Review of the Parent/Student Handbook for the 2013-14 School Year Belinda Trombley June 2013 PAGE COMMENTS

Table of There is no special education section, except the last page in the nonContents discrimination policy. I would suggest a phone number page. Not all parents have computer access. 5-6 (Students who are in need of greater levels of support are referred to outside organizations) This seems vague. Perhaps describing Rti interventions, and a bit more about the special education process, or list our building due process facilitator or the department chair. 6 Cultural liason was not allowed to work with special education students because of funding, but my question is that all students are general education students first, so why would they be excluded. Maybe this should specify Rti interventions, 2 and 3. 7 Add- Immunizations need to be on file by 6th grade, make sure an emergency contact is given, are parents welcome and informed when a child is referred to the student assessment team (sat), list the name of contacts for advocates if their child is not listed. This should be listed on front page and in languages of the children/parents in our district. Perhaps flagged and passed out on a needs basis. 8 Valid ID of parent for security. The locker clean out day quarterly does not happen. Change the cell phone policy to teacher approved technology use, and cell phones before and after school. 9 Identification card use must be changed or enforced. Students do not wear their IDs around their necks at all times. Should consequences be listed is this a safety/security issue? Lost or destroyed textbooks: Parents/students confused over the fines. Students have said that they dont need to bring the book back because they are fined. They dont realize fines are dropped when book is returned. Can students work off Media fines? Some students have had lost/stolen/misplaced books from elementary and can no longer take out books. This does not encourage literacy. Nuisance object-Rewrite student cell phone use since this has changed. If a bus does not arrive is this excused or unexcused? Tardy to class. Is there a hierarchy of consequences? Homework/make-up work. Teachers/parents should communicate planner use expectations. Students that arrive before 7:40, are they supervised in the foyer? Are there consequences for excessive missing of the bus.

We expect that parents Note that bandanas specifically may not be worn. It is a confusing dress issue. Many girls wear them as headbands and it is conflicted amongst teachers and students. Dress code needs to be enforced if it is in the handbook. Electronics cell phone use , the recording of disruptive behavior needs a more severe consequence? Corridor passes.should yellow passes be eliminated if we are going to use planner passes? List grade level administrator. Explain N/M (no mark, and P (pass) Change the dates of report cards to be sent for 2013-14 school year. Note that special education progress will be reported the same time as general education. Conferences- Note IEP meetings/Special Education Meetings. WIN days, have an opportunity to work on reading and math(did this happen? ) If we are not going to do this, should it be taken out? ZAP needs to be consistent. My own child had zeros but no zap time. Can zap become after school? Not a lot of time to complete? Under need help Special Education could be listed.
