Oliver _ As a result of the Great Depression of the 1930s, many apparent changes occurred in the fashion world; thus

creating new and different looks in comparison to fashion prior to the 1930s. A substantial amount of individuals recall the 1920s as a coming of age and glamorous decade for womens fashion; however when the 1930s arrived, different words were definitely used to describe the regenerated and distinct face of fashion. For instance, While women's fashions prior to the 1930s became bold, sometimes androgynous and notably daring, that approach to women's fashion in the 1930s changed. But the fashions of the 1930s did retain a romanticized image of the woman's shape and that was reflected in the fashions of the time (Thomas paragraph 3). In other words, the majority of fashion that originated from the 1920s was based on the idea of a boy like appearance or simple luxury, but that switched to a more feminine and practical style in which consumers could afford. The real reason for these effective changes was that people were feeling much less frivolous when they were enduring the worst economic collapse in the nations history (Thomas paragraph 1). People did not have money for the newest accessories or clothes, but the idea of recycling old clothes did eventually come up. There were a few problems with the idea of just wearing clothes from the last decade. For one thing, It was very noticeable if you were wearing an old dress because in the 1930s, fashion went back to the basi cs (Wednet 14). Usually people tried to reconstruct clothes in order to keep up with ongoing trends. Overall, the Great Depression was not only the main cause of changes in Fashion in the 1930s, but also contributed to a lot of hardships that many Americans had. Among the legendary styles of the 1930s were also the acclaimed and notorious fashion designers that introduced a variety of exquisite clothes for cheaper prices. Fashion designers were forced to adapt to the new economic surroundings and returned to a more basic style of design for womens clothing (Thomas paragraph 2). Even though the Stock

Market Crash of 1929 had a similar meaning to everyone, it affected various people differently. Many designers responded by cutting their prices, producing ready-to-wear clothes to make up for the low demand on couture garments, and by producing more practical clothes made of washable fabrics (Constantino 6). Even though creativity is essential for any successful designer, the economic circumstances of the 1930s made it exceptionally hard to assemble lively looks. There were fashion designers that were able to manage acceptable styles. For example, Two fashion designers that found the perfect blend of innovation in 1930s fashion but doing so within boundaries were Madeleine Vionnet and Elsa Schiaparelli (Thomas paragraph 5). These designers presented well known styles such as blazers and trousers which came in popular colors of black, navy, and grey (Niven paragraph 2). Vionnet and Schiaparelli also were known for creating clothes that symbolized the independence, femininity, and beauty of women. In general, the adaptations that designers had to make limited the extent of their ideas. Fashion was probably one of the most notable topics in the 1930s due to many styles created to portray the details behind the Great Depression and World War 2. In particular, many fashion looks were military inspired and also represented how a womens role was similar to a soldier (Constantino 57). Not only did fashion change, but so did a womens role in society. Also, manufacturing in general was major in the 1930s. Many designers had to reevaluate their companies which enabled manufacturers in the future to produce quality goods speedily, moderately priced, and within acceptable price margins (Tomas paragraph 29). This clearly proves that without fashion in the 1930s, many designers and manufacturers today would not have been as technology advanced. In the 1920s there were a lot of problems with printing techniques on designs, but those problems became nonexistent in the 1930s as designers gained more knowledge. Primarily fashion was a momentous event in the 1930s

that had a heavy influence on the aspects of the great Depression, women, and the business world of today. Although the 1930s was a decade of survival rather than a decade of luxury, many Americans still found it necessary to achieve total fitness and overall wellbeing. In the beginning of the 1930s, fashion and physical fitness combined to produce the inevitable trends of sunbathing and exercising in fashionable clothes. Even if a person was not active in any sport, but were content to watch, they wore what the fashion magazines called spectator clothes (Constantino 52). These clothes consisted of knee length shorts and sports shirts made of open weave fabrics (Constantino 18). Even though people in the Great Depression were forced to make many choices concerning their economic circumstances, a high demand of clothing remained throughout the decade. Specifically a large quantity of individuals wanted American apparel so imports dropped by 25% (Mulvey 21). Sunbathing first became popular in America; therefore clothes made for sunbathing were mostly found in America. In summary, despite the Great Depression people still enjoyed their hobbies and sports and designers offered the right clothing for them.
