TEMPLATE FOR CMaP PROJECT

Project Title: Kid-Friendly Cottonwood Heights Created by: Teju Shearer Class: CMAP Project Description Students will create a map of places that they, and others kids their same age, like to spend time in the Cottonwood Heights area. This data along with a rating, created and administered by students, will be provided to Cottonwood Heights for inclusion on their city website. There are very few search results for kid-friendly places in the Cottonwood Heights area. Most listings only include places to eat. Since the city has so many young families, I thought it would be good if parents had a resource of places they could take their kids for recreation. This map would be kid approved since we are interviewing kids and kids are giving the ratings. City of Cottonwood Heights, webmaster, council members Local businesses

Project Objectives

Interview and collect data from school-aged kids. Create survey to create ratings. Administer surveys. Take way points at various locations. Create map.

Utah Core Standards/Objectives

Graph points on the coordinate plane to solve real-world and mathematical problems.
1. Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond (e.g., x-axis and xcoordinate, y-axis and y-coordinate). 2. Represent real world and mathematical problems by graphing points in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane, and interpret coordinate values of points in the context of the situation.

Essential Question(s) -Spatial Issue

What places do kids visit most in Cottonwood Heights? Why are those places so popular? Do the seasons affect where kids go? Each student will be required to interview at least 15 kids. Data for each participant should be filled out completely and in detail.

Project Timeline (include a step by step Procedures)

2 Weeks- 1 Month 1. Decide on survey questions (How will the rating be measured? For example: How much does it cost to go there? Do kids need to be accompanied by an adult?) 2. Create surveys and tables for data collection 3. Collect data 4. Analyze data: What places were mentioned most? What places should be included in this map? 5. Assign volunteers to mark way points (with parent help) 6. Assemble data 7. Create map 8. Present
