There's Kitty, who's drinking, Tess, Nell, and Davis. Tess hurries for Carson and hugs him. TESS Carson--I'm so glad you could make it. Tess quickly takes his hand and pulls on him. TESS I want to show you my room. Daddy just had it remodeled. Carson pulls back, nearly knocking her over. uneasy. CARSON That's quite all right. Colten enters the room and glares at Tess and Carson holding hands. Both quickly pull apart. Carson leans to Kelsy. CARSON Ah, her virgin alarm just sounded. He appears

INT. HALLWAY Kelsy and Chrissy enter the hallway from the lounge. appear in good spirits. CHRISSY Kitty's going to chew on Carson's ear awhile. I have to show you the basement. There's an entire entertainment center down there. Daddy said it's mine this weekend. You, Carson, and I can hide out down there. KELSY Don't you get tired of getting permission from your father all of the time? CHRISSY I don't tell him everything. Kelsy frowns. KELSY Not exactly what I meant. The study door opens. Burton storms out. Both

BURTON Not another word from you! Just don't speak to me, you pompous British twit! Vonne enters the hallway just behind Burton. He appears amused. Vonne is a very attractive, clean-cut, well-dressed man in his mid-thirties. VONNE Resorting to name calling? Burton nearly collides with Kelsy. smile at her. He quickly attempts a

BURTON Oh, Kelsy. I'm glad you could come. I'd really like to straighten out a few things. But first--I need a drink. Burton hurries across the hall to the lounge. Chrissy runs back to the handsome Vonne and clings to his arm. CHRISSY Kelsy, this is Sir Vonne Winsor.

Kelsy approaches Vonne with a polite smile. At closer look, we realize Vonne is Victor without the beard and gray hair. Kelsy's smile drops. Vonne fidgets and deepens his English accent. VONNE It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss-CHRISSY (chirps) Kelsy--Kelsy Hasting. Vonne uncertainly extends his hand while studying the look on her face. VONNE Miss Hasting. Christine speaks very highly of you. Kelsy makes a weak attempt to shake his hand and quickly pulls back. She looks at Chrissy and smiles. KELSY You really know how to pick them, Chrissy. Chrissy clings to his arm. CHRISSY He's absolutely adorable, don't you think? Kelsy smirks while glaring at Vonne. KELSY Yes-(to Chrissy) If you'll excuse me--I just remembered I needed to make a phone call. Kelsy turns and walks down the hall. smile. Vonne attempts a

VONNE I must've left my pen in your father's study. Why don't you join the others, and I'll be along shortly. Kelsy approaches the hall phone as Chrissy disappears into the lounge. Vonne hurries after her, grabs her arm, and pulls her into the nearby library. Kelsy lets out a startled yelp.

INT. LIBRARY -- CONTINUOUS Kelsy violently pulls her arm from Vonne's grip. He releases her and shuts the door behind him. Kelsy spins to face him with a look of mayhem. KELSY (icy) You have two seconds to open that door before I scream. VONNE Please, just let me explain. KELSY Keep your distance! Vonne places his hands in the air and takes a step back. Understood. VONNE Just hear me out.

KELSY You have two minutes. Vonne looks at his watch then back to her. VONNE I know what you're thinking, but I didn't kill that bodyguard. I never even saw him that night. I admit, I was in Burton's suite during the dinner hour, but I didn't see anyone and I certainly didn't kill anyone. KELSY (smirks) Oh--so you're just a jewel thief and a con artist. That's much better. Naturally, I should trust you. Vonne bolts toward her and grabs her arms. VONNE You have to believe me. If they find out I was Victor, I'm as good as convicted of murder. If Burton finds out I stole from him, I'm a dead man. Kelsy pulls away from him and glares.

KELSY We all have our little problems, don't we? Perhaps you should have given more thought to your career choice. VONNE I can explain it all later. Please, promise you won't do anything rash until then. Kelsy studies him a moment. She frowns and rolls her eyes.

KELSY Give me one, good reason-VONNE I did send you flowers. KELSY Charming only works when you're over fifty. VONNE I wasn't over fifty last Saturday. KELSY Don't remind me--you lying sack of shit. VONNE Okay--how about begging? Vonne points down to the floor and smiles. VONNE I'll even get down on my knees. Kelsy stares at him without emotion. and sinks to his knees. VONNE Please, please--don't tell anyone-KELSY (groans) Get up, you idiot. Vonne springs to his feet and pulls her into his arms for a grateful hug. VONNE I knew you wouldn't let me down. Kelsy pushes him away. Vonne takes her hand

KELSY (firm) Don't touch me. I won't say anything, but you just stay the hell away from me. Vonne holds her hand and suavely bows. VONNE As you wish. I'll explain everything tonight. He opens the door for her and romantically gestures her from the room. INT. DINING ROOM Kelsy barely touches her food. She keeps her eyes to the table and sips her wine. Vonne appears lively and in good spirits. VONNE The problem still remains. Buying people isn't a solution. Burton slams his glass down with agitation. BURTON I'm not buying anyone. with you and that? What's

VONNE It is so buying people--money in exchange for a belief or an opinion is considered selling out. CHRISSY Oh, Daddy, just admit he's right. We'll never hear the end of it. BURTON I will never agree with this man. He's wrong. Chrissy looks to Kelsy. CHRISSY Didn't like the pheasant? KELSY I'm not very hungry.

CARSON She's still mourning over Victor. Vonne glares across the table. Kelsy attempts a smile. Carson suddenly jumps and cries out in pain. It's evident she has kicked him under the table. BURTON Another subject I'd rather not discuss. Vonne becomes uncomfortable and pokes at his food. sips her wine and leans back in her chair. KELSY The man used me. Deception and lies are things I despise most about men. I hardly think I'm mourning over the bastard. Both Burton and Vonne drink their wine while appearing uncomfortable. Neither speaks. INT. GAME ROOM Everyone gathers in the large basement game room for drinks, pool, and music. Paul and Haddon are also among those invited. Colten remains near the stairs like a prison guard. Tess follows Carson around the pool table while he plays a game of pool with Stanley, Paul, and Haddon. Kitty remains drunk by the bar. Davis and Nell argue toward the back of the room. Burton and Vonne argue by the bar about politics. Kitty manages to get a few drunken words in. Chrissy and Jenny hang out with Kelsy near the old fashioned juke box. CHRISSY Well? what do you think of Sir Vonne Winsor? KELSY He's rather bold for an Englishman. CHRISSY He does get a little fiery from time to time. Isn't he dashingly handsome? Kelsy casts a glare at Vonne from across the room. KELSY For a younger man--I suppose. Kelsy

JENNY If Daddy hears you talking about Vonne like that, he'll cut off your allowance. He's never going to allow you to marry him. He can't stand the man. And Vonne's always on him--always trying to offend him. CHRISSY Daddy didn't care for Stanley either. JENNY At least Stanley respects Daddy and backs off. CHRISSY Surrenders is more like it. Chrissy appears dreamy. CHRISSY Vonne is emotionally strong. And he defends Nell--even when she's in the wrong. That's the man for me. Davis and Nell nearly start shouting. Nell walks away from Davis and joins Vonne and Burton at the bar. Nell indicates the bottle to Kitty while holding her empty glass. Kitty is about to pour when Vonne casually stops her from giving Nell another drink. Nell glares at him, says something harsh, and pours herself a drink. Vonne stands and walks away. Kelsy watches him casually approach Davis, say something quietly to him, and then approach the three women. Davis appears annoyed with a hateful look. Kelsy looks away before Vonne can see her staring. VONNE Good evening, Ladies. JENNY You're really stirring it up tonight, Mr. Winsor. VONNE I've known you two years, Jenny. I'd think you'd get past the formalities by now. Are you ever going to call me by my first name? JENNY I reserve first name basis for people I actually like.

