Abstract
A variety of problems related to the development and expansion of urban cities, along
with the constantly increasing needs of their inhabitants, have led to the search for
innovative and environmentally friendly construction solution.
The present project deals with the underground urban development, in agreement with
the sustainability concept, with the exploitation of the area below the Earth surface and
its connection with the over ground area.
Moving on, this paper aims at promoting the idea of partial underground living and at
pointing out the important benefits that derive from such an effort. In addition, the
advantages of an earth-sheltered residence has in relation to a common shelter are
highlighted.
Therefore, the construction of an earth-sheltered, country-side, residence is proposed,
which will be located on Kea island, with a capacity to host a four-member family. The
above mentioned construction will be built on an inclined plot. The Cut and Cover
construction method will be used during the construction process, allowing maximizing
the utility of the available spaces within the earth-sheltered residence.
The selection of Kea island, as the most suitable location for such an effort, has been
made based on a number of criteria. Typically, we report that the orientation and
inclination of the hill side of the plot offer the possibility of natural lighting and airing in
the whole earth-sheltered residence.
The construction is characterized by elements which relate to its environment as they are
built in to the design (culture) of the island's traditional architecture and morphology.
To conclude, the innovative design of the proposed earth-sheltered residence turns the
residence into a reference point that characterizes the wider region.
