Bsma: WHaTs IT aLL aBOUT?

Hello fellow BSMA students! This is your local reporter Adam Chutek here with another issue of the BSMA Tribune, your quarterly source of fun and information! Now, some of you may ask what this thing we call the Biosciences and Medicine Academy is all about. The BSMA is geared for those who are seeking higher education in both math and science. The academy also provides students with Project Lead the Way courses. These classes focus directly on the broad subject that is bioscience and medicine. Project Lead the Way provides students with educational experiences that will grant them excellent preparedness for the medical field. The Biosciences and Medicine Academy here at Francis Tuttle is not for the faint of heart, as it only offers Pre-AP and AP courses. As my fellow futurehealthcare professionals, I want to wish you good luck in all aspects of your life. Meet your challenges head on, and you just may find how successful you can truly be.

Letter From the Editor

In addition, we have an interview with second year, Lydia Hoey, about her first year here in the BSMA. Lastly, we have another article from HOSA State Officer Aamr Hasanjee about new robotic surgical practices that could end up saving your life! To the Students
Hey guys, I just wanted
to take a moment to commend you all for your choice of attending the BSMA. For some it may have been a tough decision or maybe even a challenge to gain acceptance. All of you, however, persevered. Just a quick heads-up, the BSMA is hard. There's no sugar-coating it, it just is. It does, however, give you the tools you NEED to succeed in the healthcare field. Coming from the experience and point of view of a third year, I personally cannot see where I would be had I not decided to come here. Some of you may drop out, but that is inevitable. The healthcare field just isn't for everyone. But thats one of the greatest things about the BSMA is that it allows you to get that experience and determine whether or not it is right for you, before you waste your money in college deciding if you want to be a doctor. Another amazing facet of the Biosciences and Medicine Academy is our AMAZING staff. I don't know if you guys have figured this out or not yet, but the teachers are ALWAYS here for you. They are some of the most helpful, nice, caring, and selfless people in the world. Not only do we have amazing teachers who push you to be your best in everything you do, academic or otherwise, and who are willing to sacrifice their nights and weekends so you can learn redox, but we also have an amazing secretary Mrs. Gin-

ger, aka the nicest lady in the entire world (scientifically proven). I guess we also have our Assistant Director of Health Sciences, Mr. Pierce... He sometimes does stuff. :) But I digress, students DO NOT LET THESE RESOURCES GO TO WASTE. You have all these faculty members and older students who are always willing to lend a helping hand when its needed. So, in short, I want to formally welcome you to the BSMA from all of us previous students and wish you the best of luck! I can't wait to see this year progress and observe all of you grow as not only healthcare professionals, but as individuals.

In the first place, God made idiots. That was for practice. Then he made school boards. -Mark Twain

What is Hosa?
To those new to HOSA: Welcome! For those who arent: Welcome Back! HOSA has been a life-changing experience for me, and I can promise you that although it may be confusing and chaotic at first, those of you who are new will come to love it for everything that it is. Weve been the organization for Future Health Professionals since 1976, and a little bits changed since then. We now have over 138,000 members in 50 states and territories. These students range anywhere from Freshmen in high school to adults earning advanced degrees in health science. We believe that the future of health is in the hands of our generation, and thats one reason why we get so excited about healthcare. A huge part of HOSA for many members is competitive events, and we have 58 to choose from. These range from skill events to team events to leadership events, and can propel a student to one of our National Leadership Conferences! This year well celebrate our success in Nashville, Tennessee. Along with event award-winners, members recognized for outstanding work in service or leadership travel to this weeklong conference for an incredible experience. This year weve taken on the challenge of partnering with the Cystic Fibrosis Founda-

tion, and we hope that youll work with your chapter to hold events throughout the year raising funds and awareness for the over 70,000 people living with CF. Learn more about how to get involved and qualify to attend the NLC at the allnew hosa.org and also follow us on Twitter @nationalhosa and on Facebook at National HOSA! All in all, the best way to explain what we do is by saying this: we do what you do. As a student leader, the future of healthcare is counting on you to achieve your dreams and make a difference. We change lives; its up to you to save them. Welcome to the club.

1st Year Reminiscence

How are you enjoying
your second year of Francis Tuttle? I think that this year is going to be full of great opportunities and its going to be lots of fun. In some cases, it has been challenging but rewarding. Its been rewarding. I feel like I can apply some of the things Ive been learning here to everyday life and can use it to benefit others. How do you feel your first year at Francis Tuttle has helped you? Ive had to learn how to become more open and Ive had to learn how to do a lot more public speaking. I feel like it has made me a better person in the everyday life because it has taught me how to be more of a leader and to stay determined and to work hard for the things I want. I love Francis Tuttle! Haha it is basically my life! Describe the most memorable event of your first year in the BSMA. Definitely HOSA, more specifically the HOSA Bowl Competition. My team got first place at Spring Leadership Conference and we got to go to National Competition in Orlando, Florida over the summer last year. I like how HOSA gets you involved and makes you

work hard, but maybe thats why the thrill is so exhilarating. You have put so much work into this one event and its just so exciting to reap the benefits of all your preparation. How do you like the teachers of the BSMA? I like how all the teachers encourage you and care about what youre doing. They care about what youre doing and how youre doing and want to see you succeed. Plus theyre lots of fun! They really push you to do your best. The also stress the importance of helping others through service to the community.

Robots Save our Lives? by Aamr Hasanjee

Now coming to the stage:
the robotic heart catheter! Welcoming this new technology, the Banner Heart Hospital in Arizona is the first institute to provide this late-breaking heart procedure. The all-new Sensei X by Hansen Medical, Inc. provides physicians with a way to robotically control a catheter from a remote workstation. Not only does this catheter provide access to areas previously unreachable by a physician, it does so in 3-D. By allowing doctors to more accurately place catheters, the Sensei X reduces patient exposure to radiation, a common area of concern. This technology allows physicians with the opportunity to more accurately map out the abnormalities in the heart rythms of patients. This means that doctors are now one step closer to the eradication of atrial fibrillation, a condition causing irregular heart beats that can lead to palpitations, fainting, congestive heart failure, or even stroke. Estimates have stated that approximately 10% of all people 80 years or older have complex arrhythmias. These could possibly lead to heart failure and stroke, likely causing death in people so old. With this new technology, doctors hope to eradicate this endemic in the United States and save the lives of millions.