VONNE Oh, I see. In that case, it's Sir Winsor. Try not to forget it. Jenny appears disgusted and walks away. Kelsy and Chrissy watch her join her husband near the pool table. CHRISSY Chased another one away, Vonne. You're not very popular tonight. VONNE It's not a popularity contest. I still have it where it counts. Chrissy and Vonne laugh. Kelsy sips her drink and shows her disinterest. Chrissy clings to Vonne's arm. CHRISSY So, when are you going to invite me over to your house? I still haven't seen the inside. VONNE When you don't have Colten following you about. I know his orders are shoot to kill where I'm concerned. CHRISSY You're staying tonight, aren't you? VONNE That depends on whether or not your father intends to throw me out. CHRISSY I know you don't live far, but given the late hour and your love for fine brandy-Vonne pats her hand and smiles. VONNE No need to worry about me. know my limit. Tess nearly has Carson in a corner now. watches her younger sister. CHRISSY Excuse me a moment. I Chrissy frowns and

Chrissy hurries across the room toward Tess. Kelsy avoids looking at Vonne. He studies her and plays with his drink. VONNE Can't you even look at me? KELSY No. VONNE What will it take to make you happy? Should I turn myself over to the police? Tell Burton? Allow Colten to put a bullet through my head? What? Kelsy turns to face him and looks him in the eyes. KELSY You used me. Because of you, I have private detectives following me around, and Burton's men ransacked my home. They think I'm in on it. VONNE I didn't mean for any of that to happen. I'm sorry. KELSY Sorry doesn't cut it. I don't know what your game is with Chrissy, but I want you to end it. She's a nice girl. I won't let you take advantage of her. VONNE You have it all wrong, Kelsy. don't con women out of their money. KELSY No--you only steal from them. Conning requires some degree of feeling, which you have none. VONNE Ouch--that hurt. Get what you give, Sir Winsor. Kelsy walks toward the pool table and approaches Carson. Carson appears relieved to see her. He hugs her with a warm smile. KELSY I'm going to bed. I

CARSON So early? KELSY It's after midnight. Carson looks at his watch with some surprise then attempts a slightly drunken smile. CARSON So it is. Chrissy took Tess up to bed, so I think I'll stay up awhile longer. KELSY Don't drink too much. You know how annoying you are when you're hung over. CARSON Stanley, Paul, and Haddon are actually fun guys. I'm having a far better time then I'd anticipated. Well, with the exception of the little tart. KELSY I'm glad you're enjoying yourself. I'll check on you in the morning--make sure you haven't passed out someplace. Carson dramatically hugs her. CARSON You're always looking out for my image. You're such a wonderful sister. Have I told you how much I appreciate you? Kelsy pulls away from him and playfully swats him. KELSY Don't start. I hate when you drink. You're like a little love bug. CARSON I'll tell you--that Nell is very attractive. I love a woman with an accent. (eyes Kelsy) Who'd kill me first? Her husband or her brother?

KELSY You're a handful. Behave tonight. We may be leaving in the morning. CARSON Why? KELSY I'll explain it later. INT. FIRST FLOOR HALLWAY -- EARLY MORNING Three in the morning. The hall is dimly lit. Kelsy walks along the hallway in her nightshirt and shorts. She looks in several rooms as she passes. KELSY (soft) Carson? She continues along the hallway. We hear a clunk from the kitchen. Kelsy approaches the kitchen door. She slowly pushes it open. INT. KITCHEN -- CONTINUOUS Kelsy slowly opens the kitchen door. We see Davis in a compromising position with one of the maids over the kitchen table. Both moan softly. Neither notices her. Kelsy quickly backs out of the room. INT. GAME ROOM Kelsy appears near the bottom of the steps. We hear Burton and Vonne still debating from the bar area. Kelsy glances toward the bar. Burton is loud and unruly in his drunken state. Surprisingly, Colten isn't around. We see Carson sprawled over the bar, out cold. Vonne remains behind the bar. VONNE You're controlling and manipulative-Vonne looks to Carson with his head on the bar. VONNE See, even Carson agrees with me. BURTON And you're a bastard. You can't just let kids today run willy nilly. They need structure.

VONNE You keep them under your control by withholding self respect and their trust funds. My God, they're old enough to take responsibility for themselves. BURTON Their trust funds are mine to withhold. You don't see them running out to earn a living. VONNE Because you'd disown them. You've made them depend upon you--made them weak. Vonne once more looks to Carson. VONNE Am I right, Carson? Vonne looks back to Burton. VONNE Carson agrees with me. BURTON Carson--the poorest rich man I know. His father was a poor business man, and he's no better. Kelsy appears riled and approaches Burton from behind. KELSY As long as we're pointing finger, why don't we discuss your involvement in my father's poor investments, Mr. Shetfield. Burton turns on his bar stool and smiles cheerfully at Kelsy. BURTON Oh, Kelsy--what are you doing in the snake pit at this hour. Kelsy approaches him and Carson on the bar. continues to smile in his drunken state. Burton

KELSY You're a corrupt, unscrupulous man. You nearly put my father in the poor house by swindling him out of his money. I despise you. You're nothing but a loathsome parasite! BURTON You know, I've always found you quite attractive, Kelsy. How about you and me get together in the hot tub? Kelsy appears momentarily surprised. hostility return quickly. KELSY Fuck off. Burton continues to smile. His eyes roll shut and he falls to the floor. Both Kelsy and Vonne look to Burton as he lay passed out of the floor near his stool. VONNE Certainly floored him with that one. Kelsy glares at Vonne. KELSY You're no better. Vonne smiles innocently. VONNE You think I'm a parasite? KELSY Among other things. KELSY I'd rather not discuss it right now--it's late. (to Carson) Carson--time for bed. Carson mutters into the bar. Leave him. is. Kelsy glares at him. her evil glare. VONNE He's fine where he's Vonne appears startled then humored by Her hatred and

KELSY You're not the one who'll spend an hour massaging his sore back tomorrow. VONNE No, I doubt I'd care for that. Kelsy pinches Carson on the arm. He cries out and jerks awake. His eyes are barely open. CARSON What? Huh? Kelsy helps him from his barstool. He nearly stumbles over the snoring Burton. Kelsy places Carson's arm over her shoulder and attempts to move him toward the stairs. Vonne approaches her. VONNE I'll help you get him to the couch. You'll never get him up all those stairs. Vonne helps Kelsy walk Carson to the couch and lie him down. Kelsy removes a throw cover from the sofa and places it over him. KELSY What's with you men and your pissing contests? Kelsy turns and heads up the stairs. her. VONNE I'm not drunk. KELSY Of course not. You probably have a few safes to crack tonight. VONNE Someone got up on the wrong side of the bed-INT. FIRST FLOOR HALLWAY -- CONTINUOUS Vonne attempts to keep up with Kelsy as she walks toward the main staircase. VONNE We really need to talk about this. Vonne follows after

KELSY There's nothing to talk about. Kelsy spins to face him with an evil and unpredictable look in her eyes. KELSY As unbelievable as it sounds, I have no intention on telling anyone about your little hobby. I find it difficult to believe you killed Bosley--that's the only reason I don't intend to say anything. I have little love for Burton Shetfield as well. That being said, I'd prefer to just not discuss it further. VONNE I'm all for that. It'll never come up again. What do you say to breakfast? I make a terrific omelet--since we're both already up. KELSY You aren't listening. I'm not excusing what you've done. I don't want any part of knowing you. VONNE (frowns) That's a pretty serious comment. KELSY Not nearly as serious as "Officer--there's you man". VONNE You don't really mean that, do you? I'm not a bad man-(smirks) I'm not even married. Kelsy takes a step closer and stares into his eyes. KELSY No--you're a thief and a liar. Vonne suddenly pulls her into his arms. startled. Kelsy appears

