Project Title: Talk a Walk Around Union Neighborhood Created by: Hanna Kaier and Amanda Thompson Class:

CMAP Canyons School District 2013 Project Description There are many streets within the Union school boundaries that lack sidewalks or have damaged sidewalks. Our students are actively riding bikes, skateboards and scooters to school. They need safe sidewalks to travel on. Students will analyze five different sections (one section per class) of our neighborhood to track where we need sidewalks or sidewalks repaired. Students will work in small groups in different areas of their section. The sidewalks are damaged or missing and this creates hazards for students traveling to school.

Community Issue or Problem Selected -How project evolved? Community Partner(s) Project Objectives

Sandy City Students will navigate through their specific quadrant of our school boundaries using a GPS device to locate damaged or missing sidewalks. Math Standard 1: Students will expand number sense to include operations with rational numbers Objective 1: Represent rational numbers in a variety of ways Social Studies Standard 4: Students will understand current global issues and their rights and responsibilities in the interconnected world Objective 3: Determine human rights and responsibilities in the world How can we proactively fix the problems we are having with our sidewalks? As members of a community, what is our responsibility in ensuring public safety? Rubric where students will be rated by their peers on their individual participation during the project. Students will rate other members in the group for the following aspects: Can student use a GPS device to mark track points indicating damaged or missing sidewalk? Can student include specific notes for each track point that indicates what kind of work needs to be done? Can student find previous track points that have been marked on the GPS device?

Can student export that information into a Google document or into the Garmin Basecamp App? Was student an active participant?

The students will make a Google Document with the information that was gathered around the Union Boundary. Allocate 5 different sections of our neighborhood (one for each math class) 1. Within each section divide into small regions that can be managed in the amount of time we have allotted for that class period. 2. Give each group a GPS and the materials they will need to record all of the data. 3. The students and the teacher will walk down to the section of neighborhood and collect the data in their required section. 4. After data is recorded, the students will walk back to the school to record the data they collected into a Google document (this document will be a shared document that the students can all have access to). 5. The students will then evaluate themselves on how their group members participated. 6. Present data to Sandy City Map of Union Middle School Boundary, GPS devices, clipboard, record sheet, pen/pencil, computer Know how to use a GPS device- including how to make tracking points and how to manage them Know how import data into a Google document Know how to identify sidewalk in need of repair or missing Know how to record data collected

Project Team Member Roles

Teacher(s): Manage students during data collection Students: Collect Data and Prepare Data to be submitted to Sandy City Partner(s): Sandy City will use this information to determine if sidewalk repairs are appropriate

Celebration/Presentation

The students are going to present the data they collect to Sandy City so that they can make the proper repairs.

Project Evaluation

The students will be evaluated on the Google Documents that they create with the data collected.

Plans for Future CMaP Activities

Go out again to see what sidewalks have been added and what sidewalks have been fixed. We can update our data by finding what new parts of the sidewalks need to be updated!
