Donald Glover
Donald McKinley Glover (born September 25, 1983) is an American actor, writer, comedian, musician and rapper. Glover was born in Edwards Air Force Base, California, and raised in Stone Mountain, Georgia (Adaso). Donald was raised by his parents, Donald Glover, Sr., a postal worker, and Beverly, who ran a daycare center (Donald). Growing up in a Jehovah Witness household he had been restricted from watching certain programs and participating in various activities, this free time allowed him to expand in his creative ways and explore other interests (Donald). He attended DeKalb Arts School and graduated from New York University with a degree in Dramatic Writing in 2006. Glover became relevant through his association with the sketch group Derrick Comedy. He is also recognized for his role as community college student Troy Barnes in the NBC comedy series Community (Childish).
Glover raps under the stage name Childish Gambino, he found this alias when using a Wu-Tang Clan name generator. His rst rap mixtape sick boi, was released on June 5, 2008. On September 17, 2009, Gambino released his second independent album Poindexter. The mixtape series I AM JUST A RAPPER and I AM JUST A RAPPER 2 were released in a very close in time span in early 2010 (Childish). His fourth mixtape Culdesac, was on schedule to be released on July 2, 2010, however, due to a few last minute adjustments the tape was delayed until the next day. On March 8, 2011 Donald released his ve track EP entitled EP. Continuing his progression in music he was signed to Glassnote Records as Childish Gambino in August 2011(Childish). In November of 2011 he released his rst Major album as a signed artists, Camp, which moved 52,000 records in the United States rst week. The album was recorded at number 11 on the Billboard 200 and has sold 160,000 as of June 2012 (Jacobs). His most recent work was Royalty, an eighteen track mixtape released July 4, 2012. Unlike most other rappers Donald Glover DJs and produces his own music under the name mcDJ. mcDJ has released two albums entitled Love Letter in an Unbreakable Bottle and Utterances of the Heart (Adaso).
Glover began as a writer for The Daily Show in 2005 as well as the NBC series 30 Rock from 2008 to 2009. In 2009 he was awarded the Writers Guild, this is Americas Award for the Best Comedy Series which was based on his work during the third season of 30 Rock (Donald). Glover has a successful acting career and is currently featured on the NBC show Community. He is also a stand-up comedian, his comedy special WEIRDO aired on Comedy Central in November 2011.
Together, both meaningful and clever aspects are intricately balanced through the music of rapper Donald Glover. He constantly manages to cover a wide range of topics, all over new, and self-produced beats. Glover reveals his life through his lyrics, his thoughts on race and identity, while at the same time reminding you that hes on his way to the top of the game right now. His comedy, writing, and acting skills prove himself to be a jack of all trades and overcome any competition. The fact that he can balance so many personalities and jobs will allow him to continue to be relevant to todays society. The most important facet of Donald Glover is that he can rely on himself to get things done. During my rst encounter with Childish Gambino I made immediate connections and his music left me wanting to learn more about him. As more people begin to discover Glover they will be amazed by his talent and become loyal fans.
