Artifact 7: Favorite Mistake Narrative Writing Lesson Program Goal: 2 Standards: 2 The artifact is another reflection of how I have

put things I have learned through the MATC program into place in my classroom. In TE 848 writing assessment and instruction developed skills for writing instruction in my classroom. One of the writing skills I researched was using mentor texts in the classroom as examples of what good writing should look like so that they can develop their own writing on their own. This lesson puts the ideas researched on using mentor texts into place. The lesson begins with a mentor text that revolves around the theme for the lesson and essentially their writing topic. Students use this mentor text as a way to prompt their writing on the topic. Students then go on to read a mentor narrative text A Mistake that Should Last a Lifetime by Jesseanne Collins that they will study closely for things the author does in her writing. They are given instructions to look for expression and reflection in the writing, which are essential pieces to a narrative, and we also discuss the parts of writing that stand out most to them. By looking closer at how she writes her narrative, they will be able to use that as a model when they create their own narratives at the end of the lesson. I included this piece because it shows how I am able to utilize the skills and knowledge gained during my masters into place. With the new common core state standards, it is essential that our students understand and be able to write in many different genres. The use of mentor texts will help students write in different genres even when they are not in the classroom.
