Internet Hoaxes, Email Scams, and Urban Legends In a world as fast-paced and easily access as the internet, there are bound to be problems. With a rise in the amount of people using the internet, an increase in the amount of online schemes was sure to follows. These schemes can generally be divided into three categories: internet hoaxes, email rumors, and urban legends. Now Ill them to you, along with giving you examples, so that you can know what they sound like and how to prevent yourself from getting taking in by one. First, you have internet hoaxes which can be defined as a deliberate attempt to trick a person into believing something that is untrue through fraudulent means. Another scheme that is frequently seen in the online world is email rumors. These are generally embellished and unverified information that are sent throughout the online world in attempts to gain attention. The last scheme category is urban legends which are also one of the most interesting ones to me. Urban legends can be seen as a more complex version of rumors. Some people think of legends as the narrative version of e. Despite legends being more complex when compared to rumors, they still share a lot of the same qualities.
