MAGNETS A magnet is any object that has a magnetic field.

A magnetic field is the space that surrounds the magnet. The magnetic field attracts or pulls ferrous objects to it. Ferrous objects are things that have iron in them like nails and paper clips. Types of Magnets There are three major types of magnets: there are permanent, temporary, and electromagnets. Permanent magnets create their own magnetic field and are always magnetic. Temporary magnets lose their magnetism outside of a magnetic field. Electromagnets are magnets that have wire wrapped around them and it acts like a permanent magnet when electricity goes through it. Those are the three major magnets and their functions. An example of a permanent magnet would be a refrigerator magnet because it is inserted onto an object like a picture and can be placed on anything thats magnetic. If you take a magnet and put it over a pile of paper clips that would create a temporary magnet because the magnet will allow you to stick several paper clips to it but it wont be permanent because they can be removed. An example of an electromagnet would be a crane or a generator. Electromagnets are strong magnets but the super conductor is the strongest of them all. This magnet doesnt have any iron in it, but its made from special metals like tin, aluminum and ceramic. When theyre cooled to very low temperatures they become very strong. These super conductors are so strong they are powerful enough to operate a train. These trains go so fast that look like there floating. Very Cool Magnet Facts If you put North to South they will attract sides together, but if you put north and north or south and south together they will push away from each other.

The end of a magnet is called a pole one end is North Pole and the other end is South Pole. The Earth is a great magnet, at the center of the Earth there is iron and Earth also has a North and South Pole. If you heat a magnet up it could demagnetize it which would cause it to lose its magnetism. The colder a magnet is the stronger it is.