VONNE My motive is far less devious then you'd like to believe. Give me a chance. Kelsy braces her hands against his chest to maintain distance between them. KELSY I liked you better when I thought you were married. Vonne smiles warmly and gently caresses her face. VONNE I'll admit, I deceived you with my appearance and my accent. So slap me, get it out of your system, and let me make it up to you. KELSY My brother and I are near bankrupt, and I don't put out. I have absolutely nothing you would want. Save your charm for someone else. Kelsy pulls away and heads up the stairs. after. INT. GAME ROOM -- EARLY MORNING Jefferson and the maid from Davis's romp, SHELLY, walk down the steps to the game room. JEFFERSON You're putting yourself at great risk, Shelly. If anyone catches you and young Mr. Shetfield-They pause at the bottom of the stairs. peacefully on the sofa. JEFFERSON Clean up quickly and quietly. Jefferson places dirty glasses on his tray near Carson. Shelly hurries toward the bar and places more glasses on her tray. She picks up her tray and approaches the running hot tub for another glass on the edge. We see Burton lying face down in his underwear in the water. The tray of glasses crashes to the floor. Shelly begins to scream hysterically. Carson wakes abruptly, jumps, and falls to the floor. Jefferson hurries to Shelly's side and stares into the hot tub with a look of horror. Carson sleeps Vonne stares

JEFFERSON (firm) Go upstairs and call the police. Shelly is now reduced to hysterical crying. to her. JEFFERSON Go--now! Shelly bolts for the stairs. Carson staggers closer and stares into the hot tub then looks away. INT. LOUNGE -- LATE MORNING Almost everyone sits around the lounge. The men are dressed. Several of the women are in their satin robes. Kelsy is dressed and sits on the arm of Carson's chair. She holds his head to her chest. It's obvious he's hung over and still in last nights clothing. Jenny, Tess, and Kitty are all absent. Chrissy clings to Davis as tears streak her face. Detective Frank enters the room. We see the black body bag being wheeled out in the hall beyond the open doors. FRANK I'm not a medical examiner, but it would appear Mr. Shetfield drown, which makes sense, since he'd had too much to drink--as verified from Miss Hasting and Sir Winsor. In light of Mr. Bosley's death last week, there will be a thorough exam, but, at present, I'm ruling it an accidental drowning. I'd like everyone to remain here another day until we verify the actual cause of death. Davis quickly stands and approaches. Certainly. Frank. DAVIS Thank you, Detective Jefferson turns

FRANK My condolences to the family. Jefferson sees Detective Frank from the lounge. Vonne confronts Nell and talks quietly to her. She shakes her head. He smiles gently and gives her a gentle hug then releases her. He looks to Davis. VONNE Davis, is there anything I can do to help?

Uh, no, Vonne.

DAVIS Thanks.

VONNE Then I'll stop by later. (to Nell) I'll be at home if you need me. Nell nods. Vonne leaves the lounge. Kelsy's eyes follow him. She then looks to the grieving Chrissy. EXT. GARDEN -- DAY Kelsy and Carson walk through the extensive garden and take in its tranquil beauty. KELSY Maybe we should just go. If Detective Frank needs us, he can call us. It's so--depressing around here. I feel like I'm intruding on the grieving family. CARSON Grieving, right. You can't tell me they're not all secretly happy, well, except maybe for Tess. She's still young. KELSY Do you really believe they're that unfeeling? I hated Burton, but I certainly didn't want to see him dead. They're his family. CARSON You won't find me mourning his death. I say it serves him right, and all those ungrateful, spoiled children will finally have their freedom from him and a load of money to boot. You can't tell me they're too broken up. KELSY You're heartless, Carson. CARSON I'm realistic. If that makes me heartless, then so be it. They enter a clearing. stares at them. Nell sits on a marble bench and

NELL I couldn't help overhearing what you'd just said. Carson appears embarrassed. and sits on the bench. Kelsy quickly approaches her

KELSY I'm sorry, Nell. Carson is a bit callus at times. NELL He's completely right. I'm not the least bit upset by Burton's death. The man kept his children at his mercy. He liked control. In a way, he even controlled me--using Vonne as a weapon. If I didn't keep quiet, he'd keep me from seeing my brother. Vonne was the only person he couldn't control. He was a bit of an equalizer. Completely forbid Chrissy from going out with him. Now, everyone's free. It should be humorous to see what happens next. CARSON What do you mean? NELL None of them have a clue how to survive on their own. I don't know how they'll do it. Nell stands. NELL Do you guys have a car? I'd really like to get out of here for awhile. I feel like my cell doors have been opened. I have a need to run free. CARSON I have a car. I'd be happy to take you for a drive along the coast. I'd like to get away for awhile myself. NELL I'd love that. They won't even notice I'm gone if you pick me up by the west gate.

CARSON In ten minutes? (to Kelsy) You coming, Sis? Okay. KELSY I'll stay here for damage control--make sure you aren't ambushed on your way back. Carson smirks the garden to Kelsy remains flowers. She thought. INT. STUDY Stanley walks past the study, stops, and enters. We see Davis sitting behind the desk. Stanley eyes Davis, who doesn't look up. Hey, Davis. STANLEY What are you doing? and chuckles softly. Nell continues through the back gate and Carson heads for the house. on the marble bench and stares at the blooming appears depressed and possibly deep in

Davis doesn't bother to look up. DAVIS Going through my father's business papers--his last wishes, that sort of thing. Jenny's apposed to cremation, but I know those were his wishes. Davis finally looks up. DAVIS What's happening? Anything? STANLEY No, nothing yet. Looks a bit like a will you're reading. DAVIS That's where he put his burial wishes--or so I'd thought. STANLEY Uh, I see. Anything interesting? DAVIS Plenty--but we'll wait for father's attorney to reveal the details.

STANLEY His body isn't even cold and you're already counting your money. Real pathetic, Davis. DAVIS No, Stanley--pathetic is listening to other people all your life. Stanley ignores him and leaves the study. the doorway. COLTEN You wanted to speak to me, Davis? Davis smiles and motions him in. DAVIS Close the door. We need to discuss your position here. Colten eyes him with a strange look. INT. KITTY'S BEDROOM Kitty stands before the mirror and holds a black dress before her. Tess lay on the bed and watches her hold up different black dresses. TESS What happens now that daddy's gone? Will you be staying with us? Kitty glances at her through the mirror. KITTY Which do you like better? TESS The one with the mesh sleeves. KITTY Me too. KITTY According to your father's will, the house remains in everyone's name until the youngest child, you, turns twenty-one. Then the others can buy it out from the other children or agree to all stay here. So you're stuck with me another five years. Colten pauses in

TESS I'm glad, Kitty. I was afraid you might leave. KITTY I don't have a reason to at the moment. Besides, someone needs to look after you. TESS Can I learn to drive? KITTY You certainly may. Tess smiles happily. INT. LOUNGE -- EVENING We see Kelsy sitting alone in the lounge. Kelsy looks at the clock and groans. It's six in the evening. She continues to pace. Davis peaks into the lounge. DAVIS Have you seen Nell? No, I haven't. with Vonne. KITTY Maybe she's out

DAVIS If she is, he's not saying. Davis continues on his way. from the lounge. INT. HALLWAY -- CONTINUOUS Kelsy nearly collides with Jefferson on his way to get the door. Kelsy appears embarrassed and takes a step back. Jefferson opens the door. Vonne charges into the house. Detective Frank is right behind him. Vonne spins to face him. VONNE I resent the accusation, Detective. FRANK You're certainly defensive for someone who has nothing to hide. VONNE Burton was very much alive when I left the game room--Miss Hasting left with me. The doorbell rings. Kelsy runs

KELSY What's going on? FRANK The coroner's report indicates high amounts of sedatives in Burton's system. It's unlikely he undressed himself and got into the hot tub--in fact, he very well may have been in a coma before that. VONNE And Detective Frank thinks I slipped them to him. FRANK I was merely pointing out you had opportunity and some motive. VONNE Oh, now I have motive too? What motive? He didn't agree on my political views, so I killed him? Burton has nothing I want. He was a prick but not enough to make me kill him. And in front of a potential witness? Carson was unconscious on the sofa. He could have woken. Not exactly an ideal situation for murder. FRANK Perhaps Carson was sedated as well. Kelsy watches both men with a look of surprise and horror. KELSY Whoa--slow down here. (to Frank) Burton was murdered? I think there's something you need to know, Detective. Vonne quickly eyes Kelsy. KELSY Burton was very much alive at three in the morning. Jefferson found him dead at five. FRANK I know all of this.

