Artifact 6: Student Choices with Reading Program Goal: 1 Standards: 4 Upon entering the MATC program I knew that

I wanted to focus on reading when taking my classes. One of the first classes I took in the program was TE 807 professional development and inquiry. In that class we were required to research an issue we saw within our classrooms to try to come up with ways that we could solve the problem. I saw this as an opportunity to look closer at student motivation with reading inside my classroom and why it was suffering. Through the research project I was able to look at why my students seemed to have a lack of motivation with reading. I began my research by surveying my students regarding their opinion on reading and found some commonalities between the surveys. I found that while some of my students didnt enjoy the reading we were doing in class, they did enjoy the reading they were doing on their own time. This made me want to look closer at whether or not student choice had any effect on motivation with reading. Upon researching student choices, I found that there were a few different ways to try to provide students with them when doing reading in class. Two of the different ways I researched more were text sets and sustained silent reading. My plan was to look closer at if either of these would help with the motivation issues I had in class. I included this artifact because the research I conducted had a direct affect on my classroom. In the fall when I went back to school, I immediately put into place a sustained silent reading program with my students. I knew through my research in this class and through other reading classes that through students reading more, they would develop better reading and writing skills. I have seen an increase in motivation with student regarding reading especially during sustained silent reading. I plan to keep this idea in place and develop it more in the upcoming school year.
