Application Diversity

APPLICATIONS
Hydril Pulsation Dampeners are used worldwide in a variety of applications to reduce the damaging effects of fluid flow pulsations in suction, discharge and hydraulic flow system lines. All Hydril Pulsation Dampeners adhere to worldwide quality standards and are certified in the following: ISO 9001, Quality management systems API Specification Q1, Specification for Quality Programs ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Other certifications available include Det Norske Veritas (DNV), American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Lloyds of London and CE.

HYDRAULIC SURGE ABSORBER

All flowing media possess kinetic energy, which when abruptly stopped, is transformed into pressure energy, often creating surges dangerously greater than the rated line pressure. This "water hammer" phenomenon frequently occurs with quick-acting valve closures and with sudden pump shutdowns or start-ups. Forces can be generated that are large enough to rupture piping and

DISCHARGE PULSATION DAMPENER

connections or damage equipment and instrumentation. These dangerous surges occur in high speed fueling of aircraft, truck and tank car loading, descaling and hydraulic systems. The general rule for locating a surge absorber is simple: it should be placed upstream and as close to the surge source as possible.

Discharge pulsations are responsible for mechanical vibrations and fatigue failures of pump components such as valves, fluid cylinders, system instrumentation, pipe, and fittings. A Hydril PD mounted close to the discharge side will significantly moderate these pulsations to acceptable levels, greatly prolonging the life of the system.

ENERGY STORAGE

SUCTION STABILIZER

When a hydraulic system experiences pump or electrical power failure, Without suction stabilization, pumps cannot function smoothly or efficiently. The cylinders can be starved and internal cavitation can result, as well as, the premature wear and failure of pump parts such as valve seats, seals, springs, plungers, and packing. A Hydril suction stabilizer mounted close to the inlet of a pump reduces acceleration head and insures an even and complete filing of each cylinder. The charged area of the suction stabilizer supplies the necessary force to accelerate the fluid intake as the pump plungers begin each stroke. a Hydril accumulator is ideal for supplying hydraulic fluid over short intervals for equipment such as rotating machinery and lube oil systems. Sight glass models are available with position indicator systems to verify precharge and fluid level, reducing maintenance time.

Installation of a Hydril accumulator near the check valve absorbs this energy. systems and energy storage for lube oil systems.

THERMAL EXPANSION AIRPORT REFUELING SYSTEMS

Pressures in closed hydraulic systems fluctuate from changes in temperature. Installation of a Hydril accumulator allows fluid to expand and contract, thus limiting the change in system pressure.

TRANSFER BARRIER
When the interaction of fluids is essential to the operation of a system, and they cannot be mixed together, the Hydril accumulator can be used to isolate the fluids and monitor the interaction.

OILFIELD MUD PUMPS

Newark, New Jersey and Dallas-Fort Worth are just a few of the airport locations using Hydril accumulators.

LEAKAGE COMPENSATOR
In systems where leakage is critical to its function, a Hydril accumulator provides a ready reservoir of fluid. An example would be lube oil systems for turbines where a ready supply of fluid during shut-down is essential to protect the turbines from damage.

Hydril pulsation dampeners and suction stabilizers are serving on oilfield drilling mud pumps worldwide.

Nitrogen gas fills the entire internal volume.

Introduced over 50 years ago to solve pulsation problems with oilfield reciprocating mud pumps, the K-Series accumulator has built an unmatched reputation for dependability and durability. A stabilizer disk enhances reliability by precluding the trapping of fluids in folds of the diaphragm, which increases diaphragm life and predictability. Accumulators are available in capacities of 10, 20 and 80 gallons and pressures to 7,500 psi for a variety of large scale pulsation and surge control applications such as airport fueling systems, tank truck and marine loading racks, pipeline slurries, fire water systems and sewage lines. The K-Series accumulators feature a replaceable bottom plate, desirable for abrasive slurries such as coal and mud. All K-Series bottom plates are field replaceable, eliminating costly shop repairs and down time. A large cover plate allows fast diaphragm replacement without removing the body from a line. The pressure gauge and charge valve are protected from damage by a heavy duty cover which also serves as a lifting device. All K-Series accumulators are pressure vessels which are ASME code stamped. During periods of minimum pressure, the gas expands, forcing liquid from the accumulator into the system. During periods of peak system pressure, the nitrogen gas is compressed, absorbing energy in the system.