KELSY There's no way Vonne could have killed Burton. He was with me. Vonne hides his surprise. Detective Frank glares at Vonne. Vonne appears completely calm and places his hands casually in his pockets. FRANK You told me you were alone. VONNE Burton's daughter would be very upset if she knew I had taken an interest in Kelsy. Frank looks to Kelsy. FRANK And you swear he never left the room? KELSY Yes, I swear. We were just talking--get your mind from the gutter. FRANK I hope you're not lying to me, Miss Hasting. I'll have you arrested for interfering with a murder investigation. Kelsy doesn't back down. Jefferson. Detective Frank looks to

FRANK I'd like to speak to the others. Please gather them in the lounge. I'll see them one at a time in the study. Detective Frank glares at Vonne then continues through to the study. Jefferson eyes both. He then hurries up the stairs. Vonne groans and sinks against the wall. He looks at her and shakes his head. VONNE You lied to a detective. KELSY Just exaggerated the truth. VONNE How was being with me in your room exaggerating the truth?

KELSY Realistically, if you had slipped sedatives into Burton's drink and planned on drowning him, you certainly wouldn't have offered to make me breakfast. I'd think you'd have more pressing matters to tend too. That and your room is next to mine, and I heard you tossing and turning the remainder of the night. VONNE Sketchy at best. KELSY Not enough to give you an alibi, but I know you didn't leave your room. I needed to tell him something he would believe. Vonne smiles and laughs softly. Kelsy backs away from him. He takes a step toward her.

KELSY Wipe that smile from your face. It doesn't change my opinion of you in the least. VONNE Now who's the liar? Vonne moves toward her. Kelsy continues to back away from him and toward the steps. KELSY I resent that. VONNE Drop the morality act, Kelsy. Jewel thief or not, you still want me. You wanted to make me suffer a little because of the other night--and I can accept that. But play time is over. We hear a car pull into the driveway. Kelsy ducks past Vonne and hurries toward the foyer. Vonne catches her hand and pulls her back into his arms gracefully. We hear a strange thump against the door. Kelsy attempts to pull away from him. KELSY I'm not playing.

VONNE You can't deny you wanted me to make a move on you in the garden. Why else would you have agreed to go for a walk? I know you had feelings for me then, and you still do now. KELSY Fine. I have feelings for you, but I have no intentions on acting upon them. VONNE Why not? Kelsy easily pulls away. KELSY You're a thief. Not to mention what you're doing to Chrissy. I won't be a part to that. And I'm going to tell Chrissy what sort of con man you are. Kelsy hurries to the door. Vonne follows her more slowly. She opens the door. We see Carson and Nell kissing passionately in the doorway. We hear someone coming down the stairs. Kelsy slams the door and casts herself against it with a frown. KELSY Then there's my brother with very bad timing-Chrissy comes down the stairs. She sees Vonne. Her eyes lit up. She hurries toward him and throws her arms around his neck, surprising him. Chrissy suddenly kisses him on the lips. Vonne pulls away and attempts a smile. VONNE Where did that come from? CHRISSY I'm just happy to see you. Vonne appears confused. There's a knock on the door. Kelsy opens the door, allowing Carson and Nell to enter. Chrissy eyes Nell. CHRISSY Davis has been looking for you. Nell walks proudly toward the stairs. NELL I'll bet he has.

They all watch her walk up the stairs. Kelsy quickly dabs the lipstick from Carson's face before Chrissy can turn back around. Both appear innocent. CHRISSY She's in a mood. VONNE I'd better talk to her. Vonne attempts to pull away. hand. Chrissy doesn't release his

CHRISSY I was thinking--perhaps we could have dinner at your place tonight. Detective Frank appears in the study doorway. FRANK Miss Shetfield-Chrissy quickly kisses Vonne on the lips and smiles. CHRISSY I'll be right back. Chrissy hurries toward Detective Frank. They enter the study. Vonne's smile fades. Kelsy glides past him and eyes him slyly. KELSY Looks like your dance card is already full. Carson quickly hurries past Vonne. Vonne suddenly catches his arm and pulls him back to meet his gaze. VONNE (firm) I saw that-Vonne releases Carson's arm. INT. GAME ROOM Kelsy stands in the game room and watches the police photographer take several pictures. KELSY A little late for that. The staff cleaned the entire room. Carson hurries down the stairs behind Kelsy. Carson hurries after Kelsy.

OFFICER Its procedure. CARSON What's going on? KELSY Burton's death was ruled a murder. They're saying he was sedated then drowned. Someone must've slipped drugs into his drink when he wasn't looking. CARSON That's impossible. He poured his own drinks. He was almost anal about it. It was almost as if he didn't trust anyone else. The officer looks back at him. OFFICER Did you notice anyone unusually close about an hour before he'd passed out? CARSON I'm not sure. I don't know what time I'd passed out. KELSY You were out at three. CARSON I was awake at two. That's when Burton brought out his personal stock. Kelsy and the officer stare at him. OFFICER Did you have any of that? CARSON Just a glass or two. strong stuff. Very

OFFICER Do you know where he kept the bottle? Carson approaches the bar, goes behind it, and looks around. CARSON No, the bottle's not here.

KELSY The bottle on the bar was half full. He certainly didn't finish it. OFFICER Who cleaned up this morning? CARSON Jefferson and Shelly. Later. Jefferson stands near the bar. note pad. The officer holds a

JEFFERSON I'm positive. There wasn't a bottle on the bar. Mr. Shetfield only drank his good stock late in a party. At five hundred dollars a bottle, he wasn't about to share. It's his private stock. He usually keeps a bottle to the back. OFFICER Do you recycle? JEFFERSON All glass bottles would be out in the bin in the pantry. INT. STUDY Detective Frank sits behind the desk while Kitty sits before him. She looks stunning in her short, black dress. She's sober for the first time. There's a knock on the door. FRANK Come in. The door opens. plastic bag. The young officer enters with a bottle in a

OFFICER Detective Frank, we found the bottle Burton had been drinking from last night. It was half full last night, but now it's empty. Mr. Hasting drank from it as well before he'd passed out. There appears to be sediments on the bottom. Detective Frank stands.

FRANK Well done, Stiller. We'll need to search the house for Xanax-the sedative found in Shetfield's system. Kitty appears horrified. KITTY Xanax? INT. FIRST FLOOR HALLWAY Detective Frank eyes the bottle of pills in the baggy. Kitty is handcuffed in the hallway. KITTY I didn't kill him! I swear I didn't do it! FRANK Your pills were refilled last week. This bottle is nearly empty. That's several pills unaccounted for. Everyone watches as they take her from the house. Tess bursts out crying and runs up the stairs. Jenny runs after her. Detective Frank and the other officers leave with Kitty. Jefferson shuts the door behind them and pauses by the door. DAVIS Well, who would've guessed she'd be sober enough to plot the old man's death. CHRISSY She certainly was crazy enough. STANLEY Anyone could've taken the pills from her room and tampered with the bottle. DAVIS Leave it to the outsider to stick up for the sixth wife. Wouldn't be the first time one of father's wives decided to kill him. STANLEY Maybe that should tell you something.

