Freeholder Brendan Gill and Bloomfield Councilman Michael Venezia Make Wagers on Mounties, Bengals Football
Newark -- Essex County Freeholder Brendan Gill and Bloomfield Councilman-At-Large Michael Venezia may be colleagues in local government, but their alliance stops where hometown football rivalries begin. When the Montclair Mounties and the Bloomfield Bengals face off this Saturday, these two politicians will have not just a friendly wager on this game, but more their pride. Gill and Venezia have agreed that, whoever suffers defeat, he will have to wear the others high school sweater to the next scheduled Essex freeholder or Bloomfield Township council meeting, respectively. Game on. Of the bet, Gill (MHS Class of 1992) had this to say, Im a big fan of Bloomfield, and Im proud to represent them on the county freeholder board. Even though Im rooting for the Mounties, Im looking forward to a good game. Bloomfield entered the post-season having never won a playoff game. Now, theyre playing for the championship. Despite their 14-7 loss on Thanksgiving, Venezia has faith in his team. Venezia, who graduated BHS Class of 2000 stated, Bloomfields on a run right now. Nobody expected us to get to where we are, and winning this Saturday is going to be a big deal for our town. The Star Ledger called this Saturdays matchup one of the best in the state tournament, and this hometown rivalry with deep roots is expected to be one of the closest watched. Bloomfield faces Montclair in the North Jersey Section 1 Group 5 final at MetLife stadium this Saturday, December 8 at 7pm. Brendan Gill represents the municipalities of Belleville, Glen Ridge, Nutley, and football rivals Bloomfield and Montclair on the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders.
