Preface

Craniofacial Surgery

Barry Steinberg, MD, DDS, PhD, FACS Guest Editor

What can be so heartbreaking as to have a child born with a deformity that could possibly interfere with social development? The bonding with the parents and child disturbed; the concept of the beautiful baby cast away. What about the defect so shattering that normal function is impossible? Daily activity easy to others now a major undertaking; parents lives turned upside down. What better motivation is needed to set in motion the opportunity to direct this child along the road to a more normal life. Care of the child born with craniofacial deformity requires the care and skills of specially trained individuals. This addition to the Atlas of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics of North America was written by individuals with many years of training and experience. They have dedicated themselves to the care and well being of children with deformities. The chapters they have written are reective of their strong and varied backgrounds. While this book does not cover the total spectrum of craniofacial surgery, it should give the reader insight into selected but signicant topics in the area. I would like to thank the authors for their time and efforts. It is my hope that the reader will nd information useful to help someones child.
