June 2013 To whom it may concern, I am writing this letter to recommend Mr.

Raymond Hayward for the position of elementary teacher. Mr. Hayward and I have been colleagues on the same team at School #12 for the past seven years. I have been a teacher in the Rochester City School District for 17 years. I have worked in a variety of grade levels and with a variety of colleagues. Mr. Hayward is one of the best teachers I have worked with as well as one of the most enjoyable. Mr. Hayward and I have worked together on several collegial circles. Together, we have read a variety of professional reading materials and worked together to implement the ideas learned into our own classrooms. We have created materials to supplement our curriculum, created strategies to deal with both enriching students and supporting students in need, and collaborated to scaffold our new curriculum while raising rigor. Mr. Hayward has continued to be an integral part of these collegial teams. He is always quick to share his ideas and invent creative ways to problem solve. Whenever work is delegated Mr. Hayward is always first to offer his help. Having him on my team has also made this work more fun to do. Mr. Hayward is responsible for planning, implementing, and assessing a variety of lessons and units taught across the curriculum which has seen many changes over the last seven years. His lessons are always well planned through collaboration with colleagues as well as a review of the state standards. Mr. Hayward presents each lesson in a manner that reaches every child and connects all learning styles while keeping in mind the specific needs of the population. His excitement for learning is evident every time he begins an activity and the students find it contagious. Mr. Haywards directions and expectations are clear, consistent, and created with student success in mind. The guidelines for assessment are fair and shared with the students prior to each activity. One of Mr. Haywards greatest strengths is his ability to effectively utilize technology to research and present his lessons. Through this research he is able to present supplementary materials that add to his already well planned lessons. He is also able to effectively modify student material in order to increase student success as well as to make it relevant and kid-friendly. The students have been able to use our computer lab and laptop computers with assistance from Mr. Hayward who created and assigned skill appropriate lessons through programs like Lexia, Compass, and First in Math. Mr.Haywards use of the Smartboard during instruction helps to better engage the students and make their learning interactive. He continues to model the importance of technology in our lives and gives the students the opportunity to see its purpose and effectiveness.

Another one of Mr. Haywards strengths is his ability to self evaluate and adjust his teaching. Through our collegial discussions, I have been able to see that he is keenly aware of what small changes need to be made to allow the students greater success. He has sought out the constructive criticism of colleagues in an effort to better serve the students. Mr. Haywards humility allows him to utilize his colleagues knowledge to constantly build on his strengths. Another one of Mr. Haywards greatest strengths is his behavior management. He follows the schools Code of Conduct and is always clear in his expectations. This allows the children to have structure in a safe and calm environment. Mr. Hayward utilizes a clear and consistent behavior plan. Through the use of this plan, the students are able to follow all the classroom and school procedures with minimal interruption. As part of our schools Problem Solving/Intervention team, Mr. Hayward is also heavily involved in the creation and implementation of FBAs and BIPs. Mr. Haywards desire to get to know the students personally helps him build an understanding of mutual respect and discipline with the students. He continues to be fair and consistent in his dealings with behavior issues. It is my pleasure to work with Mr. Hayward. He is a team player who would be an excellent addition to any staff. His ability to effectively communicate with both students and staff will help him continue to build productive relationships throughout his career. Mr. Hayward has certainly made a positive impact on my teaching. I feel privileged to work alongside such a passionate and knowledgeable colleague. Sincerely, Mary Kay Lovell Third Grade Teacher School #12 Rochester City School District Marykay.lovell@rcsdk12.org
