How Long Would it Take? (1,000,000 sheet)

After working together as a class to see how long it would take to tap your desk 1,000,000 times, work with a group to test something else to 1,000,000 times. 1. Working with your group, choose something to take a sample of. Make it something you can do for 10 seconds straight. ___________________________________________________ Give your activity a shortened name here. __________ Predict how long it will take you to do this. ___________________________ 2. Using a stopwatch, carry out your trial for 10 seconds. Record your number below. 10 seconds = a__________ __________ Calculator Allowed! 3. Now multiply to find out how many times you could __________ in 1 minute. Think: There are six 10 second intervals in one minute. 1 minute = a x 6 a x 6 = b_____________ __________ per minute 4. Now multiply to find out how many times you could __________ in 1hour. Think: There are 60 minutes in one hour. 1 hour = b x 60 b x 60 = c__________________ __________ per hour 5. Now multiply to find out how many times you could __________ in 1 day. Think: There are 24 hours in one day. 1 day = c x 24, so c x 24 = d________________________ __________ per day

Name _________________________________ Now you are going to work backwards. 6. Divide 1,000,000 __________ (where you want to get to) by d (number of __________ in 1 day), whatever that is for you. Include 2 decimal places. 1,000,000 d = ________________ days for 1,000,000 __________ We are going to get more exact than that!! Heres where it gets sticky!! 7. Take d again and multiply it by the whole number part (number of whole days) of the answer you got for number 6 above. d x number of whole days = e____________________ __________ you can do in _____ days. Lets find out the decimal part of the day. We will find part of a day in hours. 8. Multiply 24 hours (1 day) by your part of a day (decimal to the hundredths place) in question 6 above. 24 x .__ __ = _________ hours Almost there! Stick with it!! 9. Now, look back up at the top and find c (number of __________ per hour). Multiply c by the number of whole hours you found in question 8 above. c x number of whole hours = f_______________________ __________ you can do in _______ hours. 10. Find out where you stand so far. Add e and f together to find out how many __________ you have so far. Work this out at the bottom of this page and record your answer here. e + f = g_________________________________ __________ so far

Keep your eye on the prize!!

Name _________________________________ 11. Subtract 1,000,000 g to find out how many more __________ you need. 1,000,000g =h__________________________ __________ still needed! 12. Divide h (number still needed) by b (number of __________ per minute). h b = i________________ minutes to get h __________ 13. Multiply b by the number of whole minutes you found in question 12 above. b x number of whole minutes = j_______________________ __________ you can do in _______ minutes. Add this to your days and hours at the bottom. g + j = k_________________________________ __________ you have so far. Just a few more to go!! 14. Now, subtract 1,000,000 k to find out how many more __________ you need. 1,000,000k =l__________________________ __________ still needed! Add l to your total at the bottom of the page. k + l should equal 1,000,000. 15.Divide l (number still needed) by a (number of __________ per 10 seconds). l a = m_________ number of 10 second intervals to get l __________ 16. Figure out how many seconds that is by multiplying m x 10 m x 10 = n__________ seconds 17. List your total number of days, hours, minutes, and seconds it would take you to get 1,000,000 __________! See # 7, # 9, # 13 and # 16 for your answers. It would take _______ days, _______hours, _______minutes, and ______seconds to get to 1,000,000 ________!!

Name _________________________________ Keep track of your problem here when it says to go to the bottom of the page.

e f + g j + k l +

Sowhat do you think? Were you surprised by how long it would take you to complete 1,000,000 of your sample? How did the actual results compare to your prediction?
