Project Title: Safe Walking Route to School Created by: Suzanne Harris Class: Lindon UEN CMap 2013

Project Description Map the routes that are safe for students to walk to and from school. Use GPS units and maps to compile data and share with students and families Community Issue or Problem Selected -How project evolved? We have new school boundaries and new students that are walking to our school this year. With the partnership with the Sandy City Police we would like to identify and map safe routes to school. Sandy City Police Department Project Objectives Identify and map safe walking routes for the existing and new population that will be attending Altara Elementary.

this question? How do we record and disseminate the safe routes that have been identified? Assessments (rubrics, scoring guides) The assessment type will be performance based. The projects will be completed by small groups of students and the groups will have a possible score of 10 points. They will earn the points for observed behavior (3), product (3), and presentation of map and data (4). tracks with GPS units tracks applied to maps materials that will be shared with the schools population of the safe routes tied to the neighborhoods.

Introduce the problem and ask for ideas. Indtroduce how we are going to map the routes Instruct and practice with the GPS units Consult with the Sandy City Police Department to gain information about criteria that needs to be met to qualify as a safe route. 5. Compile walking routes that the students currently take. 6. Identify if these routes are safe. 7. If yes, map the routes. If no, explore a new route that is safe 8. Have students track routes with the GPS units and then transfer the track to maps 9. Create instructional information sheet with maps to share with the school. 10. Sharing the information sheets with the school and community. I will have the students fill out a end of project survey. They will also write a short essay illustrating their experience and the steps they took and their impression.