Colten takes a step toward Stanley. Colten then back to Davis.

Stanley glares at

STANLEY Do you have him on remote control or is his control setting turned to attack mode? DAVIS Colten is here to keep order in this house. My father will be respected and all his rules apply until the reading of the will. You'll get your money and you can move on. If you stay here--there will be rules. Davis turns and heads for the study. and follows him. Colten casually turns

STANLEY I say we escape while we still can. Nell looks to Vonne. Her look is concerned. He motions her upstairs with his eyes. Nell turns and hurries up the stairs. Chrissy takes Vonne's arm and smiles sweetly. CHRISSY I could use a drink. Want to join me? Vonne eyes Chrissy, attempts a smile, and allows her to lead him to the game room. INT. GAME ROOM Kelsy casually enters the game room. We see Vonne and Chrissy near the bar. Chrissy stares at Vonne with a horrified look. VONNE I'm sorry, Chrissy. Although I've enjoyed our friendship, I don't intend to take it to the next level. CHRISSY But you said we could go out if I could get rid of Colten. VONNE And we can. Just not in the way you want. I don't have romantic feelings for you.

CHRISSY (bitter) Oh, I see. So you used me to get Daddy to let you in the house. VONNE The man was keeping me from seeing my sister. It helped having someone on my side. You're not completely innocent in this, Chrissy. You used me to verbally assault your father. The only reason you wanted me around was so I could offend your father. So we used one another. At least we became friends. CHRISSY (angry) Screw friendship! You're moving Nell out, aren't you? Daddy's dead--now she'll get half of Davis's share. Chrissy suddenly slaps him. he deserved it. Vonne endures it as if he knows

CHRISSY Well, screw you! Chrissy turns and hurries for the stairs and nearly runs over Kelsy. Vonne slowly sits on the bar stool and looks at Kelsy. She slowly approaches. VONNE Here to add insult to injury? know I deserved it, you don't have to tell me. I

Kelsy pauses directly before him with a tiny smile on her face. KELSY Payback sucks. Kelsy gently touches his slightly red cheek then kisses it. Vonne stares at her with some surprise. A tiny smile crosses his face. VONNE Am I forgiven? Kelsy places her arms around his neck and smiles gently.

KELSY We're in for a long discussion first. We can take it from there. Vonne slowly stands and pulls her into his arms. VONNE I promise, I'm not a career thief or a con man. I'll explain everything, if you'll just give me a chance. Kelsy smiles her response. Vonne kisses her gently on the lips. He pulls back a moment to meet her gaze. Both smile. He then kisses her more passionately. CARSON (O.S.) Vonne! Davis is on his way upstairs--and he's pissed! Vonne pulls away from Kelsy with a look of concern. across the room. INT. SECOND FLOOR HALLWAY We hear terrified screams from Nell followed by breaking glass and thumps. Vonne, Kelsy, and Carson run along the hallway toward Nell's room. Stanley and Jenny are shouting at one another in the hallway. Colten stands before the closed bedroom door. Colten sees them approach and stands in their path looking big and tough. COLTEN This is between them. of it. Stay out He runs

We hear Nell scream followed by another crash. Vonne! NELL (O.S.) Help me!

VONNE Get the fuck out of my way, or I'll kill you! CARSON (to Kelsy) Call the police! Colten suddenly lunges for Vonne and tackles him to the hall floor. Carson bolts past them to the room door and begins to pound on it. Kelsy watches Vonne attempt to fight the man on top of him. Vonne takes two shots to the face. Carson begins ramming the door with his shoulder. Kelsy begins kicking Colten in the ribs.

KELSY (furious) Get off of him, you son-of-abitch! On the third kick, Vonne tosses Colten off of him and springs to his feet. Colten grabs Kelsy's ankle and pulls her legs out from under her. She falls backward to the floor. Stanley pushes Jenny away from him. She falls to the floor with a look of surprise. Stanley joins Carson. Both men kick the door. It cracks open with a violent crash. Nell runs from the room. Davis runs out after her. Carson punches him as he exits the room, casting him roughly to the floor from the sudden stop. Carson clutches his hand and jumps around wildly. Colten moves to his feet and reaches inside his jacket. Nell screams. Time seems to stop as the gun is pulled from the shoulder holster. No one seems to move. We hear the distinct sound of a pump shotgun being cocked, ending the slow motion. The gun is exposed from the jacket. Colten suddenly freezes. We see Jefferson holding the shotgun aimed at Colton. JEFFERSON Move and I'll blow your fucking head off! Nell is in Carson's arms while glaring at Davis, who holds his face from where he sits on the floor. Nell appears to have suffered a few hits herself. Carson still holds his hand. Nell looks at it. NELL Oh, my God--your hand. Vonne helps Kelsy to her feet. Colten drops the gun. Kelsy quickly picks it up and hands it to Vonne. Vonne eyes her then the gun with a strange look. He looks back at her as if she'd be insane to hand him a loaded gun. She attempts a nervous smile and sets the gun on the table near her. Vonne moves past her to Nell. Nell hugs him and begins to cry. He comforts her then glares at Davis, where he sits. Davis doesn't say a word. He just looks away. STANLEY Fucking psycho house! of here! I'm out

Stanley walks past them and stops before the now frightened Jenny. He points a finger at her. STANLEY And you can go to hell, you heartless bitch! Jefferson slowly backs away and lowers the shotgun to chest level. Shelly runs up the hallway while breathing heavily.

SHELLY The police are on their way. Davis slowly stands. DAVIS Why the hell did you call the police? This is a private matter! Shelly appears frightened then upset. swollen hand. Kelsy checks Carson's

CARSON Can we leave now? This has been the weekend from hell. KELSY I'll pack our bags. Shelly approaches Carson and takes him by the arm. SHELLY Let's get some ice on that. Vonne leads Nell back into her room. We see the gun is now missing from the table against the wall. EXT. DRIVEWAY -- EVENING We see two police cars with their lights flashing in the driveway. Kelsy tosses her bag into the trunk and slams the lid with a groan. We see Stiller, the police officer, removing the silent Colten and the shouting, angry Davis in handcuffs. DAVIS It's my God damned house! are you arresting me! Why

STILLER Because you like hitting women. It's called assault and battery. There's actually a law against it. Carson stands on the porch while holding his wrapped hand. He watches the police car drive away. He then motions Nell out. He carries one of her bags. Vonne appears with two more. They approach Vonne's car and place the bags in the trunk. Vonne helps Nell into the car then hurries to Kelsy. Carson talks to Nell through the window. VONNE So, we'll see you back at my house after you're through at the hospital?

Kelsy nods. KELSY Is she okay? VONNE A few black and blue marks, but she's fine. I'm not sure what he would've done if we hadn't stopped him. KELSY Let's not think about it. We see Chrissy step onto the porch. Stanley nearly knocks her over while leaving with a bag. Jenny follows after him. She cries hysterically. JENNY Please, Stanley--don't leave me! Kelsy glares at Chrissy on the porch. KELSY Are you proud of yourself? You just couldn't wait to tell him, could you? Was it worth it? Vonne gently prods Kelsy to the driver's side of Carson's car. Kelsy continues to glare at Chrissy. KELSY Have a nice life-Vonne forces her to face him and holds her chin. VONNE Shh--you sound like a lunatic. You're supposed to be the responsible, level-headed one. Get in the car. KELSY Sorry--lost it a minute. That's okay. VONNE I like you fiery.

