Lesson Review Written by Charles Jeffrey Danoff

Following the opening Aisatsu, the teacher did a quick review to see if the
students retained “Stand Up, Sit Down.” They did.

Next we covered the following action verbs:

• Eat
• Drink
• Sleep
• Get up
• Run
• Walk
• Jump
• Stop

The HRT first introduced the words by showing pictures of the actions being
performed with the English words and having the students guess their
meaning in Japanese. Next, the HRT had me pronounce the words. Before
giving the answer in English I tried to see if the kids already knew the
words, and they did know a few.

After that we did TPR where the teacher said the words and then the
students performed the action. Next the HRT broke the class up into two
teams. One team was up front, the other gave them “action” words to
perform. It was an excellent idea, as it gets the kids practicing listening
and speaking. Usually when I do TPR, I just dictate words to the kids and
they follow this method is much better.

The HRT began the alphabet section by reviewing A~G which we did last week,
then introduced H~N. I said the new letter and tried also to pronounce the
phonics of the letters, but given I couldn’t recall the phonics by heart
and only said one for each letter, it didn’t work so well.

To practice the alphabet, the HRT put the students into a circle, with each
student given a random letter. They were then to say their letter and that
of another person in the group followed by a “pa-pa” clap. Next variation
had them just say their letter and the letter of the person next to them.
Basic, but good activity.

Closed the lesson out with the alphabet song. Kids improved a lot from the
week before.

Next Time
