Short note on Sri Lankan Education-2013 Youth literacy rate stands at 98% Computer literacy rate at 35% Primary

school enrolment rate over 99% An education system which dictates 9 years of compulsory schooling for every child is in place. The free education system established in 1945 is a result of the initiative of C. W. W. Kannangara and A. Ratnayake. It is one of the few countries in the world that provide universal free education from primary to tertiary stage. Madhya Maha Vidyalayas- were introduced to facilitate education of Sri Lanka's rural children by 1942extensive reforms (free of charge, use national languages, Rationalize the school system,religion, Protect teachers, adult education) 1980s changes system of schools -central government schools, ministry-national & provincial government. Today 9,830 government schools, 817 private schools and Pirivenas/ Lack of responsiveness to labour market, an effective linkage between secondary and tertiary education is one problem in the education system. First schools begun under Colebrooke Commission in 1836- Royal College, S. Thomas' College in Mount Lavinia, Trinity College in Kandy/ Buddhist schools- Ananda, Bandaranayake, Dharmaraja, Musaeus ,vishaka/ catholic schools- St. Joseph's College, St Bridget's Convent, St Peter's College

University- 1st in 1870, Ceylon Medical School


Today there are 15 public universities in Sri Lanka.