He kisses her quickly then waves her into the car. He shuts the door for her then walks back to the porch. Chrissy hurries inside. Vonne approaches Jefferson. VONNE Are you sure you won't come along tonight?

JEFFERSON No. Shelly and I will pack in the morning. I'm sure Davis and Colten will be in jail overnight. We'll be fine. VONNE All right. You know where my house is. If you feel like leaving in the middle of the night even--just come on over. JEFFERSON Thank you, Sir Winsor. It wouldn't be easy to find work after pulling a shotgun on one's employer. VONNE (soft laugh) Under the circumstances, I'm willing to overlook that. See you in the morning. Vonne returns to his car. mansion. INT. CARSON'S CAR -- NIGHT It's two in the morning. Kelsy drives while Carson plays with the wrapping on his hand. Stop it. It hurts. KELSY You're lucky it's only sprained. CARSON Can't we just go home? KELSY No. I told Vonne we'd go to his house. Besides, it's closer. I thought you wanted to see Nell? CARSON That was before I found out her husband was a psychopath. I can't believe he hit her like that. He would've killed her, you know. I doubt she'll ever trust another man again. KELSY You'll mess it. CARSON Jefferson returns inside the

KELSY Time heals all--besides, she could use a kind, gentle, patient man like you in her life. CARSON (soft) He would've killed her-KELSY Yes--I know. CARSON I wouldn't doubt he killed Burton. He certainly stepped right into the part. KELSY Kitty seems unlikely as a killer. If I'd been married to that jerk-EXT. SHETFIELD ESTATE -- NIGHT We see a car pull up to the well-lit estate. Chrissy, Davis, and Colten get out of the car. Neither looks very happy. DAVIS I can't believe they took that long to process bail. CHRISSY We should have bailed out Kitty as well. DAVIS For murder? You can take it out of your own money. CHRISSY Stop being such a jerk. They approach the house. DAVIS Wait until I get my hands on Jefferson and Shelly. CHRISSY Just tack on another charge while you're at it. They'll hold you without bail the next time. Keep you overnight.

They enter the house. INT. CARSON'S CAR Carson stares out the side window. Kelsy remains silent while watching the road before them. CARSON So--when were you planning on telling me? KELSY Tell you what? CARSON About Victor-KELSY What do you mean? Carson quickly turns on the seat and partially faces her. CARSON Oh, come on. I've known you before you were that spark in Dad's eyes. You've had an eye for older men even before you could crawl. Now you suddenly expect me to believe you like a man less than ten years your senior? Vonne's Victor. That's the only reason you noticed him. KELSY You're delusional. CARSON I'm not stupid, Kelsy. Just last week you were pouting over Victor, now you're panting over Vonne. KELSY I don't pant. CARSON You do too. You burn candles for months over a charming man you've only know a few hours. Only the genuine article could change your mood. I noticed the similarities, though he fakes a good American accent, and the older gent disguise. Your behavior was the only giveaway.

KELSY Every now and again, I realize you really are my brother. CARSON So why didn't you tell me? KELSY Because I didn't want you to get any ideas about trying to steal those jewels from him. Carson turns straight in his seat and groans. CARSON Not that again. I was only ever half serious about that. If I was going to get back the money he fleeced from Dad, I'd do it my own way. I had a beautiful scam in mind before someone snuffed the bastard. You don't suppose Vonne-KELSY No, I don't. A man who went to such great length to plan the perfect robbery doesn't stop to dance for an entire hour if he's killed someone. CARSON A bit reckless. You could be wrong. KELSY You have a big fat motive and no alibi for both murders. You could have been stealing those jewels to find the safe empty and been seen by Bosley. You were also alone with Burton in the game room. CARSON (surprise) You're accusing me? KELSY No. Just pointing out that you could have done it, but I know you didn't--just as I know Vonne didn't kill anyone. CARSON He had good reason.

KELSY So did everyone else in that house. Where were you so long after dinner at the reception? CARSON (casually) Breaking into Burton's hotel suite. KELSY What? CARSON It seemed like a good idea at the time. But when I got there, the safe was empty. You idiot! KELSY Were you seen?

CARSON Almost. That thug Bosley came into the suite. I hid in the closet. He found the safe empty then left. When I heard him yell in the hallway, I knew he was chasing someone. Later, after they found him dead, I figured it had to be Victor. I couldn't help the investigation by telling them I was there-probably would've gotten myself arrested in the process, so I didn't bother. EXT. VONNE'S ESTATE -- NIGHT We see Carson's car pull up to the elegant estate. INT. CARSON'S CAR Kelsy parks the car and turns to face Carson with a serious look on her face. KELSY Promise me you'll never do anything so stupid again. CARSON No need--Burton's dead. There wouldn't be any satisfaction left to stealing. But what about sticky fingers Vonne? He stole the jewels, right? How can you still want to associate with him?

KELSY I thought about that while you were in x-ray. I think he did it for his sister. Chrissy had mentioned Davis was big into gambling. I'd heard Nell had money going into the marriage, but they depended upon an allowance by Burton. I think Davis lost all of her money, and Vonne wanted to get it back. Maybe Burton even took it in the same manner he had with our father's money. Vonne said it was an isolated case. I believe him. CARSON Well, we'll see. But I still think we should have gone home. I'm going to be killed tonight, I just know it. KELSY Vonne didn't kill Burton. CARSON That doesn't mean he won't kill me for liking his sister. Kelsy groans and gets out of the car. INT. VONNES ESTATE/FOYER Carson and Kelsy enter the foyer of Vonne's mansion. Kelsy looks around as Nell shuts and locks the door. They turn to face her. KELSY Where's Vonne? NELL He had to go back to Shetfield's. KELSY Why? NELL Davis and Colten are back--out on bail already. Jefferson and Shelly wanted to get out, so he went to pick them up. He'll be back shortly.

KELSY Was that a good idea? NELL He promised he'd wait out back by the garden gate. He said he wouldn't go inside. He'll be back shortly. EXT. SHETFIELD ESTATE -- GARDEN GATE -- NIGHT We see Vonne's car parked on the road outside of the garden entrance. Vonne leans against the hood of the car. He looks at his watch then removes his cell phone. He punches in a number. He waits a moment. VONNE Come on, Jefferson--pick up. We hear a strange beep. OPERATOR We're sorry, the number you have reached is no longer-Vonne disconnects the call and stares at the back gate. presses another button. INT. VONNES ESTATE/HALLWAY -- CONTINUOUS The phone rings. Kelsy, Nell, and Carson look at one another. Nell insecurely folds her arms over her chest. NELL It could be Davis-Kelsy approaches the phone and picks it up. KELSY Hello? VONNE (V.O.) Kelsy? Listen--the phones aren't working inside the Shetfield mansion. I'm going in the get Jefferson and Shelly. If I don't call you back in fifteen minutes--call the police. KELSY Vonne--no. You can't go in there--not after what happened tonight. Davis will kill you. He

VONNE (V.O.) He'll also kill them. Jefferson disconnected the security system for me. I can slip in and out and never be noticed. Just call the police if I don't call you. KELSY No--let's just call the police. EXT. SHETFIELD ESTATE/GARDEN GATE -- NIGHT Vonne paces near his car with the phone to his ear. VONNE (into the phone) It may be nothing. I just need to see, but I can't wait for the police. What if something's happened? KELSY (V.O.) I'm going with you. VONNE No--you just stay with Nell and call the police in fifteen minutes. I mean it, Kelsy. Vonne disconnects the call and turns off the ringer. He places the phone in his pocket and works on the gate lock. It opens easily and he enters. INT. VONNE ESTATE/HALLWAY -- CONTINUOUS Kelsy slams down the phone with hostility and looks at Carson and Nell. KELSY (to Nell) I'm going out there to meet Vonne. He wants you to call the police in five minutes if he doesn't call back. Carson stops her from leaving. CARSON You aren't going out there. KELSY (firm) Vonne needs my help. stay here with Nell.

