Common Patterns of Participation on Twitter


It can be difficult to believe that meaningful professional development can actually occur in Twitter, a social media service that limits messages to 140 characters. To build confidence in the value of joining the Twitterverse, for a few weeks, consider monitoring the messages that any educator using Twitter is posting, and then complete this handout.

Questions to Consider
1. What trends do you notice in the patterns of participation for the educator that youve been monitoring? Are certain behaviors more common than others? Are there certain behaviors that seem more valuable to you than others? Which ones? Why?

Nicholas has a very active blog, where he posts all kinds of great information. Most of his Tweets for the time period I've been following him refer to his blog. Other tweets refer to his news feed (ed news!), and he also tweets photos of things he's using in his classroom like IdeaPaint and he also uses the hash tag #MakeThisHappen which takes you to a really cool place where people share awesome ideas NEED TO HAPPEN! 2. Did you learn anythat lessons that will be valuable in your primary work while monitoring the
Twitter stream of this educator? What were they? How did this information help you do your job better or make your work easier?

Not so far. I was hopeful I'd get to see how an educator is using Twitter to communicate with students/parents, but haven't seen Nicholas doing this. I've also been following Ramsay Musallam and he doesn't seem to be using it to keep in touch with students either. So far, the only thing I've seen that I might be interested in using is the posts about a blog, which I'm not doing right now. Following is cool though because I do any get ideas. 3. I polled my own students the other day to discover that they either aren't using Twitter or they aren't going to tell me they are using Twitter. So no, I haven't learned anything yet about how I could use this social network with my students. I am impressed, however, with how educators are using the space to communicate with each other and share ideas. Most of the tweets I found useful were basically links to 4. I'm still interested in on seeing how teachers use Twitter to communicate with parents/students, and I'm interested in knowing what parents/students think about this mode of communication. I am excited about following some folks, but since most of the tweets I'm interested in require following a link to a longer piece, I'm not yet excited about building my own network. I will continue to follow the educators I'm following, and I will spend some time this summer seeking out others. I'm definitely not ready to start using a Twitter account myself.