PASAFE Series Pulsation Dampeners

AVAILABLE IN THREE FLOW THROUGH DESIGNS: R-PASAFE C-PASAFE S-PASAFE

The PASAFE* series of discharge dampeners and suction stabilizers are the newest addition to the pulsation and surge control product line. PASAFE pulsation control units reduce hydraulic pulsation caused by the flow variation of positive displacement pumps as well as the higher frequency acceleration pulses generated by the valve action and fill efficiency of the pump. The result is smoother fluid flow with less wear on pump parts and fluid ends; reduced piping vibration and reduced pump room noise. PASAFE units are virtually maintenance free and are engineered to operate in the toughest environments that handle abrasive, corrosive, high temperature and high pressure fluid. The PASAFE provides trouble free service in oil well drilling, slurry pipelines, deep direct lift mine dewatering, chemical processing, water purification and high pressure water cleaning. Capacities range from 1/4 to 600 gallons, and pressure ratings from 75 to 15,000 psi. Manufactured, tested and U stamped in accordance with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. Units are available in carbon steel, stainless steel, duplex stainless steel, or HDPE. Other materials are available for special applications.

R-PASAFE DAMPENERS FOR INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS

Reactive R-PASAFE dampeners utilize the liquid volume within the unit to dampen pulsations. These units are available for both discharge and suction applications. They are truly maintenance free because they use no elastomers and require no nitrogen precharge or adjustment. Ideal for high temperature or chemical applications that would cause compatibility problems with elastomers Designed to maintain a constant pulsation level across the pumps entire operating pressure range. No adjustments are necessary when the pump discharge pressure is increased or decreased

Combination K-Series and R-PASAFE

COMBINED PERFORMANCE OF R-PASAFE WITH K-SERIES

Pulsation control equipment comes in various types and configurations. The basic dampening mechanisms are pneumatic and liquid. Combining of the two types provides the unique benefits of each mechanism. The K-Series dampener provides excellent pulsation control when the operating pressure is above the nitrogen precharge pressure, however, no dampening occurs when the system operating pressure is below the set precharge pressure and dampener performance decreases as the system operating pressure increases. The R-Pasafe is designed to operate over the entire operating pressure range while limiting the peak to peak pulsation levels to below 100 psig. Combining the K-Series and R-PASAFE in these applications has shown a synergistic effect by dramatically lowering the peak to peak pulsation levels. The chart below validates the synergistic performance by combining the K-Series and the R-PASAFE Series Dampeners. Combination discharge dampeners used in a mining/slurry application.

The by-pass check valve is desirable on most surge absorber applications. This valve provides an unobstructed opening for the fluid when flowing into the surge absorber and a restricted opening when flowing out. The check valve prevents back-surge of the trapped fluid, releasing the fluid in a slow, controlled manner. The by-pass check valve extends the diaphragm life and improves system efficiency.

Hydril Diaphragm Fluid Compatibility Chart

K-Series

IP-Series

The unique Hydril diaphragm is designed for long life service. It is molded as a single unit compared to conventional bladders which are spliced using prevulcanized sections. This one-piece design reduces points of stress concentration, greatly extending service life. Both the K and IP-Series diaphragms are molded to the exact dimensions of the vessel's internal cavity. The diaphragm rolls and unrolls inside the body instead of flexing or folding, virtually eliminating stretching fatigue. This full-flexing action, enhanced by the diaphragm stabiliz-

er on the K-Series, provides self cleaning by eliminating dead spots where debris and gas build-up could accumulate. Hydril offers 10 diaphragm materials to provide fluid compatibility for a wide range of applications. Hydril manufactures its own rubber to insure high quality. Hydril has been a leader in high performance rubber for over 20 years. Hydril formulates and mixes its own rubber compounds. A computerized laboratory testing, monitoring, and control system have made Hydril rubber the standard of performance in its field.