You just

Kelsy heads past him. Carson attempts to grab her with his right hand and only causes himself pain. Kelsy hurries out the door. Nell hurries to the door and locks it behind her. She turns to face Carson. NELL Your sister is about as crazy as my brother. CARSON I'm afraid it runs in my family. EXT. VONNE'S ESTATE -- NIGHT We see Kelsy pull away in Carson's car. No sooner does she leave, when a car without lights on rolls into the driveway and parks in the shadows. INT. SHETFIELD/KITCHEN Vonne slowly enters the dimly lit kitchen and looks around. He cautiously walks across the kitchen and toward the staff quarters. We see someone move on the back kitchen steps in the dim lighting. INT. VONNES ESTATE/LOUNGE Nell clings to the cordless phone while pacing before the fireplace. Carson sits on the arm of the nearby chair and watches her. NELL I told Vonne over and over not to do anything about the money. I'm just as much to blame. I never should've trusted either of them. I never would've thought Burton would swindle money out of me, and there was no way to prove it. CARSON I know that feeling all too well. Burton cheated my father. They were business partners. He was finally able to financially recover a year or two before he died. NELL Well, Vonne had other plans. He intended to take back what Burton had swindled from me. The rest you already know. You won't say anything to anyone else, will you?

CARSON No, I'm embarrassed he beat me to it. We hear the front door open. Both approach the doorway. Davis appears in the lounge doorway. Both appear surprised. NELL (horrified) How'd you get in? Get out! Davis holds up her house keys. DAVIS You forgot your keys. I knew there was a key to your brother's house on here. I want to talk to you. Nell appears angry and reveals her bruises. NELL I'd heard all you have to say. Carson appears furious and takes a stop toward him. CARSON Get out-DAVIS Back off. This is between me and my wife. No. NELL We're through.

CARSON You heard the lady. Get out now, or I'll call the police--or deal with you myself. The lights suddenly go out. Nell lets out a startled scream. All three look around. EXT. SHETFIELD ESTATE/GARDEN -- NIGHT Kelsy hurries through the extensive garden toward the back of the mansion. The back lights suddenly go out. The garden appears rather dark. Kelsy hesitates a moment then continues toward the house. The kitchen and staff quarter lights are out as well. She continues toward the house with a little more caution.

INT. KITCHEN Kelsy slowly enters the kitchen and looks around the very dim area. She slowly walks across the kitchen then pauses near the main door to the hall. KELSY (soft) What the hell am I doing? Kelsy turns and hurries back toward the back, kitchen door. A person appears in the shadows on the back stairs. Kelsy stops in her tracks. The lights come on. We see Chrissy standing at the bottom of the stairs. They stare at one another. CHRISSY Well--if it isn't my good friend, Kelsy. Up to no good sneaking around my house? Wasn't it enough that you'd insulted me and stole my boyfriend? KELSY Where are Jefferson and Shelly? CHRISSY How the hell should I know? Davis fired them an hour ago. Maybe they caught a cab and left town. CHRISSY Not going to deny stealing Vonne? KELSY If I don't find Jefferson and Shelly, the police will be on their way. Tell me where they are. I won't play your childish games. CHRISSY Let the police come. You're the one who'll be arrested for trespassing. I can legally shoot you for being here uninvited. KELSY Jefferson asked me over. is he? Where

CHRISSY You keep avoiding my accusations about Vonne. Why don't you just admit it? Admit you took him from me. KELSY I couldn't take what wasn't yours. You don't own people. Your entire family seems to have a problem realizing that. CHRISSY Vonne wanted me until you threw yourself at him! KELSY That's a lie, and you know it. Chrissy's about to lash out. She suddenly hesitates and lets out a startled gasp. Kelsy eyes her with some concern to her actions. We see the tip of a broad sword appear through Chrissy's mid-section. Kelsy cries out and jumps back with horror. Chrissy touches the tip of the exposed blade then looks to Kelsy with horror and fright. The blade is removed and Chrissy falls to the floor. The lights go out before her attacker can be seen, hidden by the stairs. Kelsy spins and bolts from the kitchen and into the hall. INT. VONNES ESTATE/LOUNGE Nell, Carson, and Davis stand in the dark lounge and look around. CARSON (to Nell) Call the police. NELL The cordless won't work without power. DAVIS Damn it--just fix the lights. We hear movement from within the hall. DAVIS No tricks, Vonne. CARSON That's not Vonne. (to Nell) A butler, perhaps. Davis turns.

NELL No. There shouldn't be anyone in the house besides us. Davis turns and enters the hall. CARSON Davis--don't. Both hurry toward the doorway. We hear a distinct pop. Nell and Carson suddenly stop. Colten steps into the doorway with a gun in his hand. It's not the same one he had earlier. Carson and Nell back up. He aims the gun at Carson. COLTEN It's done, my darling. Nell stares at Colten with a look of horror. NELL What? What are you talking about? COLTEN It's okay to tell him what our plan is. (to Carson) See, Davis came over here tonight, tried to kill Nell, shoots her lover, and then kills himself. Leaving Nell and me to get married--a hell of a lot richer from Davis's share of the inheritance. Carson looks at Nell with horror and surprise. back at him and quickly shakes her head. NELL No--he's lying. Carson stares at her and slowly backs away from her. CARSON You--and him? NELL Carson--please believe me! COLTEN Babe, drop the act. We don't need him anymore. Nell looks

NELL (to Colten) You bastard! Carson snatches the glass picture frame from the nearby table and throws it at Colten. Colten attempts to shoot and avoid the flying frame. The frame strikes him in the shoulder and shatters. The gun falls from his hands. Colten scrambles for the gun in the darkness. CARSON Run, Nell! Both bolt past Colten and from the lounge. INT. HALLWAY -- CONTINUOUS Nell and Carson run into the hallway. Nell slides in blood and lands on the floor near Davis's body. Nell screams. Carson pulls her to her feet. They run from the house. EXT. VONNE'S ESTATE -- CONTINUOUS Nell and Carson run across the lawn and to the garage. hide behind the garage. Carson grabs Nell's arm. CARSON I want you to stay hidden. I'm going to lead him to Shetfield's house. Call the police from the study and send them there. NELL But, Carson-CARSON Just do it. If I'm right, Vonne and my sister are in serious danger. It's only a block or two. I can outrun him. Nell nervously nods. NELL Good luck. Carson quickly kisses her and hurries from behind the garage. He runs across the grounds in the direction of Shetfield's estate. Colten appears from the house and shoots at Carson with the silencer on his gun. Carson runs toward the nearby church and its parking lot. Colten runs after him. Nell waits a moment then runs back for the house. INT. SHETFIELD ESTATE/HALLWAY They

Kelsy runs along the broad hallway and looks toward the stairs. Jenny! KELSY Jefferson! Anyone!

Kelsy turns and runs up the stairs. INT. SECOND FLOOR HALLWAY Kelsy swings the second floor banister and nearly collides with Jenny. Both women scream with surprise. JENNY (relief) Kelsy--what are you doing back here? KELSY There's no time to explain. Chrissy's been murdered in the kitchen. JENNY (horrified) Chrissy? What? KELSY It must be Colten or Davis. Have you seen Jefferson or Shelly? JENNY Davis wouldn't kill anyone. It had to be that Jefferson. He went psycho tonight. Oh, my God, Chrissy. KELSY You need to get Tess and get out of the house. The killer is downstairs. The phones are out. Come on. way. JENNY Tess's room is this They

Jenny and Kelsy run for the bedrooms down the hall. approach Tess's room. Jenny pounds on the door. Tess! JENNY Tess, open up!

