Approved by: (Prof.M.Muthukumaran) HOD / Mech PART-A (5*2=10 Marks) (Answer all Questions)

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Define shape function. What are the advantages of natural coordinates? Write the shape functions for a 1D, 2 noded bar element. State the properties of stiffness matrix. Distinguish between essential boundary conditions and natural boundary conditions.

PART-B (Answer all the Questions) (Q.NO 6 is a compulsory one)

6. Find the nodal deformation for stepped bar shown in following figure.

Take A1=2cm2, A2=1cm2 and E=2105N/mm2

(8)

7. (a) The stepped bar shown in the following figure is subjected to an increase in temperature of 80C. Determine the displacements, element stresses and support reactions. B=18.910-6/C, Al=2310-6/C, S=11.710-6/C, P1=60KN, P2=75KN

Bronze A= E= 2400mm2 83GPa

Aluminium 1200 mm2 70GPa Or

Steel 600 mm2 200GPa

(b) (i) Derive the stiffness matrix for a plane truss element. (ii) Derive the shape functions for a two noded bar element.

(8) (8)

8. (a) A thin steel plate of uniform thickness 25 mm is subjected to a point load of 420 N at mid depth as shown in the following figure. The plate is also subjected to self-weight. If Youngs modulus, E=210 5N/mm2 and unit weight density, =0.810-4N/mm3, calculate the following: (i) Displacement at each nodal point. (ii)Stresses in each element.

Or

(b) For the plane truss shown in the following figure, determine the horizontal and vertical displacements of nodal points and stresses in each element. All elements have E= 201GPa and A=410-4m2.
