HIV AIDS Transmission of HIV Prevention of AIDS HIV Structure

is for uman because this virus infect humans is for mmunodeficiency because the virus attacks the bodys immune system so that it cannot fight other deadly diseases is for irus as this virus belongs to a group known as retroviruses

is for cquired which means a person gets HIV from another infected person is for mmune, referring to the bodys defense system which protects the body from diseases is for eficiency, making the immune system deficient is for yndrome which refers to a group illnesses taking place at the same time

When HIV infects a person, his or her immune system produces HIV antibodies to combat the pathogens The HIV antibodies produced by the human immune system are unable to overcome the infection HIV weakens the immune system by attacking a certain type of lymphocytes called T-cells which coordinate the immune system

The HIV uses its RNA and the DNA of the T-cells to replicate itself, thus destroying the T-cells The gradual destruction of the T-cells by the HIV weakens the immune system, making the infected person immunodeficient A weak immune system cannot effectively defend the body against other pathogens

The body becomes vulnerable to a variety of infections and cancers Other infections take advantage of the weakened immune system. These are called opportunistic infections The immune system becomes so weak that the body is overwhelmed by infections and/or cancers, and the person dies

Scientist find it difficult to produce a vaccine against HIV as the surface of the virus constantly changes (the antigens changes) So, the only way to prevent infection is to avoid contracting the virus in the following ways :

Abstain from free sex and drugs Avoid drugs and alcohol Avoid unprotected sexual contact Always use latex condoms for all types of sexual intercourse Talk to your partner about being tested before you start a sexual relationship

Limit multiple partners by maintaining a longterm relationship with one person Avoid exposure to blood products and bodily fluids through which HIV can be transmitted Never share needles used by others for drugs, tattoos and body piercing practices
