Prof. Bernard G. Sanidad July 29, 2013 THE INTERNET: FRIEND OR FOE TO CHILDREN?

1.

Does use of internet by children and teenagers pose an ethical dilemma? Why or why not? Since the question is focused on children and teenagers vulnerability to the effects of the internet on their moral values, in my opinion would not pose any ethical harm to them if the following guidelines are taken into account: Parents should monitor the use of the internet in their household by having proper tools installed such as the blacklist filter which limits access to web sites that contain sexual content, violence or hate speech. Also the use of white filter which allows only approved list of web sites to be used by the children or teenagers. Its the parents responsibility to set proper home rules for the kids to abide by when using the internet and offer parental counselling through communicating to them the importance of following these rules to avoid negative impacts it may pose to their childhood development.

2.

Should parents restrict use of the internet by children or teenagers? Why or why not? Yes, they should. Especially when it comes to games since it can become quite addictive. Time disappears when you are online and teens especially can stay up all night long because theres one more interesting post to read or they are talking to friends. It keeps you up and you dont get sleepy. Younger children cant usually do time management by them selves. It should not be a situation where the child has no clue what to do unless they have internet. You also have to see what type of person your child is. Some children only have friends online and can be bullied in school and then its important they get socialize with them.