The door opens to reveal a weary Tess. TESS What's going on?

JENNY We have to leave the house now! TESS Why? Jenny pulls on her. JENNY There's no time to explain. All three hurry back down the hall. We see a shadow of someone on the stairs. All three stop. JENNY We can go out the back. KELSY Go-Kelsy picks up a bronze statue and stands to the side of the stairs. Jenny ushers Tess along. Both appear concerned. They hurry toward the back of the house. Kelsy appears nervous while waiting. A man steps around the corner. Kelsy attempts to strike him. Vonne catches her arm and struggles from the force of the statue. Both fall to the floor. Kelsy stares at Vonne, who hovers over her. He bleeds from his temple. Both breathe heavily then relax. Vonne pulls her into a sitting position and hugs her. He then pulls away and appears furious. VONNE Damn it--what are you doing here? Kelsy eyes his injury. KELSY Are you okay? Vonne pulls both of them to their feet. VONNE Sneak attack in the servant's quarters. I can't find Shelly or Jefferson. I haven't seen anyone else, for that matter. KELSY You didn't see Chrissy? Chrissy? VONNE No, why?

KELSY She was killed in the kitchen. Oh, Jenny and Tess will be traumatized by that. VONNE Did you call the police? KELSY Nell should have. They should be here any minute. Vonne reaches inside his pocket then fumbles. VONNE Damn--my phone's gone. We'll wait outside for the police. Vonne pulls her back toward the stairs. down to the foyer below. INT. FOYER -- CONTINUOUS We see the front door is open. Colten enters with his gun drawn. He looks around with apparent hostility. INT. SECOND FLOOR HALLWAY -- CONTINUOUS Vonne pulls Kelsy back and away from the stairs. VONNE On second thought, maybe we won't. There's a pretty fine murder suspect. KELSY What should we do? VONNE The police will be here soon. say we hide. KELSY What about Jenny and Tess? VONNE Hopefully they left through the back door. Vonne pulls her along the hall. We hear someone coming up the main stairs. Vonne hurries Kelsy along the hall. We hear Jenny scream followed by Tess's shrill scream. Vonne and Kelsy run for the back stairs and the direction of their screams. Tess hurries up the back stairs with blood on her and a horrified look. I Both stop and look

Jenny--my God!

TESS She's dead!

Vonne hurries both into the master bedroom. INT. MASTER BEDROOM -- CONTINUOUS Vonne locks the door and signals for Tess to keep quiet. He hurries toward the balcony and opens the door. He motions for them. Both hurry toward him. VONNE (soft) We'll climb down the rose trellis. One at a time. Tess-you first. TESS (frightened) Please, no. I'm afraid of heights. Kelsy steps onto the terrace and looks down. back inside. KELSY We don't have time to debate it. You have to climb. The bedroom door suddenly vibrates harshly. All three jump with surprise. The door vibrates again. Vonne grabs the fire poker from the fireplace. The door is violently thrown open. Colten nearly falls into the room with his gun aimed. Vonne kicks the gun from his hand and strikes him on the shoulder with the fire poker. Colten quickly recovers and clutches the poker. He punches Vonne across the face. Kelsy steps forward to help. Tess suddenly slashes Kelsy's arm with a switchblade. Kelsy jumps with surprise, pain, and horror. Tess comes at her again. Kelsy darts across the room, grabs objects from the dressing table, and throws them at Tess. The knife falls from Tess's hand. Vonne strikes Colten several times. Colten falls against the dresser slightly dazed. Tess pulls the earlier stolen gun from her pants and aims it at Kelsy. Kelsy becomes motionless. Colten slowly straightens and smiles smugly. TESS Bet you didn't see that coming. VONNE You two are in on this together? She hurries

TESS Right under everyone's noses the entire time. The funny thing about this family--everyone's so wrapped in their own lives, they don't wonder what anyone else is doing. Colten makes a very good ally--and lover. Colten smiles slyly. TESS I couldn't have done it without him. We'd intended to just steal some cash and jewels, but someone beat us to it. Bosley saw me in the hallway. We just intended to mug him for those jewels, but since he'd seen me, we had to get rid of him. I was horrified that the jewels weren't on him. That's when we decided on the ultimate score. Daddy's inheritance--and frame Kitty. KELSY But then you became greedy and wanted it all. TESS And I should have it all! Having to put up with yet another drunken stepmother. Being so sheltered, I wouldn't dare talk to boys my own age! Having to put out to him-Colten gives her a strange look. CARSON What's that supposed to mean? TESS It means I no longer need you. Tess suddenly shoots Colten. to the floor. He strikes the wall then falls

TESS I'm not sharing with you. Carson appears through the open, balcony doors. He grabs Tess from behind, forces the gun from her hand, and tosses her to the floor. Tess stares at Carson with horror and surprise.

TESS Carson, I didn't do it! trying to frame me. CARSON (firm) Shut up--

They're

Tess springs to her feet and lunges for Carson. She begins punching, kicking, and screaming. Kelsy hurries for them and pulls Tess off of Carson. Tess begins to pull Kelsy's hair while screaming like a wild animal. Kelsy struggles to free her hair. Kelsy suddenly punches Tess in the mouth. Tess again lunges for her. Kelsy kicks her in the chest. Tess stumbles backwards and topples over the terrace railing. EXT. SHETFIELD ESTATE -- CONTINUOUS We see Tess fly from the terrace. She cries as she falls. We hear her land roughly. Vonne, Kelsy, and Carson appear on the terrace and look down. We see Tess broken on the driveway below. We see the police lights at the opening of the driveway. The sirens wail in the distance. INT. VONNES ESTATE/LOUNGE Vonne, Carson, Kelsy, and Nell sit around the lounge with drinks in their hands. Jefferson enters the lounge with a bandage on his head. JEFFERSON I'd just heard from Stanley. Jenny's going to be okay. NELL That's a relief. She's very lucky. JEFFERSON Shelly's already asleep. The ordeal of being locked in the pantry was rough on her. We're both grateful for the rest of the week off, Sir. VONNE Don't be ridiculous. It's been a rough weekend. You need the rest. Jefferson nods, smiles, and then walks away. stands. Nell slowly

NELL Well, now that the sun's up and there's a police outline in your hallway, I think I'll go to bed. Carson quickly stands and attempts a tiny smile. CARSON I'll walk you to your room. Vonne and Kelsy watch them leave with raised, curious brows. Vonne shakes his head. VONNE I don't even want to know what they're up too. KELSY Honestly, I'm too tired to care. Vonne smiles at her and places his hand on hers. VONNE So, I'm forgiven for teasing you with Victor, I'm forgiven for stealing from Burton to get my sister's money back, and I'm forgiven for misleading Chrissy to gain access to Burton's house. KELSY I suppose you're forgiven on all accounts. Clean slate? VONNE Clean slate. Think you can date a man only eight years older than you? Or must I color my hair gray? KELSY I think I can wait until you gray naturally. VONNE You really did captivate me that night at the reception. Nearly cost me my freedom. I almost couldn't leave when you took an interest even with my disguise.

KELSY I'd be lying if I said you didn't cross my mind every five minutes after that night. How did you get into Burton's suite without being caught on cameras? VONNE I'm incredibly crafty, but I'm not about to reveal my secrets. You may find a way to prevent me from entering your room while you sleep tonight. KELSY Who said I'd prevent you from entering? And I really don't intend to get much sleep anyway. VONNE In that case, isn't it past your bedtime? Kelsy smiles and kisses him quickly on the lips. KELSY I believe it is. Vonne groans softly, springs to his feet, and pulls her into his arms. VONNE If you'll permit me, I'd like to whisk you away-(smiles) For old times sake-KELSY Whisk away. Vonne gracefully dips her backwards, holds her there, and kisses her. FADE OUT
